Radix Paeoniae Alba (San liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Liang Er), Fructus Jujubae (Shi er mei), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (San liang), Poria (Liang Er), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (San liang).
Remove Cinnamon Twig from the Guizhi Tang formula, add Poria and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, each three liang. Prepare and administer the remaining ingredients according to the previous method. The illness will be cured when urination becomes smooth.
For abdominal fullness following sweating, Houpo Shengjiang Banxia Gancao Renshen Tang is indicated.
When the Stomach is not biased towards dryness and the Spleen is not biased towards dampness, with the Spleen ascending and Stomach descending, the Middle Qi circulates smoothly, and the chest and abdomen are harmonious, thus no fullness occurs. Sweating depletes Middle Qi Yang, leading to excessive dampness. When the pivot fails to move, causing Spleen sinking and Stomach rebellious qi, fullness arises. In Houpo Shengjiang Banxia Gancao Renshen Tang, Ginseng and Licorice tonify the Middle and support Yang, while Magnolia Bark, Pinellia, and Ginger descend turbidity and resolve stagnation.
Magnolia Bark (Jin Yi, peeled), Ginger (Ban jin), Prepared Licorice (Liang Er, honey-fried), Pinellia (Ban sheng, washed), Ginseng (Yi liang).
Take these five herbs, boil in ten dou of water until three sheng remain. Strain and take one sheng warm, three times a day.
Following purgation in Shaoyang disease, if there is vexation, abdominal fullness, and restlessness (unable to lie down or sit up comfortably), Zhizi Houpo Tang is indicated.
Purgation damages Middle Qi, causing the pivot to fail to move, resulting in abdominal fullness. Yangming qi rebels upward, turbid yin fails to descend, becoming putrid and obstructive, clouding the Palace (Heart), leading to vexation. Extreme vexation causes restlessness. In Zhizi Houpo Tang, Magnolia Bark and Immature Bitter Orange drain fullness and direct rebellious qi downward, while Gardenia induces vomiting of turbid stasis to relieve vexation.
Gardenia (Shi si mei, split), Magnolia Bark (Si liang, ginger-fried), Immature Bitter Orange (Si mei, soaked in water, pith removed, stir-fried).
Take these three herbs, boil in two and a half sheng of water until one and a half sheng remain. Strain and divide into two doses. Take one dose warm. If vomiting occurs, stop subsequent doses.
If a physician uses pill medicines for severe purgation in Shaoyang disease, and body heat persists with slight vexation, Zhizi Ganjiang Tang is indicated.
Severe purgation damages Middle Qi, causing turbid yin to rebel upward. Stasis generates and putrefies, blocking the Ministerial Fire from descending properly, resulting in body heat and mental vexation. In Zhizi Ganjiang Tang, Dried Ginger directs rebellious qi downward and warms the Middle, while Gardenia induces vomiting of stasis to relieve vexation.
Gardenia (Shi si mei), Dried Ginger (Yi liang).
Take these two herbs, boil in three and a half sheng of water until one and a half sheng remain. Strain and divide into three doses. Take one dose warm. If vomiting occurs, stop subsequent doses.
After sweating or purgation, if there is vexation-heat and a sensation of obstruction in the chest, Zhizi Chi Tang is indicated.
Sweating and purgation damage Middle Qi. Stomach Earth rebels upward, turbid qi fills and stagnates, preventing Ministerial Fire from descending. This results in Heart Palace vexation-heat and chest obstruction. In Zhizi Chi Tang, Fermented Soybean regulates Middle Qi and opens obstruction, while Gardenia induces vomiting of turbid stasis to relieve vexation-heat.
