微盛耳。故其言生者不言成。言成者不言生。皆各有深义存焉。似不可以强分也。然欲明各年生成之义者。当以上中下
三气合而观之。以察其盛衰之象。庶得本经之义。愚按本经之所分太过不及。在天干以甲丙戊庚壬主太过。乙丁己辛癸
主不及。在地支以子午寅申辰戌主太过。卯酉巳亥丑未主不及。今复以子午卯酉之中。又分出太过不及。是与经旨相违。
而不与蛇足矣。且甲子为六十岁之首。子既属对化。主成。不当云热化二矣。次庚午为正化。主生。又不当为热化七矣。
再按卯酉之对化五年。乃九九九四九。奚以卯之对化主四年。而酉之正化止一年耶。又如己亥之风化五年。乃三八三三
八。再查寅申岁厥阴在泉之风化五年。乃三八三八三。十年合而论之。当主生数五。成数五。又奚三居六而八居四耶。
此皆不明经义。强为臆说。贻误后人。愚仍以子午卯酉之太过不及。兼以上中下之生克。五运六气之相资。参疏于上。
其间或有未尽。以待后贤参补可也。）

(Above are the Generation and Completion numbers of Si Tian and Zai Quan. Various schools consider Zi, Chou, Shen, Mao, Chen, Si as Dui Hua [Opposite Transformation], following the mark to govern completion; Wu, Wei, Yin, You, Xu, Hai as Zheng Hua [Standard Transformation], following the root to govern generation. Only Zhang Jiebin doubted this, saying there is no concept of Zheng/Dui in various chapters of Nei Jing, only in the latter part of this chapter: "Excess numbers are completion, deficiency numbers are generation." This merely intends to use generation/completion numbers to clarify the subtle prosperity or decline of Qi transformation. Thus, those speaking of generation do not speak of completion, and those speaking of completion do not speak of generation, each having deep meanings. It seems inappropriate to force a distinction. However, to understand the meaning of generation/completion for each year, one should observe the Upper, Middle, and Lower Qi together to examine their prosperity and decline, thereby obtaining the true meaning of the classic. I believe the classic's division of Excess and Deficiency governs Excess via Heavenly Stems Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren, and Deficiency via Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui; and on Earthly Branches, Excess via Zi, Wu, Yin, Shen, Chen, Xu, and Deficiency via Mao, You, Si, Hai, Chou, Wei. Now, further dividing Excess and Deficiency within Zi, Wu, Mao, You contradicts the classic's intent, akin to adding feet to a snake. Moreover, Jia Zi is the first of the sixty cycles. If Zi belongs to Dui Hua governing completion, it should not say Heat transforms to two. Next, Geng Wu is Zheng Hua governing generation, yet it says Heat transforms to seven. Again, checking the five Dui Hua years of Mao and You, they are 9,9,9,4,9. Why does Mao's Dui Hua govern four years while You's Zheng Hua stops at one? Also, regarding Ji Hai's Wind transformation five years, they are 3,8,3,3,8. Checking again Yin and Shen years' Jue Yin Zai Quan Wind transformation five years, they are 3,8,3,8,3. Combining ten years, it should govern five generation numbers and five completion numbers. Why does three occupy six and eight occupy four? These are all failures to understand the classic's meaning, forcing speculative theories, misleading future generations. I still adhere to the Excess and Deficiency of Zi, Wu, Mao, You, combined with the generation and overcoming of Upper, Middle, Lower Qi, and the mutual support of Wu Yun and Liu Qi, providing commentary above. For all these regular cycles, Winning/Recovering and Standard Transformation have constant numbers, which must not fail to be examined. Therefore, he who knows the essence concludes with one word; he who does not know the essence scatters infinitely. This is what is meant. (Regular cycles refer to Heavenly Stems starting at Jia, Earthly Branches starting at Zi. Zi and Jia combine, thirty years form one Ji [Cycle], sixty years form one Zhou [Full Cycle]. Winning/Recovering refers to years of deficiency; Standard Transformation refers to cycles of excess. All have constant, unchanging numbers. The essence refers generally to the prosperity and decline of Yin and Yang.)
The Emperor said: Excellent. Does the Qi of Wu Yun also retaliate? (This discusses how Wu Yun transformations are restricted by Si Tian and Zai Quan, accumulating until depression is extreme, then erupting to retaliate against the year's Qi. Hence it is said "break its depressed Qi, nourish its source of transformation." It means that when Year Qi restricts Yun transformation, one should use the flavor that overcomes it to break it, preventing depression and recurrence. For example, in Ding Mao and Ding You years, Shao Shang Metal Yun descends upon Yang Ming, so Metal Qi is depressed; in Wu Chen and Wu Xu years, Tai Zheng Fire Yun descends upon Tai Yang, so Fire Qi is depressed; in Ji Si and Ji Hai years, Shao Gong Earth Yun descends upon Jue Yin, so Earth Qi is depressed; in Geng Zi and Geng Wu years, Tai Shang Metal Yun descends upon Shao Yin, so Metal Qi is depressed; in Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, Shao Yu Water Yun descends upon Tai Yin, so Water Qi is depressed; in Geng Yin and Geng Shen years, Tai Shang Metal Yun faces Ministerial Fire Si Tian, so Metal Qi is depressed; also in Yi Si and Yi Hai years, Shao Shang Metal Yun faces Ministerial Fire Zai Quan, so Metal Qi is depressed; in Ren Zi and Ren Wu years, Tai Jiao Wood Yun faces Yang Ming Zai Quan, so Wood Qi is depressed; in Gui Chou and Gui Wei years, Shao Zheng Fire Yun faces Tai Yang Zai Quan, so Fire Qi is depressed; in Jia Yin and Jia Shen years, Tai Gong Earth Yun faces Jue Yin Zai Quan, so Earth Qi is depressed; in Yi Mao and Yi You years, Shao Shang Metal Yun faces Jun Fire Zai Quan, so Metal Qi is depressed; in Bing Chen and Bing Xu years, Tai Yu Water Yun faces Tai Yin Zai Quan, so Water Qi is depressed. Qi Bo said: Eruption occurs only when depression is extreme, waiting for the appropriate time. (Waiting for the appropriate time means: Earth eruption occurs in the Fourth Qi, Metal eruption in the Fifth Qi, Water eruption before and after the Second and Third Qi [Fire], Fire eruption in the Fourth Qi. The Qi of the Five Elements all sense Heaven generating and Earth completing, Earth completing and Heaven generating. This is the He Tu [River Map] number. Earth often using generation: Earth resides in the Center, sensing Heavenly Stems to begin transformation. Heaven and Earth Qi are based on Five and end at Nine. This is the Luo Shu [Luo Scroll] number. Hence it is said: Between Heaven and Earth, nothing leaves Five, and humans correspond to it.
