Huashi San (Talcum Powder)
Treats conditions where the bladder (Paom, urinary bladder) is forced by heat pathogens, or when urination is forcibly retained, causing water qi to press upon the bladder. This results in the bladder being contracted and unable to expand fully. External urine cannot enter, and internal urine cannot exit. Symptoms include urgent pain in the lower abdomen, inability to urinate, and abdominal distension. If untreated, it can be fatal.
Hanshuishi (Calcitriol/Halite mineral, two liang), Baishihui (White Talcum, one liang), Kuizi (Abelmoschi Semen, one he), Luangfa Hui (Ash of tangled hair), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, peeled and nodes removed, each one liang).
The above herbs are crushed into a powder. Boil with ten dou of water until five sheng of liquid remain. Take one sheng at intervals; urination will become unobstructed.
Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill)
Treats deficiency constitution with cold in the lower origin (Xiaoyuan, lower burner/kidney area), leading to Paozhuan (bladder torsion/dysfunction) and inability to urinate. The abdomen becomes distended with urgent pain. After four or five days, the condition becomes critical and life-threatening. Take fifty pills per dose, administered with salt water decoction. (For the formula details, see the Deficiency category.)
Congbai Tang (Scallion White Decoction)
Treats sudden and complete obstruction of urination, with distension and urgency in the lower abdomen. Qi rushes upward to the heart, causing suffocation and near-death sensation. This is caused by violent qi attacking the bladder, or due to fright and worry, leading to qi stagnation and closure without flow. The rushing qi causes the bladder ligaments (Paoxi) to become misaligned.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, three liang), Kuizi (Abelmoschi Semen, one liang), Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulb, two stems).
The above herbs are crushed into a powder. Boil with five sheng of water until two sheng of liquid remain. Divide into three doses.
Xi Fang (Washing Formula)
Treats Paozhuan resulting in inability to pass urine. First use:
Liangjiang (Galangali Rhizome), Congtou (Scallion Head), Zisu Jingye (Perillae Caulis et Folium) (each one handful).
Boil these in water. In a sealed room, fumigate and wash the lower abdomen, external genitalia, and anus. Retain the decoction for reuse. Dip cotton wool in the liquid to wash, massage the area below the umbilicus with hands, and dry off. Cover with a cotton quilt.
Shukui Zi (Malvae Semen, two qian half), Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Red Bark), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Bai Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each half liang).
Crush the above herbs into a powder. Take three qian per dose. Decoct to obtain clear juice, reheat, and while hot, mix with three pills of Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pills) and half a qian of finely ground Qingyan (Halitum/Green Salt). Take warm before meals.
Another method:
Half a jin of stir-fried salt, placed in a cloth bag, applied as a hot compress to the lower abdomen.
Congyi Fa (Scallion Hot Compress Method)
Treats difficult urination and abdominal distension. If not treated promptly, it can be fatal. Use three jin of Scallion White (Congbai), finely chopped and stir-fried until cooked. Wrap in a cloth pad. Divide into two portions and alternately apply hot compresses to the area below the umbilicus until urination becomes unobstructed.
