Treating Wind-Strike of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) Channel, with a pulse that is floating at the cun position and weak at the chi position, indicating Weak Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Strong Wei (Defensive Qi), accompanied by headache, nasal congestion/rhonchi, dry retching, fever, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to wind; or irritability and heat that resolve upon sweating, resembling malaria in pattern, with a pulse that is floating, large, forceless, and expansive.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, peeled), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (each 1 liang 5 qian); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, roasted) (1 liang); Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (6 pieces, split).
Crush the herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.8 sheng remains, strain, and take warm before meals. Cover with blankets to induce a slight general sweating for recovery. If sweating leads to leakage that does not stop, aversion to wind, difficulty urinating, and stiffness/tension in the four limbs, add Shu Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) 1 fen; if there is stiffness in the nape and back with sweating and aversion to wind, add Gegen (Radix Puerariae) 1 liang 3 qian; if body pain persists after sweating with a deep and slow pulse, add Shaoyao and Shengjiang each 0.5 liang, and Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 1.5 liang; if following purgation there is a rapid pulse and chest fullness, remove Shaoyao; if there is mild chills, add Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis); if following purgation there is stiffness in the head and neck, feverish sensation like steam rising, absence of sweating, fullness and mild pain in the epigastrium, and dysuria, remove Guizhi and add Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) each 1.5 liang. If the exterior syndrome of Taiyang remains unresolved but multiple purgations have been used, resulting in heat accumulation, incessant diarrhea, epigastric stuffiness/hardness, and simultaneous exterior-interior pathology, add Renshen 1 liang; if mild wheezing occurs after purgation, add Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) 6 qian 3 zhu, and Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 17 grains; if forced sweating via burning needle therapy causes cold invasion at the needle site, leading to nodular redness and subsequent Ben Tun (Running Piglet) disease, moxa each nodule once (one zhu), and add Guizhi 1 liang to the prescription; if burning needle therapy causes restlessness, remove Shaoyao, reduce Guizhi by 1 liang, and add Muli (Concha Ostreae) and Longgu (Os Draconis et Mastodi) each 1 liang, which can substitute for Niujie Tang (Decoction for Reversing Crisis).
Wind-Strike of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel presents with dry mouth, irritability and thirst, spontaneous sweating, lethargy, heaviness of the body, and difficulty urinating. This is because the channel runs alongside the nose, connects to the eyes, descends through the diaphragm, belongs to the Stomach, connects to the Spleen, runs alongside the umbilicus, and enters the Qiguan (Qi Street). Thus, the Yangming syndromes manifest as described. Treatment should utilize Xingzi Tang (Apricot Seed Decoction).
Treating Wind-Strike of the Yangming Channel, characterized by ability to eat, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, abdominal fullness with mild wheezing, fever with aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, lethargy, body heaviness, difficulty urinating, tidal fever, and hiccups, with a pulse that is floating, wiry, long, and rapid—all are indicated for this formula.
Xingzi Tang: Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, peeled and tip removed), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, washed in boiling water to remove slipperiness), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) (each 2.5 qian); Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Xixin (Herba Asari), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati, processed), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Preparata, steamed), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, roasted) (each 3 qian); Fuling (Poria) (4 qian).
Crush the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.7 sheng remains, strain, and take warm before meals.
Wind-Strike of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel presents with body heat, aversion to wind with spontaneous sweating, stiffness of the nape, and fullness of the hypochondrium. This is because the channel originates from the outer canthus, ascends to reach the vertex/corner of the head, crosses out, enters the Supraclavicular Fossa (Quepen), descends into the chest, pierces the diaphragm, connects to the Liver, follows the interior of the hypochondrium, emerges at the Qiguan, and joins at the hip joint. Thus, the Shaoyang syndromes manifest as described. Treatment should utilize Chaihu Jia Guizhi Tang (Bupleurum plus Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
