To treat scrofula (tuberculosis of cervical lymph nodes) after it has ulcerated and discharged pus, use this prescription to tonify.
Sargassum Herba (Haizao), Halitostri Gypsum (Shijueming), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Agrostidis Spica (Qumaisui) (equal parts).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with rice soup for oral administration.
The throat is the vital hub of the entire body, connecting with the stomach, serving as the passage for respiration. If heat toxins accumulate in the chest and diaphragm, causing wind disorders, stagnation occurs without dispersal, leading to throat diseases upon manifestation. Ulcers may form inside the throat, or the tissue may resemble rotting flesh, resulting in swelling, pain, obstruction, difficulty in vomiting and swallowing, and in severe cases, the formation of double tongue (chong she, a condition where an extra fleshy growth appears under the tongue). Treatment should primarily focus on dispelling wind-phlegm to unblock the pharynx and diaphragm, followed by resolving heat toxins; delay may lead to untreatable conditions. Additionally, heat toxins rushing upward can cause ulcers, known as hanging abscess (xuan yong, redness and swelling of the uvula), while coldness in the fu organs can also cause difficulty in swallowing and speaking at the throat gate. When facing illness, one must carefully examine the symptoms and apply appropriate treatment methods.
This treats acute closure due to wind-heat attacking the throat upwards, swelling and pain of the cheeks and jaw, bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy (shuang e), unilateral tonsillar hypertrophy (dan e), throat knot (jie hou), double tongue, and wooden tongue (mu she, stiffness and numbness of the tongue). All these conditions are treated, and relief is achieved through purgation.
Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, raw), Lophatheri Herba (Dan Zhuye), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Dihuang), Junci Medulla (Dengcao) (equal parts).
Crush the above herbs into coarse fragments. Decoct with water and take warm each time.
For gargling to provide urgent relief, mixing Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus (Zaojiao) powder and soot from hundred herbs (Baicaoshuang) with clear oil for water-based application, or swallowing them directly, is also effective.
Treats swelling, closure, and pain of the throat. Gargle to remove phlegm; hold in the mouth and swallow for immediate cure.
Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix (Shandougen, resolves toxicity), Reineckea Carnea Radix (Lingxiao Gen, generates flesh), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Lophatheri Herba (Dan Zhuye), Artemisia Argyi Folium (Ai Ye), Junci Medulla (Dengcao).
Crush the above herbs into coarse fragments. For those who drink alcohol, decoct with wine; for non-drinkers, decoct with water is also acceptable. Pregnant women must not take this. If various ulcers occur in the throat, taking this medicine for five or six doses after recovery can eradicate the root cause.
Treats ulcers, swelling, and pain in the throat, peripatetic wind closure (chan hou feng bi), unilateral/bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy, throat knot, acute throat wind, foreign body sensation entering the throat, double tongue, wooden tongue, and other syndromes.
Chalcanthite (Danfan, stir-fried until duck-bill shaped), Borneolum Syntheticum (Naozi, 1 zi amount), Bixue (Green Snow), Bombyx Batryticatus (Bai Jiangcan, stir-fried to remove silk), Cucumis Melo Semen (Kudingxiang/Tianguadi, do not use too much), Junci Medulla (Dengcao, stir-fried with rice paste).
If the disease does not recede, add Realgar (Xionghuang), Ziziphus Spinosa Fructus (Zhuya Zaojiao, peeled and roasted yellow), Nitrum (Yanxiao), Veratrum Nigrum Rhizoma (Lilu).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Use a small amount to insufflate into the throat. Unformed abscesses will disperse quickly; formed abscesses will rupture and heal immediately. In severe cases, insufflate into the nose. If there is excessive phlegm, urgent resolution is needed: crush fresh Artemisia Capillaris Thallus (Sheng Aiwei) with rice vinegar, extract the juice, gargle to remove phlegm, and cure immediately.
Another prescription: Use pig gallbladder from the twelfth lunar month. Grind Alum (Mingfan) into powder, place it inside the gallbladder, dry it in the wind, then take the alum, grind it into powder, and insufflate into the throat for immediate effect. For annual recurrences, moxibustion can be used to prevent recurrence.
Another prescription: For trismus (lockjaw), take Gold-horn Grass (Jinchacao) from Jiulongchuan. Single branches are best. Use only the root, not the skin. Crush it, wrap it in cotton, bind it to the tendon head, rub it against the teeth opening five or six times, and the jaw will open. Apply to the throat five or six times to expel saliva and phlegm. Afterwards, roast salt over fire, grind into powder, and use cotton with salt to moisten the area for cure. If symptoms recur after eating, crush fresh ginger, roast Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus (Zaojiao), mix with roasted salt powder, wrap ginger and salt in cotton, along with Zaojiao powder, and rub five or six times to cure.
Treats peripatetic throat closure and emergency syndrome. Crush rice vinegar and fresh ginger together and administer; throat ulcers will rupture.
Desmodii Styracifolii Herba (Guchui Cao), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Tu Niuxi).
Adding Linderae Cortex (Wuyao) is excellent.
Crush the above two herbs raw to extract juice, administer with vinegar. In severe cases, instill into the nose; expelling phlegm leads to cure. If dried, grind into powder and decoct with rice vinegar.
