It is also effective for treating hernia with swelling and pain of the external testicles.

Causes of urinary retention include blood deficiency, phlegm obstruction, wind closure, and excess heat.
For qi stagnation/closure, administer Ginseng [text missing], Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), etc., first, then induce vomiting; or induce vomiting within a decoction containing Ginseng. For blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), or induce vomiting within a decoction containing Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
For excessive phlegm, use Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction), administer first, then induce vomiting. If phlegm and qi are blocked, add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis). Another method suggests using Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) to induce vomiting. All the above use induced vomiting to lift the qi; when qi rises, water descends naturally, as qi carries water. For excess heat, purgation/diuresis is indicated. Mix 2-3 fen of Qiuniu (Pharbitidis Semen) powder with sugar water, or use Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). For heat, dampness, and qi knotting in the lower jiao, clear heat, dry dampness, and raise qi are appropriate. Pregnant women often suffer from urinary retention because the bladder is compressed downward by the fetus. Regarding the discussion on "Zhuanbao" (reversed bladder), use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), decocted in water, taken on an empty stomach.
A woman suffered from urinary and fecal retention after spleen pain. This was due to phlegm blocking the middle jiao and qi stagnating in the lower jiao. Use Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction) added with Mutong (Akebiae Caulis). After taking it, decoct the dregs again and drink them, while inducing vomiting.
"Mai Jue Ju Yao" states: Yellow color on the nose tip indicates difficult urination. A pulse that is floating, wiry, and choppy indicates urinary difficulty.
