At the beginning of the first month of spring, the Yellow Emperor sat in leisure, observing the eight extreme directions, correcting the qi of the eight winds, and asked Leigong: Regarding the classification of Yin and Yang, the way of meridians, and what each of the five zang organs governs, which zang organ is the most noble? Leigong replied: In spring, corresponding to Heavenly Stems Jia and Yi and the color green, it primarily governs the Liver (Gan). The treatment cycle is seventy-two days; this is when the pulse governs the time. I consider this zang organ the most noble. The Emperor said: Reflecting on the *Shangxia Jing* (Classic of Upper and Lower) and *Yinyang Congrong*, what you call "most noble" is actually the lowest. Leigong fasted for seven days and attended again at dawn. The Emperor said: San Yang (Three Yang) serves as the Jing (Meridian/Channel), Er Yang (Two Yang) serves as the Wei (Maintenance/Support), and Yi Yang (One Yang) serves as the You Bu (Wandering Department); from this, one can understand the beginning and end of the five zang organs. San Yin (Three Yin) serves as the exterior, Er Yin (Two Yin) serves as the interior, and Yi Yin (One Yin) reaching its extremity resembles the New Moon (Shuo) and the Last Day (Hui); turning back to combine calculations establishes its principle. Leigong said: Having received instruction, I still do not clearly understand. The Emperor said: What is meant by San Yang is the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian serving as the Jing; when its pulse reaches the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin (Shou Taiyin Fei Jing), it is wiry (Xian), floating (Fu), but not deep (Chen); decide with measurement, observe with the heart, and align with the theory of Yin and Yang. What is meant by Er Yang is the Yangming (Bright Yang) meridian; when its pulse reaches the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin, it is wiry, deep, and urgent, without vigorous beating; if heat arrives, the disease will be fatal. Yi Yang is the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) meridian; when its pulse reaches the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin, it connects upward to the Renying acupoint (Renying, ST9), wiry and urgent, hanging like a thread without breaking; this is the disease pulse of Shaoyang, and if only Yin pulses appear, death ensues. San Yin is the master of the six meridians, intersecting with Taiyin; the pulse is hidden and beating but not floating, connecting upwards to the mind-heart (Zhi Xin). Er Yin reaches the Lungs, its qi returns to the Bladder, and externally connects to the Spleen and Stomach. When Yi Yin arrives alone, the meridians are severed, the qi floats and does not beat, and the pulse is hook-like (Gou) and slippery (Hua). These six pulses are alternately Yin and Yang, interweaving and combining, confusingly penetrating the five zang organs, aligning with Yin and Yang; the one arriving first is the host, the one arriving later is the guest. Leigong said: I have exerted my utmost sincerity, received the transmission of meridian knowledge, recited and obtained the Way of Congrong to align with the *Congrong* chapter, yet I do not know Yin and Yang, nor do I know the pairing of Yin and Yang (male and female principles). The Emperor said: San Yang is like the father, Er Yang is like the guard, Yi Yang is like the discipline. San Yin is like the mother, Er Yin is like the female, Yi Yin is like the sole messenger. When Er Yang and Yi Yang combine, Yangming governs the disease; if it cannot overcome Yi Yang, the pulse becomes agitated, and all nine orifices become sunken. When San Yang and Yi Yang combine, the Taiyang pulse prevails; Yi Yin cannot restrain it, causing internal chaos in the five zang organs and external manifestations of fright and terror. When Er Yin and Er Yang combine, the disease is in the Lungs; the Shaoyin pulse is deep, overcoming the Lungs and injuring the Spleen, affecting the limbs externally. When Er Yin and Er Yang both arrive together, the disease is in the Kidneys, manifesting as cursing and reckless behavior, and mania arising from disorders of the head. When Er Yin and Yi Yang combine, the disease originates in the Kidneys; Yin qi lodges in the Heart, the epigastric region and empty orifices are blocked like a dam, and the limbs feel separated. When Yi Yin and Yi Yang alternate and cease, this Yin qi reaches the Heart, moving up and down without constancy, entering and exiting without awareness, with dry throat and pharynx; the disease is in the Earth-Spleen. When Er Yang and San Yin combine, the Zhi Yin (Ultimate Yin) is present; Yin cannot exceed Yang, and Yang cannot stop Yin; when Yin and Yang both sever, a floating pulse indicates Blood Ma (blood mass), and a deep pulse indicates Pus Abscess. When Yin and Yang are both strong, descending to Yin-Yang, ascending to match the Brightness (Heaven), and descending to match the Darkness (Earth), one diagnoses the period of life and death, aligning with the beginning of the year. Leigong said: Please ask about the short-term prognosis. The Emperor did not answer. Leigong asked again. The Emperor said: It is in the *Jing Lun*. Leigong said: Please tell me the short term. The Emperor said: For diseases in the three months of winter, if the disease combines with Yang, when the pulse shows signs of death in the first month of spring, death will occur after leaving spring. For diseases in the three months of winter, if the pattern has exhausted itself, when grass and willow leaves die, if Yin and Yang are both severed in spring, the time of death is in the first month of spring. For diseases in the three months of spring, if Yang is killed, and Yin and Yang are both severed, the time of death is when grass dries. For diseases in the three months of summer, if Zhi Yin does not exceed ten days, and Yin and Yang intersect, the time of death is when water dries up. For diseases in the three months of autumn, if San Yang all arise, the disease may heal without treatment. If Yin and Yang intersect, the patient stands unable to sit, and sits unable to stand. If San Yang arrives alone, the time of death is when stone water freezes. If Er Yin arrives alone, the time of death is when waters are abundant.
