Chaoza (Rumbling sensation in the stomach) is caused by phlegm stirred up by fire; treatment should prioritize resolving phlegm, using Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) stir-fried with ginger juice, incorporated into phlegm-resolving formulas. Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi, 山栀子) and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), both stir-fried, serve as the sovereign drugs; Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum (Nanxing, 南星), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) act as assistant drugs; if heat signs are pronounced, Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 青黛) is added.
Chaoza results from food stagnation generating internal heat; stir-fried Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi, 山栀子) and Ginger-processed Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) are indispensable. For obese individuals presenting with Chaoza, Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) is used with small additions of Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Fuxiong, 抚芎), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), and stir-fried Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi, 山栀子). If Chaoza arises from damp-phlegm and qi stagnation, accompanied by anorexia, Sanbu Wan (Three-Supplement Pill) is administered with added Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍zhu), doubling the dosage of Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi, 香附子). Medical Note: Jiang’s son’s case states that for a rumbling sensation in the heart seeking food, pills made of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) are taken with warm water, 70–80 pills per dose, stopping after several doses. Another record states that dizziness accompanied by Chaoza is due to fire stirring phlegm; Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) is modified with Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子), Scutellariae Radix (Qin, 芩), and Coptidis Rhizoma (Lian, 连).
Dai Yuanli stated: This is what common people call "Heart Chao" (Xincao, 心嘈).
Sanbu Wan (Three-Supplement Pill) See the chapter on Tonifying Deficiency.
Shangshi (Food Injury) presents with aversion to food and a sensation of obstruction in the chest; treatment should guide out phlegm and tonify the spleen, using Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with added Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha, 山楂), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), and Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术). Sorrow and depression injure the spleen, leading to loss of appetite; processed Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Wine-processed Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), and Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) are combined with Qingliu Wan (Six-Clearing Pill) powder, formed into pills with steamed wheat cake soaked in ginger juice.
