The Heart is the meridian of Hand-Shaoyin, located in the South, belonging to Bing-Ding Fire, and serves as the monarch of the physical form. It externally corresponds to the tongue, governs the whole body, directs the blood vessels of all zang-fu organs, irrigates the muscle spaces (xigu), internally moistens the five zang organs, and externally defends the couli (pores). It stands in exterior-interior relationship with the meridian of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine (Note: Text says Small Intestine, but standard theory links Heart with Small Intestine; translating literally as per text instruction to keep original terms where possible, though "Small Intestine" is typically Hand-Taiyang. The text says "Hand Yangming Small Intestine", which is a textual error in the source or specific context, I will translate as written: Hand-Yangming Small Intestine meridian). If injured by sorrow and overthinking, it may cause sudden pain, frequent spitting of clear saliva, distension and oppression in the heart and diaphragm, forgetfulness, frequent fright, flying dreams, dispersion of spirit and mind, and a floating and deficient pulse; this indicates a deficiency-cold pattern. As for excess patterns, excess generates heat; heat causes mental restlessness, red face, fever, sores on the mouth and tongue, dry throat and headache, excessive laughter or fear and palpitations, hot palms, sweating, epistaxis, and a surging and excess pulse; this indicates an excess-heat pattern. A floating, large, and scattered pulse indicates a healthy state without disease. Conversely, a floating, choppy, and short pulse, or one that is curved at the front and supported at the back, resembling holding a belt hook, all indicate death of the Heart. The treatment principle is to clear heat if it is heat, and warm cold if it is cold, while also examining the root cause.
This formula treats deficiency-cold of Heart Blood caused by excessive sorrow and overthinking, characterized by palpitations, fear, unhappiness, stiff tongue and difficulty speaking, trance-like state, forgetfulness, resentment, sallow complexion, profuse sweating, and loss of appetite.
