Following the previous chapter "Taiyin Yangming Lun" (Treatise on Taiyin and Yangming), this section further explains the pathologies of the Yangming pulse. The Yangming channel belongs to Earth, thus it dislikes Wood; Yangming heat is excessive, thus it dislikes Fire; Yangming Qi rebellion causes aversion to people; when the four limbs are solid, one can climb high; when heat is abundant, one discards clothing; when there is no desire to eat, one runs wildly. These are all diseases of the Yangming channels, differing in life-and-death, deficiency, and excess, hence they are explained.
The Yellow Emperor asked: When the Foot-Yangming channel is diseased, why does one dislike people and fire, and why does hearing the sound of wood cause sudden fright?
The sound of bells and drums does not move him, but why does he startle at the sound of wood? I wish to hear the reason.
"Dislike" (E) is pronounced with the departing tone, as below. The *Ling Shu · Jing Mai* (Spiritual Pivot · Channels) states: "When the Foot-Yangming Stomach channel is diseased, one dislikes people and fire, and hears the sound of wood with sudden fright." The Yellow Emperor cites this to ask.
Qibo replied: The Yangming is the Stomach channel. The Stomach belongs to Earth. Therefore, hearing the sound of wood causes fright because Earth dislikes the control of Wood.
Hearing the sound of wood causes fright because the Yangming Stomach channel belongs to Earth, reflecting the meaning of Earth being controlled by Wood.
The Yellow Emperor said: Good. Why does he dislike fire? Qibo said: Yangming governs the flesh, and its channel has abundant blood and Qi. When pathogens invade, heat arises; when heat is excessive, one dislikes fire.
The reason for disliking fire is that Yangming governs the flesh, and its channel's blood and Qi are abundant. When pathogens invade, heat becomes excessive, leading to a dislike of fire.
The Yellow Emperor said: Why does he dislike people? Qibo said: When Yangming Qi rebels, there is panting and inner distress/fright; due to this inner distress, one dislikes people.
"Rebellion" (Jue) refers to Qi reversal. "Distress/Fright" (Wan) refers to startled looking around. Yangming dislikes people because the collateral vessels of the Stomach cannot ascend and reach the exterior, causing Qi rebellion. Rebellion leads to rapid panting and startled looking, which results in disliking people.
The Yellow Emperor said: Some die from panting, while some survive. Why?
The condition of panting and distress has both fatal and survivable outcomes, so he asks again.
Qibo said: If the rebellion connects to the Zang organs, death ensues; if it connects only to the Jing channels, survival occurs.
The Stomach collaterals connect upward to the Pericardium and pass laterally through the axilla. Now, if Stomach Qi rebels and the disease involves the Shaoyin Heart organ, death occurs; if it involves only the Pericardium channel, survival occurs.
The Yellow Emperor said: Good. In severe cases, one discards clothes and runs, climbs high and sings, or goes several days without eating, climbing over walls and onto roofs. Places climbed are beyond their usual capabilities, yet the disease enables them to do so. What is the reason?
Severe Yangming disease leads to mania, so these symptoms are cited for inquiry.
Qibo said: The four limbs are the root of all Yang channels. When Yang is abundant, the four limbs become solid; when solid, one can climb high.
The Hand-Taiyang channels flow from hands to head, and the Foot-Taiyang channels flow from head to feet; thus, the four limbs are the root of all Yang channels. Now, with excess and abundance of Yang Qi, it fills the four limbs making them solid; when solid, one can climb high.
The Yellow Emperor said: Why discard clothes and run? Qibo said: Because heat is abundant in the body, one discards clothes and runs.
The reason for discarding clothes and running is that Yangming Fire-Heat is abundant throughout the body, leading to discarding clothes and running.
The Yellow Emperor said: Why speak wildly, curse, and sing without regard for intimacy or distance?
"Cursing" (Li) is pronounced Li, as below. Climbing high and discarding clothes is external mania; speaking wildly, cursing, and singing without regard for relationships is internal mania, hence the question.
Qibo said: Abundant Yang Qi causes one to speak wildly, curse, and disregard intimacy.
Yang Qi is Fire Qi, governed by the Heart. When Yang Qi is hyperactive, the Heart's governance of blood vessels becomes disharmonious, causing wild speech, cursing, and singing without regard for relationships.
And there is no desire to eat; because there is no desire to eat, one runs wildly.
Regarding the previous question about going days without eating and climbing walls/roofs, it is stated that because there is no desire to eat, precisely due to this lack of desire, one climbs walls and runs wildly. The combination of no desire to eat and wild running illustrates that the four limbs receive Qi from the Stomach, emphasizing that the Stomach regards food and drink as its foundation.
