General Treatise on Water and Dampness
Various dampnesses originate from the fact that dampness is the qi transformation of Earth; fire-heat can generate Earth-dampness. Therefore, when summer is hot, all things are moist; when autumn is cool, damp objects become dry.
Dampness diseases do not arise spontaneously but are caused by intense heat leading to qi stagnation, where body fluids cannot circulate freely, thus stagnating and generating water-dampness.
Those suffering from dampness diseases mostly develop it from heat, and heat qi often exists as a concurrent syndrome, termed "damp-heat," which follows the same logic as "wind-heat." Even in cases of cold-water pathology, if circulation is obstructed, it can transform into dampness. Although such variations exist, they are rare. Alternatively, one may present with edema of the dorsum pedis, cold body, and fluid retention; this occurs because accumulated heat has penetrated deeply into the interior, and it was originally not a cold disease.
Sanhua Shen Wan (Three Flowers Divine Pill): Treats abdominal fullness and distension, wheezing and coughing, stranguria, and all swellings and fullness caused by water-dampness; sedimentation of damp-heat intestinal filth transforming into diseases. For chronic illnesses that do not resolve, presenting with sallow emaciation, fatigue, qi-blood stagnation, and lack of free circulation. Or due to wind-heat dryness and stagnation, causing limb numbness, wandering pain, wind-phlegm salivary cough, dizziness, and vertigo. Intractable malaria, mass accumulations (Zheng Jia), hardness, fullness, and stifling sensation; wine accumulation and food stagnation; all phlegm-fluid retentions and vomiting/nausea. Also for women's menstrual irregularities, dribbling leukorrhea, whether red or white. And for men and women with shanghan (cold damage) damp-heat, abdominal fullness and solid pain, new or old thinness and weakness. Laypeople often fail to distinguish these, treating them merely as ordinary qi-moving medicines. It also treats new or old lower back pain, all types of dysentery, and pediatric jing-gan (malnutrition with accumulation) heat and breast distension; all are suitable for taking this pill.
Ingredients: Kansui Radix (Gansui), Kansui Root (Daji), Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua) [soaked in vinegar until moist, stir-fried, each 0.5 liang]; Salviae Miltiorrhizae Seed? No, *Liqian Niu* refers to *Arctii Fructus*? No, *Qian Niu Zi* is *Pharbitidis Semen* (Morning Glory Seed) (2 liang); Rhubarb (Dahuang) (1 liang, ground into fine powder); Calomel (Qingfen) (1 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with drops of water to form pills the size of small beans. Start with 5 pills, increasing by 5 pills per dose, taken with warm water, three times daily. Increase until there is rapid and profuse bowel movement. Afterward, continue regular administration until the disease is eliminated.
If the illness has resolved, elderly, weak, deficient individuals, and normal people may take it regularly for maintenance, to promote qi-blood circulation and aid digestion of wine and food. If the condition involves extreme stifling and oppression from masses, taking more medicine may cause violent purgation that fails to clear the obstruction,反而 worsening pain and distress. In such cases, start with 2 pills, increasing by 2 pills per dose, until rapid bowel movement is achieved, adjusting according to judgment.
For children, make pills the size of sesame seeds, adjusting dosage based on strength. Children aged 3-4 years should take 3-5 pills, following the aforementioned method.
