梗状,甚者咽肿喉痹,谓之心咳;怒伤于肝者,两胁下痛,甚则两 下满,谓之肝咳;

"Sou" (cough with phlegm) is what the ancients called "Ke" (cough). The skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lung; when the skin and hair first receive pathogenic factors, these pathogens enter via this correspondence. Furthermore, the Classics state: "All five zang and six fu organs can cause cough, not only the Lung." From this perspective, the skin and hair initially receive pathogenic factors, which then transmit internally via their correspondence, subsequently transforming into coughs of the five zang and six fu organs. Externally, this is caused by injury from the Six Evils (Liu Yin); internally, it is triggered by the Seven Emotions (Qi Qing). Lingering for years, causing damage to the five zang organs, thus forming chronic consumption coughs is very common. Moreover, those injured by Wind experience aversion to cold, body heat, spontaneous sweating, aversion to wind, and cough; those injured by Cold experience aversion to cold, body heat, absence of sweat, aversion to cold, and cough; those injured by Summerheat experience irritability, thirst with desire to drink, and cough; those injured by Dampness experience painful joints, heavy limbs, and cough. Excessive joy injures the Heart, causing a sensation of obstruction in the throat like a lump, or severe sore throat and bi-syndrome, termed Heart Cough; anger injures the Liver, causing pain under both hypochondria, or fullness under both hypochondria when severe, termed Liver Cough; excessive thought injures the Spleen, causing pain under the right hypochondrium radiating to the shoulder and back, inability to move when severe, and aggravated cough upon movement, termed Spleen Cough; fear injures the Kidney, causing pulling pain between the waist and back, or coughing up saliva when severe, termed Kidney Cough; sorrow injures the Lung, causing wheezing with sound, or hemoptysis when severe, termed Lung Cough. If zang coughs do not heal, they transmit to the fu organs. If Heart cough persists, the Small Intestine is affected, leading to cough accompanied by loss of qi (incontinence of gas/urine); if Liver cough persists, the Gallbladder is affected, leading to cough with vomiting of bile; if Spleen cough persists, the Stomach is affected, leading to cough and vomiting, with expulsion of roundworms if vomiting is severe; if Lung cough persists, the Large Intestine is affected, leading to cough with fecal incontinence; if Kidney cough persists, the Bladder is affected, leading to cough with urinary incontinence; if chronic cough persists, the Sanjiao is affected, leading to cough with abdominal fullness and anorexia. These conditions all gather in the Stomach and relate to the Lung, causing excessive phlegm and drool, facial edema, and rebellious qi. Furthermore, excessive sexual activity, irregular diet, extreme fatigue and shouting, and mental overwork injuring the Heart, all cause cough. Regarding the pulse of cough: floating and large pulses indicate survival, while deep, small, or hidden pulses indicate death. The treatment method should deduce the origin and regulate accordingly, achieving invariably effective results. Nowadays, people treating cough often prefer using Poppy Shell (Yingsu Qiao) and Chinese Plum (Wumei), unaware that Poppy Shell has a tight and astringent nature, and Chinese Plum is sour, both being agents that injure the Spleen and Stomach. For those with strong Spleen and Stomach, taking them may be acceptable, but for those with slightly weak Spleen and Stomach...
