Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Huayuan (likely a variant or specific preparation, contextually treated as an herb) each 1 qian, Xieshao (Scorpion tail tip) 2 fen, Xixin (Asarum Root) 1 fen, Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (soaked in wine overnight, soaked in hot water seven times, dried by baking) 1 fen. Grind all together into powder, take with warm boiled water, or dissolve and take with mint tea.
Baiqianniu (White Morning Glory Seed), Heichou (Black Morning Glory Seed) (each half raw, half processed, taking the head part) 5 fen. Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Zhike (Aurantium Fruit) each 1 qian. Grind all together into powder, take with cold rice water. For those with excessive phlegm-saliva, add a small amount of honey. If infants suffer from smallpox/rash with convulsions, only use Daochi San (Gardenia Decoction) to mix Chen Sha (Cinnabar Powder) for one dose; do not recklessly use Liangjing Wan (Cooling Convulsion Pill), Baolong Wan (Embracing Dragon Pill), Baoming Wan (Life-Preserving Pill) and other medicines.
Xijiangyue (Song Lyric):
Infantile convulsion syndromes must distinguish between acute and chronic origins. Acute cases stem from excess heat, seeking treatment through purging; chronic cases stem from deficiency-cold, requiring warming and tonification. Acute is due to wind-cold and food stagnation; chronic is lingering from prolonged illness. Such accurate differentiation reveals divine skill and masterful technique.
Acute infantile convulsion presents with sudden high fever; thus, extreme heat generates wind. Phlegm-saliva obstructs the throat, body stiffens like a drawn bow, mouth and eyes deviate, symptoms are heavy. First use Tianjing Miaosan (Sneeze-Inducing Miraculous Powder) to induce sneezing, then use Daochi San (Gardenia Decoction) to clear heat and unblock. Combine moxibustion/acupuncture on Shaoshang (LU11) and Zhongchong (PC9), and select Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill) or Liangjing Wan (Cooling Convulsion Pill).
If encountering wind-cold external contraction, sweating is appropriate first. Use Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill) as a decoction, adding Xie (Scorpion) and Can (Bombyx Batryticatus). If it is indeed internal injury from diet, resolving and purging should follow. Sanhuang Wuse (Three Yellows Five Colors) can be applied freely; once stagnation is removed and heat eliminated, convulsions stop.
Chronic convulsion initially stems from prolonged illness. Spirit gradually diminishes, spleen becomes deficient. Listless, heavy, fatigued, sighing deeply, mouth open unable to suckle milk. Weak convulsions occur intermittently, limbs are cold and inverted. Use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) with Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) urgently to dispel [cold]. If ineffective, apply moxibustion to the left breast area.
To recognize fatal signs of infantile convulsion: face red like rouge, mouth open with saliva flowing, teeth tightly clenched. Eyes fixed straight, breath coarse, voice hoarse. Sound in throat like sawing wood, sweat at hair follicles like pearls falling, eyes staring wide or pupils small—do not boast about these. Loud crying, restlessness, and confusion are particularly feared.
Convulsions start and stop suddenly, phlegm-qi has no end or rest. Drowsy snoring sleep, difficult to awaken, unaware of sucking or swallowing milk. Urine and stool incontinence with little sensation, limbs stiff and hard to retract, no crying sound, sweat like oil—even with spiritual elixirs, rescue is difficult.
Infantile convulsion with cough, everyone mistakes it for wind-wheeze. Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Baiqianniu (White Morning Glory Seed), Heiqianniu (Black Morning Glory Seed), Renshen (Ginseng Root) used in equal proportions. All four ingredients ground into powder, mixed with honey water to desired consistency, instill one "yi" character amount down the throat, avoiding blind acupuncture and random moxibustion.
Two fingers extending and contracting is named "Chu" (twitching); ten fingers opening and closing weakly is the form of weakness. "Che" (jerking) causes the whole body to jump up; trembling makes four limbs shake like a bell. Body arching backward is "Fan" (opisthotonos); hands like drawing a bow form "Gong" (bow-like posture). Angry eyes looking up is "Cuan" (darting); eyes exposed and unresponsive is the true sign.
