Trichosanthis Radix (Liang Er)
The above single herb. Use five sheng of water. Boil to obtain one sheng of liquid. Divide into two doses. First, take one sheng of Qingdan Zhuli (Green and Pale Bamboo Sap), mix with two sheng of water, and boil two liang of fine silver until the volume is halved. Remove the silver. Allow the patient to drink this liquid first.
After a short while. then administer the Gualou Tang (Trichosanthes Decoction). When urination becomes smooth, the disease will be cured. Gualou Tang and Yin Zhi (Silver Juice) must be taken cold.
Hu notes: Gualou Tang is bitter and cold, clearing heat in the middle jiao; Yin Zhi is sweet and cold, having a descending effect. It is suitable for patients suffering from heat-toxin attacking upwards and floating spirit qi.
Pang Anshi said. After the recent recovery from illness. Qi, blood, body fluids, and essence are depleted. One must strictly avoid all laborious activities. Any mental exertion such as speaking or overthinking, physical exertion such as combing hair or bathing (hui, meaning washing face), or manual labor generates heat. This may cause the disease to recur as it was initially. Furthermore, after recent recovery, the essence and marrow are dry. Sexual intercourse must absolutely be avoided. Engaging in sexual activity causing recurrence due to fatigue (Lao Fu) leads to death. Thus, Du You Gu Zixian, after recovering from illness. Hua Fu instructed him. To be cautious and avoid sexual intercourse. Other forms of fatigue can be tolerated, but female-related fatigue (Nü Lao) leads to immediate death. This is Nü Lao Fu (recurrence due to sexual exhaustion), not Yin Yang Yi (mutual transmission of disease between sexes). Additionally, the *Su Wen* states: those who have residual symptoms after a febrile disease. This is because the stomach and intestines are still weak after recovery. If one eats too much, digestion is difficult. This causes the disease to recur as before. This is Shi Fu (recurrence due to improper diet). For recently recovered individuals. robust persons require two months of rest, while weak persons require one hundred days. Only then will there be no recurrence of disease.
(General Discussion) Treating headache and limb pain caused by Lao Fu (recurrence due to fatigue) following Tian Xing (epidemic) diseases.
Cong Bai (Scallion White) and Chi (Fermented Soybean) (each half sheng)
Use two and a half sheng of water. Boil Cong Bai until soft. Strain out the dregs. Add thirty-seven pieces of Xiong Shu Shi (Male Rat Feces). Grind into powder. Mix evenly. Divide into two doses. If not cured, prepare again.
Also treats Tian Xing disease recurrence with fever. From morning to evening, lower back pain occurs. Stiffness and heaviness in the head and neck are treated with Gegen Jiang Chi Tang (Kudzu, Ginger, and Fermented Soybean Decoction).
Shaoyao (Peony Root) and Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (each one and a half liang); Chi (Fermented Soybean) and Cong Bai (Scallion White) (each one and a half he); Gegen (Kudzu Root) (two liang)
Chop coarsely. Use three sheng of water. Boil to two sheng. Add Chi. Boil to one and a half sheng. Strain out dregs. Drink one zhan (cup) warm.
Also treats Tian Xing disease recurrence with fever, vomiting, and poor appetite after recovery. Use Lugeng Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction).
Lugeng (Reed Rhizome) (half sheng); Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (two liang); Jupi (Tangerine Peel) and Pipaye (Loquat Leaf) (each one liang)
Use three sheng of water. Boil to one and a half sheng. Strain out dregs. Drink one zhan (cup) warm. If there is heart irritability and restlessness, add Shigao (Gypsum) two liang. Add one sheng of water. Boil to two sheng.
Hu notes regarding the above three formulas. All state they treat Tian Xing (epidemic) diseases. The origin of this etiology begins with Chao Yuanfang's *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Source Book of All Categories of Diseases). *Yuan Hou Lun* bases its discussion on Zhang Zhongjing's theories, categorizing them as Shang Han (Cold Damage), Shi Qi (Seasonal Miasma), Re Bing (Febrile Disease), and Wen Bing (Warm Disease). Shang Han refers to contracting winter cold, affecting the righteous Qi. Shi Qi refers to abnormal cold and heat qi of the four seasons. Re Bing is more severe than Wen Bing; the classics state all five zang organs can suffer from it. Wen Bing results from winter cold injury manifesting in spring. These four diseases share similar progression through days one to eight or nine, and transmission patterns, identical to Shang Han. Among the four, only Shi Qi shows similar symptoms regardless of age or gender. Therefore, the *Wai Tai Mi Yao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) names it Tian Xing. Currently, Pang Anshi includes it in the Shang Han section of his *Zong Bing Lun* (General Treatise on Diseases). My opinion is that this is simply Shang Han occurring in the four seasons. The above three formulas all treat Yang Ming Lao Fu. However, Gegen Jiang Chi Tang specifically mentions treating lower back pain and stiffness/heaviness in the head and neck, which should belong to the Tai Yang channel. Was there an error during transcription? I tentatively include them here for reference.
Also treats cases where the disease has not fully resolved, and subsequent labor causes heat qi to attack the chest. Hand and foot spasms and convulsions resembling stroke occur. Use Gualou Zhuru Tang (Trichosanthes and Bambusa Sap Decoction).
