The "Old Book of Tang: Biography of Yuwen Shiji" states: Yuwen Shiji was from Chang'an, Yongzhou, son of Yuwen Shu, Grand General of the Right Guard in the Sui Dynasty, and younger brother of Yuwen Huaji. In the late Kaihuang era, he was enfeoffed as Duke of Xincheng County due to his father's merits. Emperor Wen of Sui once invited him into his bedroom, conversed with him, found him extraordinary, and arranged for him to marry Princess Nanyang, daughter of Emperor Yang. He followed Emperor Taizong in pacifying Song Jingang and was re-enfeoffed as Duke of Xincheng County for his merit; Princess Shouguang was given to him as a wife, and he was promoted to Cavalry General of the Prince of Qin's Mansion. He later participated in pacifying Wang Shichong and Dou Jiande, advancing his title to Duke of Ying State, and was promoted to Vice Director of the Secretariat. After Emperor Taizong ascended the throne, he replaced Feng Lun as Director of the Secretariat. Soon after, he served as Acting Governor-General of Liangzhou in his original capacity. He died in the 7th year of Zhenguan and was posthumously awarded the title of Grand General of the Left Guard and Governor-General of Liangzhou, buried alongside Emperor Taizong at Zhaoling Mausoleum.

Preface by Zhou: I have heard that among all things, humans are the most spiritual, and life is the most precious. Everyone knows the importance of life but does not know the methods to nurture it. When diseases attack before one's natural lifespan ends, one sighs. If there were no good physicians writing treatises, seeking doctors in emergencies would lead to many errors. Among medical specialties, obstetrics is the most urgent; the lives of mother and child hang in the balance. Diligently studying medical texts and constantly thinking of treatment, whenever I read the works of famous physicians, I keep them in mind. Moreover, when man and woman unite, yin and yang energies divide. Women, being weaker, suffer from many ailments due to their soft constitution. They carry fetuses in the blood reservoir. During pregnancy, regulation follows constant principles. Regarding diet and activity, there are many taboos to restrain emotions. After childbirth, few remain safe because organs and viscera are damaged, bones and sinews are injured, and slight negligence in care leads to disease. Worse still, encountering ignorant doctors who prescribe drugs arbitrarily causes suffering to accumulate and danger to increase day by day, leading rapidly to death. Is this not painful? Thus, the I Ching says: "The great virtue of heaven and earth is generation." Knowing that generation is the foundation between heaven and earth, how can childbirth endanger human life? Reflecting on my own negligent care and erroneous medication causing maternal mortality, I note that women who give birth two or three times have strong qi and blood, eat well, and if they regulate their nature, they stay healthy. Minor issues are easy to treat. However, after four, five, seven, or eight births, damage is deep, qi and blood are weak, the uterus is deficient, turbid stagnation is internal, and wind pathogens attack externally. Illnesses arise and require careful treatment. If doctors are not meticulous, causing critical conditions, it is doctor-induced homicide, which is obvious. In scholarly families, women nurse infants after childbirth. Childbirth severely depletes qi, and nursing deeply injures blood, harming life and spirit more than anything else. Slight deviation from reason requires immediate medical attention. Due to poverty, families cannot bribe doctors well; doctors may be negligent, leading to rapid deterioration. Alas! Childbirth is no small matter. Doctors seeking profit and treating patients with contempt leading to death is also doctor-induced homicide, clearly evident. Before and after childbirth, qi and blood are unsettled; if one disease arises, many follow. This is why ancients wrote formulas and discussions on childbirth. For example, Carp and Donkey-hide Gelatin treat fetal movement; Ligusticum and Angelica treat fetal pain. Fetal movement and pain have various causes: some due to maternal illness, others due to fetal instability. Pain is similar. I briefly outline the main points, acknowledging the physician's role. Later, Rehmannia nourishes blood, Ginger assists qi, Peony stops pain, and Astragalus tonifies deficiency. Used correctly, effects are miraculous; used incorrectly, it is better not to treat. Thus, physicians must not act casually. With compassion for suffering, I often think of writing formulas to aid crises. Lacking broad knowledge, I dare not claim confidence, so I collected obstetric techniques to spread widely. Seeing Zan Yin's "Chanbao," which delves deeply into medicine, during the Dazhong era, Chancellor Bai Minzhong lamented that many women suffered difficult labor. He consulted famous doctors to save lives. Someone recommended Zan Yin. The chancellor summoned him, asked about childbirth, and Zan Yin compiled three volumes of formulas presented to the chancellor. The chancellor valued its conciseness and named it "Chanbao." Though this text exists, few possess it. Aiming to cure diseases, I regret not having a copy at home, so I venture to write this preface, hoping to enlighten the public. It contains 52 chapters and 371 formulas, supplementing Zan's omissions, with three short essays appended to the end. May pregnant families find it useful as a home master. Preface written in the 8th month of autumn in the Ding Si year.
Zhao Xibian said: "Chanbao" in 2 volumes, compiled by Zan Yin of Former Shu. Contains 278 prepared remedies for childbirth and lactation.
Ma Duanlin said: "Chanbao" in 2 volumes. Chao Shi stated: Compiled by Tang dynasty's Zan Yin, a native of Shu. In early Dazhong, Bai Minzhong governed Chengdu. His family had a death due to difficult labor. Seeking famous doctors, Zan Yin was recommended. Bai Minzhong invited him. Zan Yin presented 378 prepared remedies. Later, Zhou added three essays to the front.
Chen Ziming said: "Chanbao Fang" was compiled by Zan Ying, an official under the Jiedushi of Later Liang.
Note: Di Jian said: In early Dazhong, Bai Minzhong governed Chengdu, and Zan Dianzhi presented this book. Checking the "Book of Tang," Bai Minzhong became Jiedushi of Jiannan Xichuan in the 6th year of Dazhong, governed for 5 years, then transferred to Jingnan. Zhao's "Reading Record" claims Zan Yin of Former Shu compiled it, likely an error due to his Shu origin. "Yiwen Lü" records Xia's "Chanbao" in 3 volumes, stating it was compiled by Zhou of Former Shu. This confuses additions into two books. However, based on this, he was a remnant of the late Tang. The Ding Si mentioned in the preface corresponds to the 4th year of Jianning. This confirms Zan Yin was Tang dynasty. Chen Ziming's basis is unknown.
This book has been lost for a long time. Tang Shenwei, Chen Ziming, and others cited it extensively but missed much. Only what is scattered in "Yifang Leiju" is detailed enough to compile. Comparing with other sources, perhaps nine-tenths can be recovered. Song records say 3 volumes, consistent with Zhou's preface mentioning 52 chapters and 378 formulas. "Dushu Zhi" says 2 volumes and 278 formulas. However, "Yifang Leiju" contains over 320 formulas, matching the chapter count, suggesting the "two" in later records is a typo for "three." Friend Chuanqiao Jingzhong (Heng) copied from "Yifang Leiju," organizing closed menstruation, leukorrhea, and pregnancy into Volume 1, confinement and difficult labor into Volume 2, and postpartum syndromes into Volume 3. Of Zhou's short essays, only one cited by Chen Ziming is identifiable; others are hard to verify.
[Jiyan Fang by Yang Shi (Guinong)] (Song annotation: Gui may be Shi) Recorded in "New Book of Tang: Bibliography" as 3 volumes, now lost.
Ancient Tang annotation: Yang Guinong was demoted from Remonstrator-in-Chief to Sima of Fengzhou during the Yuanhe era, eventually becoming Governor of Zhuozhou. Contains 911 formulas.

[Chan Shu by Wang Shi (Yue)] Recorded in "Yiwen Lü" as 1 volume Extant.
Note: This book was long lost, preserved almost completely in Korea's "Yifang Leiju." Di Jian transcribed it as one volume, uncovering light after centuries of obscurity.
Postscript to "Chan Jing" by Zheng Ruming: Song Jushi of Hengyang said: Old copies of Wang Yue's "Chan Jing" had a postscript by Chen Tongliang, Provincial Transport Commissioner of Hunan. Checking "Zhiqi Ji," the text is not recorded. It is also missing from "Yifang Leiju."
[Shichan Lun by Yang Shi (Kanghou)] Extant.
Yang Kanghou said: One must know these syndromes before childbirth to avoid innocent loss of mother and child life. Midwives are rarely skilled, often causing death. Out of grief, I state them fully.
[Furen ChanYu Baoqing Ji by Guo Shi (Jizhong)] Recorded in Song Dynasty records as 1 volume, now lost.
Zheng Ruming said: Recently obtained a donated version from Chen Youzhi of Xiangtan containing 21 essays, compiled by Guo Jizhong during Daguan era. Author unknown. Printed and donated in Xinhai year of Shaoxing. Proven effective repeatedly, bringing back the dead and saving the living.
Preface by Li Shisheng: I collected 21 essays on childbirth, precise and comprehensive. Likely by Imperial Medical Doctor, extracting wonders from medical texts. Regrettably, theory without formulas. Guo Jizhong, a contemporary fine physician, excels in obstetrics. His pulse diagnosis and medication yield miraculous results. He wished to attach his family formulas to these essays, creating a complete work. Truly a book gathering diverse benefits. Ancients said sons not learning medicine are unfilial; those having formulas but not sharing them, can they be called benevolent?
[Buyi ChanYu Baoqing Ji by Du Shi] Recorded in "Shulu Tiejie" as 1 volume, now lost.
Chen Zhen Sun said: Li Shisheng of Puyang obtained 21 essays on childbirth, having theory but no formulas. Medical Professor Guo Jizhong attached formulas to the essays, making it complete. Recently, Chen Yan of Kuocang evaluated its merits and flaws in "San Yin Fang." Du, a physician from Wuzhou, further supplemented it, making it quite detailed.
[Jiaochan Rulu Beiyao by Zhao Shi (Ying)] Now lost.
Preface by Zhao Ying: Childbirth, though common, is dangerous. Improper care or medication causes harm. This is why predecessors emphasized formulas. My friend obtained "Rulu Beiji," printed by Professor Fu of Xujang at Liyang Academy. Using my old collection, I corrected it, added Yang Zijian's Seven Sayings and childbirth essays, compiling them together for printing, hoping for some benefit.
[Jiaofu ChanYu Baoqing Ji by Ji Shi (Zhijun)] 2 volumes Extant.
Preface by Ji Zhijun: Visiting Physician Li Ning, he showed me a book, "ChanYu Baoqing Ji." Reading it, I saw it was compiled by Song scholars Li Shisheng, Guo Jizhong, Yang Zijian, etc. The childbirth section mentions gestation periods varying from 7-10 months to 1-5 years. Human birth depends on yin and yang timing, unchangeable. Limiting to 10 months seems incomplete. Sighing at its rarity, I wish to spread it so no one suffers premature death. Obstetric texts are numerous, but complete childbirth books are rare. Losing one means losing it forever. Asking whose book it was, Li said it was secretly kept by Yang Shibiao. I visited him, explained my intent, and received the original printed copy. Planning to print, Li suggested adding Imperial Pharmacy miscellaneous formulas, "Monthly Birth Chart," Ti Yuanzi's Land Borrowing Method, and directions for hiding clothes for safe delivery, combining them into a complete set. I agreed, fearing errors, ordered famous physicians to review. The book is complete. Advisor Zhou Defu supported printing. From now on, may pregnancies be safe, midwives accurate, families self-sufficient in medicine, and knowledge spread widely. Preface by Ji Zhijun.
Siku Quanshu Summary: "ChanYu Baoqing Fang" 2 volumes, author unknown. "Song Shi: Yiwen Zhi" attributes it to Guo Jizhong. Checking Chen Zhen Sun's "Shulu Tiejie," Guo only added new formulas to Li Shisheng's old text, not the original author. "Song Shi" likely hadn't seen Chen's account. Guo's additions combined with original theory make one volume, differing from this edition. Examining prefaces, Chen Yan of Kuocang wrote "San Yin Fang," evaluating these formulas. Du from Wuzhou added Chen's comments. Later, Zhao Ying obtained "Chanru Beiyao," added Yang Zijian's Seven Sayings, combining with childbirth essays. Ji Zhijun added Imperial Pharmacy formulas, charts, and methods. This cumulative process altered Guo's original form, keeping only the name. Rarely transmitted, excerpts in "Yongle Dadian" include 21 essays, 16 evaluations by Chen Yan, 34 formulas (Vol 1); "Chanru Beiyao" and pregnancy signs with 62 formulas (Vol 2). Ti Yuanzi's method is missing. Fetal education was valued by ancients (Jia Yi, Liu Xiang). Specific obstetric drugs lacked dedicated books until Zan Yin's "Chanbao" in Tang bibliography. Thus, this is the oldest extant text on gestation. Only Chen Yan's comments are signed; others are anonymous. Based on structure, Vol 1 formulas are Guo's; Vol 2, except for expulsion/lactation/energy sections, are likely Yang's. Attached formulas are likely from Ji's Imperial Pharmacy collection. Chen Yan wrote "San Yin Fang." Yang Zijian (Kanghou) wrote "Yangshi Jiacang Fang" (not seen). Li Shisheng et al. were Southern Song people. Ji's preface calls them Song scholars and mentions recent events in Yan-Zhao, suggesting Yuan dynasty compilation.
Li Diaoyuan Preface: Original title "ChanYu Baoqing Jifang," commonly miswritten as "Bao Geng Ji" due to missing "Fang." Retaining old usage here.
Note: This book is no longer Guo's original but includes later additions. Tracing origins, listing items. Zhao Ying's edition resembles "Chanru Beiyao." Preby Ayuzhai Laoren mentions "ChanYu Dingqing Shu" to promote its spread, indicating "Chanru Beiyao" was attached. Zhao, courtesy name Dexiu, is related to Duke Song.
Yang Zijian, name Kanghou, pseudonym Tuixiu, lived around Yuanfu era. Wrote "Huming Fang" and "Tongshen Lun," already recorded. Yang, courtesy name Zijing, lived around Chunxi era. The author of "Jiacang Fang" is mistakenly identified as the same person by the Summary.
[Tai Chan Zhen Jing by Juan Shi (Ruming)] 2 volumes Extant.
Xiong Zongli said: Guo Jizhong's 21 Postpartum Essays combined with Tang scholar Shi Xian's 18 Prenatal Essays constitute "Tai Chan Zhen Jing."
Note: "Shi Chan Jing" in "Linglan Erji" is this book. Shi's original had 18 questions. Zheng Ruming added "Bowu Renyun Jin Suogan Shuo," Sun Simiao, Yang, Cui, etc., Guo's 21 essays, and "Shichan Lun," binding them into 2 volumes. Completed in the first year of Jiading.
[Weisheng Chanke Fang by Shen Shi (Yuqing)] Recorded in Song Dynasty records as 1 volume, now lost.
[Chanru Shiba Lun by Shen Shi (Bing)] Song annotation: Volume lost. Now lost.
[Weisheng Jiabao Chanke Fang by Zhu Shi (Duanzhang)] Recorded in Song Dynasty records as 8 volumes Not seen.
Qian Zeng said: "Chanke Beiyao" 8 volumes. Zhu Duanzhang of Changle compiled collected obstetric experience formulas into 8 volumes. Printed and proofread at Nankang Academy in Jiachen year of Chunxi. Paper and ink exquisite. Begins with Land Borrowing, Grass Ban, Water Ban methods. Ancients were cautious about women entering the first month postpartum. Rarely practiced or known.
[Chanke Jing Zhen Huanzhong Tu by Anonymous] Recorded in Song Dynasty records as 1 volume, now lost.
[Tai Chan Jingyan Fang by Lu Shi (Zizheng)] Recorded in "Shulu Tiejie" as 1 volume, now lost.
[Chanbao Zhufang by Anonymous] Recorded in "Shulu Tiejie" as 1 volume Not seen.
Chen Zhen Sun said: Author unnamed. Collects various formulas, topped with Twelve-Month Birth Chart.
Siku Quanshu Summary: "Chanbao Zhufang" 1 volume, author unknown. Not in "Song Shi: Yiwen Zhi," only in Chen Zhen Sun's "Shulu Tiejie." Rarely listed in Ming/Qing bibliographies. Checked "Yongle Dadian," found over 70 formulas and a "Twelve-Month Birth Chart," matching Chen's record. Likely the original Song text. Includes a fragmentary preface and Wang Qingyue's preface. Formulas for preserving birth are comprehensive, but original arrangement disrupted by "Yongle Dadian." Carefully reorganized by category: regulating menstruation/nourishing blood, calming fetus, fetal diseases, inducing labor, postpartum, miscellaneous diseases, remaining one volume. Many cited formulas were adopted later. E.g., Ginseng Drink shares intent with Zhu Zhenheng's Dasheng San (using Abdominal Peel as chief, Ginseng as assistant), showing Zhu derived from it. Zhang Yuansu's Shutai Wan uses Magnolia Bark and Atractylodes...
