Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) [all medium dose], Bulbus Ophiopogonis (Maidong) [higher dose], Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin) [higher dose], Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhi Gancao) [added later], Cortex Cinnamomi (Rougui), Cortex Epimedii? No, Cistanche Deserticola (Roucongrou) [medium dose], Radix Ginseng (Renshen) [higher dose]
Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Banxia), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shudihuang), Sclerotium Poriae (Fuling) [all medium dose], Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang) [three slices], Fructus Jujubae (Dazao) [two pieces]
Take the above herbs, add two zhong of water, decoct until one zhong remains, remove the dregs, and take warm.
Hu notes: The above prescription is formed by adding Maidong, Roucongrou, Fuzi, and Banxia to Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction). It has a strong ability to warm the Stomach, tonify the Spleen and benefit the Lung, fill the Kidney, and warm the Liver; hence it is named as a Jianzhong (Establish the Middle) type formula. ○ Furthermore, Tiaozhong Tang can also warm the Stomach, but its formula contains Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae (Cangzhu), Herba Ephedrae (Mahuang), Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Qianghuo), and Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi), which are herbs for treating Wind-Dryness in the Taiyang and Yangming channels. This does not accord with medical principles, and using it may cause harm.
Haizang treated the case of Hou Fuzhi. The pulse was extremely deep and fine, with internal cold and external heat. Several spots of macules appeared on the shoulders, back, chest, and hypochondrium. Speech was delirious and chaotic. Someone said, "Macules appearing with delirious speech—is this not a Heat syndrome?" I replied, "No. Yang Qi is forced inward by Yin Cold, moves upward into the Lung, and transmits to the skin and hair, thus causing macules. The Spirit fails to reside within, leading to disordered speech resembling madness, rather than true delirium. Although the muscle surface feels hot, upon manual pressure for a moment, it feels cold through to the bone like ice." Administered herbs such as Rhizoma Zingiberis (Jiang) and Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi) over several days, totaling more than twenty liang. The patient recovered after profuse sweating. Later, the condition recurred; the pulse became deep and slow again, with no bowel movement for three or four days. I administered Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). Within three days, approximately half a jin was consumed, and the disease was completely cured.
Wu Renzhai once treated a patient with Shanghan (Cold Damage). After seven or eight days, due to excessive intake of cooling medicines, the body temperature dropped, extremities became cold (Jue), and black macules appeared all over the body, except for warmth at the heart region, indicating Fu Huo (latent fire/heat). Examination of the six pulses revealed them to be deep and fine. The patient was comatose, unaware of surroundings, and unable to speak, resembling Shijue (corpse-like fainting). Therefore, Renshen Sanbai Tang (Ginseng Three Whites Decoction) was used, supplemented with half a piece of Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Shu Fuzi) and two qian of Rhizoma Zingiberis (Ganjiang), decocted in water and administered. After about one shi (two hours), the color of the macules gradually turned red, extremities warmed, and the patient regained consciousness. Subsequently, residual heat remained unclarified, resulting from the manifestation of latent fire. The condition was resolved by regulating with Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) and Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction).
