[Imperial Medical Bureau Formulas] *Dushu Houzhi* (Postscript to Books Read), 13 volumes. Lost.
Zhao Xibian stated: During the Yuanfeng era of Emperor Shenzong, an edict was issued ordering skilled physicians throughout the realm to submit their effective secret formulas. These were sent to the Imperial Medical Bureau for verification, prepared according to the prescriptions, and sold. Copies were also cast in woodblocks and circulated to the world.
[Zhang Lei's Formulas for Treating Wind] *Shulu Jieti* (Bibliographic Solution to Book Records), 1 volume. Lost.
Chen Zhen Sun stated: This was transmitted by Zhang Lei (courtesy name Wenqian). It contains thirty formulas in total.
*The History of the Eastern Capital* records: Zhang Lei, courtesy name Wenqian, was from Huaiyin, Chuzhou. He was exceptionally intelligent from childhood and skilled in writing. He studied under Su Zhe. Su Zhe admired his writings and recommended him to pass the imperial examinations. He served as Chief Clerk of Linhuai, Assistant Magistrate of Shou'an, and Magistrate of Xianping. Su Shi also deeply appreciated him, praising his literary talent, and summoned him to the Imperial Academy. In the early years of Emperor Zhezong, he held the post of Corrector of Writings, was promoted to Attendant Gentleman of the Palace Library, and changed to Compiler of Histories, concurrently serving as Reviewer in the History Institute. He served in the academy for eight years, maintaining integrity and indifference to fame and wealth, and was subsequently elevated to Recorder of Events. He requested a provincial appointment and served as Prefect of Runzhou with the title Directly Under the Hanlin Academy. He was transferred to Xuanchow, then demoted to Supervisor of the Huangzhou Wine Tax due to censure, and later moved to Fuzhou. He was reinstated as Vice Prefect of Huangzhou, then transferred to be Prefect of Gunzhou. He was recalled to serve as Vice Minister of Ceremonies. After only a few months, he was again appointed Prefect of Yingzhou with the title Directly Under the Hanlin Academy, and subsequently transferred to Ruzhou. Later, he was dismissed from office due to his association with the Yuanyou Faction, and placed in charge of Mingdao Palace. Initially, while Zhang Lei was alive, upon hearing of Su Shi's death, he conducted funeral rites for him in the manner of a master and disciple. A censor reported this, leading to his demotion to Adjutant of Fangzhou and placement in Huangzhou. Five years later, he regained his freedom and resided in Chenzhou. Soon after, he was placed in charge of Chongfu Palace. He died at the age of sixty.
[Chu Yushi's Ancient and Modern Verified Formulas for Health Preservation Essential for Use] Recorded in Song Bibliographies as 3 volumes (*Dushu Houzhi* states 16 volumes). Lost.
Zhao Xibian stated: *Essential Formulas for Health Preservation*, 16 volumes, was compiled by Chu Yushi of our dynasty. The preface states that there are many ancient medical classics circulating in the world. The reason for compiling a new book is that ancient dosages differ significantly from contemporary weights, making them difficult for users to apply. This formula provides detailed symptom descriptions and easy-to-use methods. If one treats according to the text, even those untrained in medicine can cure diseases without seeking a physician. Chu Yushi was originally a scholar of our dynasty but suddenly shaved his head and became a monk. While in Xiangyang, he associated closely with Shifu.
Chen Zhen Sun stated: *Book of Health Preservation*, 3 volumes, was compiled by Chu Yushi (courtesy name Hefu) of Lingquan Mountain, with a preface dated Dingchou of the Shaosheng era.
Zhu Yu stated: It is said in the world that when women give birth, they may produce a "ghost shape." If it cannot be caught and killed, it will fly away and return at night to nurse, often causing the mother to become extremely emaciated. This is commonly called "Hanba" (Drought Demon), which is divided into male and female. The female demon steals household items to take out, while the male demon steals external items to bring back. Chu Yushi (courtesy name Hefu) was a renowned scholar and skilled physician. Nobles and high officials competed to invite him, but his nature was unruly and difficult to approach; he often slighted the powerful. Whenever nobles sought his medical help, he would demand heavy bribes, making it unbearable. However, the bribes he received were immediately distributed to the poor. He greatly admired Huang Tingjian, often saying that Huang was filial to his parents, and he respected him greatly. Whenever he obtained fine ink, paper, or rare curios, he would always give them to Huang Tingjian. Huang Tingjian told court officials, "Chu Hefu is to me exactly like a 'Drought Demon'." At that time, someone in the room who disliked Hefu suddenly replied, "When he comes to my house, he is the 'Female Drought Demon'." (From *Ketang*)
Lu You stated: Chu Yushi, courtesy name Hefu, was famous for his medical skills throughout the world. During the Yuansheng era of Emperor Zhezong, Prince Deng was born. Over a month later, he suffered from severe epilepsy and was critically ill. The assembled physicians were at a loss, but Chu Yushi alone believed there was nothing to worry about. Yet, within three days, the Prince passed away. Indeed, medicine is difficult. (From *Laoxue'an Biji*)
Zhou Mi stated: Chu Yushi's compiled *Essential Formulas for Health Preservation* warned people against taking Jinhu Bixia Dan indiscriminately. He detailed the reasoning: Wang Junmin (courtesy name Kanghou), a Zhuangyuan (top scorer in the metropolitan examination) and examiner for Yingtian Fu, contracted a manic disorder. In the examination hall, he shouted incessantly at a stone stele, as if the stele were responding to him, or as if Kanghou were enraged himself. His condition became so severe that he lost consciousness. He took a pair of crossed knives from a book and cut himself over an inch deep. Those around him held him back, saving his life, and he was removed from the exam hall. Shortly after, his illness subsided, and his daily routine and diet returned to normal, though he remained melancholic. Physician Xu believed he was ill and used Bixia Jinhu Dan to induce vomiting. Others suggested clearing heat from the Heart Visus and advised taking various cold-natured herbs for the Heart channel. Over time, this led to severe nocturnal diarrhea, depletion of Qi, emaciation, inability to eat, and death. (From *Qidong Yeyu*)
[Continued Essential Formulas] *Yiwen Lue*, 1 volume. Lost.
[Pang Anshi's Verified Formula Book] Recorded in Song Bibliographies, 1 volume. Lost.
[Pang Family Secret Treasure Formulas] *Shulu Jieti*, 5 volumes. Lost.
Chen Zhen Sun stated: Compiled by Pang Anshi (courtesy name Anchang) of Qishui. Pang Anshi was famous for his medical skills in the world. The only book of his that has been transmitted to the world is the *Treatise on Cold Damage*. This book was transcribed by Wu Yan (courtesy name Huifu) of Nancheng and given to me.
[Master-Student Dialogue Collection] 1 volume. Lost.
*History of Song - Biography of Pang Anshi* states: [Pang Anshi] studied the properties of plants and their suitability for the five Zang organs, assigned their functions, managed their cold and hot natures, and arranged their odd and even characteristics to treat hundreds of diseases. He wrote *Master-Student Dialogue Collection*, 1 volume.
[Yang Kanghou's Life-Protecting Formulas] *Dushu Zhi*, 5 volumes. Lost.
[Tongshen Lun] *Dushu Zhi*, 14 volumes. Lost.
Zhao Xibian stated: *Yang Family Life-Protecting Formulas*, 5 volumes, and *Tongshen Lun*, 14 volumes, were compiled by Yang Tuixiu of our dynasty. Yang Tuixiu applied the theories of Qibo regarding the Five Movements and Six Qi to treat diseases. Among later generations, only Wang Bing mastered these concepts. However, even Wang Bing did not fully understand the sequence and origin of climatic changes and stellar movements. Therefore, he wrote this treatise on formulas.
Huang Tingjian's preface states: Learning in the world requires a master to reach subtlety and wonder. Although one may not fully comprehend the intent of the former kings, having a source keeps one close to the classics. The principles of the Six Classics are profound, yet with the works of Mencius, Xunzi, Confucians of the Two Han Dynasties, and modern scholars like Liu Chang and Wang Anshi, reading them allows one to grasp more than half. Literary scholars are rare, but we have Zuo Qiuming, Zhuang Zhou, Dong Zhongshu, Sima Qian, Sima Xiangru, Liu Xiang, Yang Xiong, Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, and modern figures like Ouyang Xiu, Zeng Gong, Su Shi, and Qin Guan. Their works are preserved, with clear rules, ready for study. However, the books of Shennong, Yellow Emperor, Qibo, Leigong, and the theories of Bian Que, Chunyu Yi, Huangfu Mi, and Zhang Ji are rarely studied by Confucians, and even when studied, one fails to reach their source. Recently, Gao Ruone of Liyang was known for his expertise in medical formulas, but after his death, his transmission ceased. I have a friend outside the secular world named Yang Jie, who once told me about the meanings of *Bencao* and *Suwen*, saying, "The Five Movements and Six Qi dictate medicinal choices based on the year; even Zhang Zhongjing found this problematic." Regarding *Bencao*, Zhang Zhongjing was profound. I have experienced much worldly trouble and have not had the chance to learn from Yang Jie. Now old, exiled to the frontier, and invaded by miasma and pestilence, my life is nearly spent. I regret not learning from Master Yang earlier. This year, due to affairs, I went to Qingshen. There was a man named Yang Kanghou (courtesy name Zijian), who kindly presented me with his medical writings. I read them all; his theories are vast and profound. Shu is remote, so I could not ask about what I did not know. Zijian studied behind closed doors, mastering the untaught teachings of the Yellow Emperor and Qibo, achieving such depth. Is this not rare? However, his decoctions were adjusted by intuition, so they inevitably had flaws. Formulas are created by sages who understand the nature of all things, and clever ones merely transmit them. Now, Zijian expounds on the Five Movements and Six Qi, describes diseases, selects medicines, and shares acupuncture and moxibustion methods with the public. This is the intention of a benevolent person. (From *Yuzhang Biejí*)
Note: Zhao Xibian attributes this book to Yang Tuixiu. According to Huang Tingjian's preface, Yang's name was Kanghou, courtesy name Zijian, who also authored *Ten Childbirths Treatise*. Thus, Tuixiu is likely another courtesy name or pseudonym of Kanghou.
[Yan Xiaozhong's Expanded Reliable and Effective Formulas for Preserving Life] Recorded in Song Bibliographies, 1 volume. Lost.
Liu Qi stated: *Baosheng Xinxiao Fang* was compiled by Yan Xiaozhong. Xiaozhong, courtesy name Ziqin, was from Xuchang.
[Dong Ji's General Methods for Treating Hongjiao (Gout/Charcot Joint)] (*Shulu Jieti* lists author as Dong Ji). Recorded in Song Bibliographies, 1 volume. Not seen.
Ye Shaoyun stated: During the Chongning and Daguan eras, in the capital, I saw Dong Ji and Liu Yan, who were proficient in Zhang Zhongjing's methods. Their trials were effective, unlike the vulgar practitioners from Jianghuai. (From *Bishu Luhua*)
*Synopsis of the Four Treasuries* states: *General Methods for Treating Hongjiao*, 2 volumes, was written by Dong Ji of the Song Dynasty. Dong Ji, courtesy name Jizhi, was from Dongping. His life details are unknown. Qian Yi wrote a preface for his *Treatise on Smallpox and Measles*, indicating his works were produced between the Yuanyou and Yuanfeng eras of Emperor Zhezong/Shenzong. *Shulu Jieti* lists this work as 1 volume, consistent with *Song Shi - Yiwen Zhi*. No copy existed for a long time. It has now been compiled from *Yongle Dadian*. Due to its length, it is divided into 2 volumes. Volume 1 contains 12 treatises, mainly stating that Hongjiao is caused by wind-dampness, which combines cold and heat, originating from Kidney deficiency. Yin/Yang and Deficiency/Excess distinguish the disease; Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter dictate different treatments; High/Dry vs. Low/Wet distinguish geography; Old/Young/Male/Female distinguish the patient. The theory is comprehensive. Volume 2 contains 46 formulas: Duhuo San, Muxiang San, Chuanxin Fang Fengcha, Sangzhi Jian treat Wind; Tianma Wan, Huixiang Wan, Wushe Wan,chentong Wan treat Dampness; Yiyiren Tang, Haitongpi San, Mugua Wan treat Wind-Damp combination; Duhuo Jisheng Tang, Shinan Wan, Niuxi Wan treat Wind-Damp with Deficiency; Jinya Jiu treats Wind-Damp Miasma; Bawei Wan, Shenli Tang, Dihuang Zhou treat Deficiency; Shengong Wan, Maren San, Sanwan San, Dahuang Tang treat Excess; For Yin types with Cold, Muxiang Yinzi treats the Yin bias; For Yang types with Heat, Hongxue treats the Yang bias; Jianggong Wan, Baipixiaodou San, Mutong San treat Yin-Yang types with strangury and retention; Songjie San, Shiqian Wan, Shi Hou Wan, Jupi Wan treat standard methods; Saren Wan, Runchang Wan, Wuro Wan treat blood dryness in the elderly; Tiandongda Jian is the general treatment method; Linxie Zhengwu Wu Fang are external treatments. Acupuncture and moxibustion methods come first. The original preface mentions 19 categories, roughly covering these. Even with omissions, few are missing. Hongjiao corresponds to "Jue Disease" in *Suwen*, a term appearing in the Tang Dynasty, with increasingly detailed treatments. However, works by Li Xuan, Su Jing, Xu Wang, and Tang Shizhong are mostly lost. Only Dong Ji's volume remains, being quite rigorous and orthodox. He stated he suffered severely from this disease, pondered its source, and discovered secrets. This is the proverbial "three broken limbs make a good physician." We record it here for specialized reference.
[Traveler's Essential Formulas] Recorded in Song Bibliographies, 1 volume. Lost.
Liu Qi stated: *Lvshe Beiji Fang* and *Chuangzhen Lun* were both written by the recluse Dong Ji. Dong Ji, courtesy name Jizhi, was from Dongping.
*Synopsis of the Four Treasuries* states: *Lvshe Beiyao Fang*, 1 volume, was written by Dong Ji of the Song Dynasty. Chen Zhen Sun's *Shulu Jieti* records Dong Ji's *Pediatric Smallpox and Measles Treatise* and *Hongjiao Treatment Methods*, but omits this book. However, *Song Shi - Yiwen Zhi* records it with the same volume count. Chen likely missed it. Dong Ji, suffering sudden illness during travel where medicine was hard to obtain, collected over a hundred effective formulas. Examples include remedies for centipedes entering the ear and herbal poisoning, which are critical yet use simple drugs. Various trauma formulas are rarely seen in ancient books and seldom transmitted today. They are unique, resembling ancient secret formulas that work miraculously but whose mechanisms even He Huan and Bian Que could not explain. Xiao Banxia Tang and Wuling San originate from Zhang Ji of the Han Dynasty. Here, Banxia Tang is used for damp-phlegm, following its original method. Wuling San, originally for unresolved cold damage after sweating or fluid retention, is now used as a general diuretic, showing flexible application. Similarly, Hejian's Yiyuan San, originally for half-exterior/half-interior cold damage, was later used for summerheat. His formula for summerheat seems to be the prototype for Li Quan's Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang. Wubi Xiangru San differs slightly from later Bureau Formulas, likely modified from ancient formulas. However, it claims to treat calf cramps and pain but removes Mugua, the primary herb for this, which is inexplicable. The pediatric section largely overlaps with Qian Yi's *Yaozheng Zhijue* of the same period. However, using harsh drugs like Nifen and Zhusha for delicate infant stomachs and intestines was acceptable for ancients with strong constitutions but should not be universally applied later. The original was lost long ago. Nearly fifty formulas were recovered and organized from *Yongle Dadian* into twelve categories based on old titles. Conditions like chest pain from cold and convulsive phlegm潮 have titles but no text, so they remain blank.
[Tan Yongde's Extraordinary Sage Formulas] Lost.
Liu Qi stated: Compiled by Tan Yongde of Hongnong. Yongde was from Xiapi, Peiguo. (From *Youyou Xinshu*)
[Chen Shiwen's Correction of the Taiping Huimin Heji Ju Fang] Recorded in Song History, 5 volumes. Lost.
Chen Shiwen et al. submitted a memorial: In ancient times, Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs to save the people. The Zhou Dynasty established the Office of Physicians to manage illnesses, recorded in bamboo slips as a model for eternity. Our Great Song rose, inheriting sagely virtue, nurturing all life with benevolence. Recognizing that epidemics occur in all seasons, no remedy is more urgent than medical formulas. Since the Kaibao era, we ordered ministers to collate the *Bencao*. Later, we compiled *Shenyi Pujiu*, published *Taiping Shenghui*, revised acupuncture points, and corrected *Qianjin* and *Waitai*. We also created *Qingli Shanjiu* and *Jianyao Jizhong* formulas to benefit the world, casting bronze, carving stone, or printing blocks. This matches the intent of Shennong and the governance of Cheng Zhou. Heaven bestowed the Divine Ancestor (Emperor Shenzong), whose wise succession showed benevolence not just in theory but in action, establishing the Imperial Medical Bureau and Medicine Shop in the capital to care for the people's ailments. The current Emperor (Emperor Zhezong/Huishong context implies continuation of benevolence) expanded this, adding seven bureaus in the Chongning era named "Heji Huimin," ensuring proper preparation and sale. Purchasing medicinal materials eliminated fraud. Edicts ordered local bureaus to extend ancestral grace. However, since inception, formulas taken from merchants or contributors were unverified, containing errors. Printed editions circulated doubts. Dosages were wrong, preparations ignored classics, and some were fake. Posters contained many errors. Recently, we reported this to the court and were ordered to select experts to correct them. We consulted secret archives and private records, collecting all versions. We verified origins, corrected errors, supplemented losses, and deleted duplicates. Within a year, the book was completed and copied. We respectfully present it to the court, hoping harmonizers achieve perfect effects and drinkers have no doubts. This publication extends the benevolent intentions of Xifeng and the grand plans of Chongguan, benefiting all under heaven with health and harmony for eternity. Is this not praiseworthy? Jiangshi Lang Chen Cheng, managing the bureau and reviewing formulas. Fengyi Lang Pei Zongyuan, Acting Director of the Imperial Medical Bureau, managing the bureau and reviewing formulas. Chaofeng Lang Chen Shiwen, Acting Director of the Department of the Treasury, supervising the bureau. Respectfully submitted.
Zhao Xibian stated: *Heji Ju Fang*, 10 volumes. In the Daguan era, an edict ordered experts to correct the bureau's formulas. The work took a year, correcting 708 characters and adding/modifying over 70 formulas.
Chen Zhen Sun stated: *Taiping Huimin Heji Ju Fang*, 6 volumes, corrected by Chen Shiwen (Director of the Department of the Treasury) et al. It contains 21 categories and 297 formulas, with later additions.
Wang Yinglin stated: In the Daguan era, Chen Shiwen et al. corrected *Heji Ju Fang*, 5 volumes, 297 formulas, 21 categories. On Jan 4, Shaoxing Year 6, four bureaus were set up, one being Heji Ju. On Aug 23, Leap Month, Shaoxing Year 18, the Shuyao Suo was changed to Taiping Huimin Ju. On Dec 17, Shaoxing Year 21, printed formulas were distributed to circuits.
*History of Song - Annals of Gaozong* states: On Feb Yi Mao, Shaoxing Year 21, an edict ordered all provinces to establish Huimin Bureaus and provide official medical books.
Zhou Mi stated: *Heji Ju Fang* carefully collected famous formulas, reviewed by multiple physicians and high officials/eunuchs,可谓... However, errors exist. Take Niuhuang Qingxin Wan: 39 ingredients, mixed cold/hot natures, confusing. A doctor noted the first eight ingredients up to Puhuang belong to this formula. The subsequent 21 ingredients from Ginseng Radix are actually from the Tonify Deficiency category's Shanyu Wan, mistakenly appended. I corrected this based on his advice, and it was true. Such errors are common. Misrecording in *Bencao* is serious. (From *Guixin Zashi*)
Liu Gui stated: Someone asked: Danxi analyzed *Heji Ju Fang* in detail. Dai Yuanli, Danxi's top student, follows the Bureau Formulas in his *Zhengzhi Yaojue Fanglun*. Why? I say: What harm did the Bureau Formulas do? They saved countless lives. Danxi criticized misuse, not the formulas themselves. Blood deficiency should avoid aromatic/dry herbs; flaccidity should not be treated as wind. Did we abandon them? People now think they are unusable, or prefer North/South distinctions. But *Neijing* says treat cold with heat, heat with cold, mild cases oppose, severe cases follow. Adaptation is key. Can we limit by North/South without considering cold/heat differences? Yuanli understood Danxi's essence; his use of Bureau Formulas was deliberate. (From *Xu Yishuo*)
Note: Based on Song Bibliographies and Wang Yinglin, the old version was 5 volumes. *Shulu Jieti* lists 6 volumes, possibly separating the table of contents. *Dushu Zhi* lists 10 volumes, likely a typo. Xu Chunfu listed Pei and Chen together as founders, without basis. Di Jian states: Wang Yinglin claimed Heji and Huimin bureaus were established in Shaoxing. But Chen Shiwen's memorial mentions "Chongning added seven bureaus named Heji Huimin," implying creation in Chongning, not Shaoxing. *Song Shi - Official Records* states: Chongning era set up 7 bureaus. Xuanhe Year 3 reduced them to 2. Shaoxing re-established Heji Ju, changing Shuyao Suo to Huimin Ju. Zhang Haipeng's *Xuejin Taoyuan* supplement preface to *Ju Fang* says: Chongning era started Heji name; Shaoxing changed Shuyao to Huimin. This is not entirely accurate. Chen's memorial also states: Since Chongning, formulas from merchants/contributors were unverified, containing errors. Although printed,
