Lacquer trees belong to the Wood element. Wood generates Fire and controls Earth; therefore, only individuals with Spleen Qi deficiency are prone to lacquer poisoning. If generalized edema or vomiting occurs, use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Fuling (Poria). If generalized pruritus or itching of the face and eyes occurs, use Qianhu Tang (Peucedani Decoction) added with Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus). If there is copious purulent discharge, accompanied by itching or pain, use Chaihu Shanzhi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder). If vomiting with anorexia, or diarrhea with abdominal distension occurs, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). For external treatment, apply iron rust powder mixed with a suitable medium, or crab roe; or use sesame oil; or soak Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and apply wet compresses to the affected area; or rub with Fanshi (Alumen) powder and Zisu (Perillae Folium) powder; or apply human breast milk; or apply Wumingyi (Haematitum) powder mixed with water; or wash with decoction made from high-quality Sichuan peppercorns; or apply fresh ginger juice; or wash with a strong decoction of dried lotus leaves. All these methods are effective.
*Danxi Yanyi* states: "Dogs belong to Yang and their nature is hot. Generally, extreme heat generates Wind; when Wind and Heat contend, it results in mania, madness, and fright. This is the natural law of phenomena." Currently, people treat dog bites from rabid dogs by using drying and heating agents such as Badou (Crotonis Fructus) and Banmao (Mylabris) to purge toxins via urination, observing shapes resembling dogs in the urine. They fail to realize that this is 'using heat to assist heat,' causing blood damage rather than eliminating dog venom. Caution is essential. I have seen cases in the Wu region where patients bitten by dogs, presenting with bleeding and fever, were administered Banmao and Badou. When convulsions and teeth grinding ensued, they were considered signs of severe toxicity, leading to further administration of these drugs, which solidified the pathology and resulted in death. It is unknown that all conditions involving injury and fright are governed by the Liver Meridian. The Liver belongs to Wood; Wood generates Fire, and Fire generates Wind. Thus, convulsions and teeth grinding are mostly caused by fright from being bitten by a dog, not exclusively by rabid dogs. If attacked by Wind pathogens, resulting in trismus and opisthotonos, Dingfeng San (Wind-Calming Powder) should be used, taken with children's urine. Additionally, cleanse the wound with mouthwash before applying medication. If bleeding does not stop, apply Jiantao (Scirpi Radiatus Caulis). For other symptoms, treat according to the protocols for Tetanus. Danxi's warning must not be ignored. If truly bitten by a rabid dog, Badou and Banmao may be temporarily used. This employs 'using poison to attack poison,' which is logically consistent. Once toxins have entered internally, these agents are necessary to expel them. However, once the disease is resolved, administration must cease, followed by regulatory and tonifying treatments to ensure safety. Prolonged use is inadvisable. Rabid dogs typically exhibit specific signs: protruding tongue, drooling, drooping tail, and red eyes, making them easy to identify. Severely injured victims may emit sounds resembling dog barks, distinguishing them from ordinary cases. Treatment cannot be uniform.
Case 1: A child bitten by a rabid dog presented with bleeding, convulsions, and profuse phlegm. He was treated externally with Yuzhen San and internally with Baolong Wan, resulting in recovery.
Case 2: A child with inherent timidity and weakness was bitten by a rabid dog, presenting with aversion to cold, fever, and bleeding. Due to excessive consumption of Banmao, his symptoms resembled Tetanus. He was treated externally with Yuzhen San and internally with Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction) with increased Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), resulting in recovery.
Case 3: A child bitten by a dog presented with cyanosis, convulsions, and teeth grinding. This was due to fright. Some attributed it to a rabid dog bite and administered Banmao, leading to death.
Case 4: A child bitten by a dog presented with trismus, fever, and convulsions. I diagnosed this as Acute Convulsive Disease (Ji Jing Feng). The family did not believe me and administered Banmao, leading to death.
Prescription for rabid dog bites: Use seven Banmao, removing heads, wings, and feet. Stir-fry with a pinch of glutinous rice until the rice turns yellow. Grind into powder and take orally with water on an empty stomach.
Another method: Use Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Xionghuang (Realgar), each five qian, ground into powder. Take orally on an empty stomach mixed with Coriander Seed Oil.
Yuzhen San (also known as Mingdan/Destiny-Grasping Pill): Treats trauma, wind-cold headache, and opisthotonos.
Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, processed) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome) in equal parts.
Grind into powder. For Tetanus, apply powder to the wound and take one qian mixed with warm wine. For trismus, take two qian mixed with children's urine. For critical cases with warmth remaining at the heart, urgently take three qian mixed with one cup of children's urine and decocted.
Treatment for injuries from snakes, scorpions, centipedes, and other harmful insects: Place sliced garlic on the painful area and moxa-bust over it. The toxic vapor will dissipate, and pain will cease immediately.
Another prescription: Burn Baijian (Alumen) over a lamp to collect the juice and drip it on the painful area, or take Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) powder mixed with wine. This is highly effective. Alternatively, apply Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) powder mixed with vinegar. Or melt Huangla (Beeswax) and drip it on the affected area.
Treatment for snakes entering body orifices: Apply moxa-bustion; the snake's tail will emerge.
Another method: Make a small incision in the snake's tail, insert Sichuan peppercorns, and the snake will exit. Immediately administer powder of Xionghuang (Realgar) and Zhusha (Cinnabar) mixed in Ginseng Decoction to resolve internal toxicity. Taking Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) or Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) powder mixed with wine is particularly effective.
Treatment for snakes coiling around the body: Pour hot water over the person, or roll the person on the ground to loosen the snake.
Treatment for bone fragments from snakes piercing the skin: Toxic pain can be treated by applying powder of burned rat feces, or by drinking hot wine and eating garlic.
Treatment for centipedes entering the throat and biting without killing: Administer chicken blood, then induce vomiting with sesame oil to expel both blood and the insect.
Treatment for accidental ingestion of leeches: Take a piece of dry mud from fields, three or four small dead fish (heads and bones removed), and ten shelled Badou (Crotonis Fructus). Grind together with the mud to form pills the size of mung beans. Swallow ten pills with cold field water (three to five for children). Diarrhea will occur shortly after. Then, administer Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Huangqi (Astragali Radix) to regenerate blood and Qi for self-healing.
Treatment for ureterid (earwig) urine causing millet-sized sores: Sores are red around the edges with white fluid in the center, causing chills and high fever throughout the body. Grind Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) juice and apply topically, or apply earth from swallow nests mixed with lard and vinegar. Immediate effect is expected. Washing with salt water is also effective.
Treatment for spider bites causing generalised skin lesions: Drink single-ingredient Sheep Milk.
Treatment for earthworms blowing air into the scrotum causing swelling, or severe bites resembling severe wind-stroke: Symptoms include loss of eyebrows and beard, and hearing earthworm sounds at night. Soaking in strong salt water decoction brings relief.
Treatment for mole cricket bites: Apply Duanshi (Ferrum Oxydatum) mixed with vinegar.
Treatment for venomous ant stings: Mix one qian of Xionghuang (Realgar) and five fen of Shexiang (Moschus), grind finely, and apply mixed with raw sesame oil.
Treatment for snake or insect stings: Apply dirt from pig teeth to the affected area.
Treatment for lizard bites: Press Qingmaxin (Green Hemp Core) with hands to extract juice and apply.
Treatment for various insects entering the ears: Roast pork until fragrant and place near the ear; insects will exit due to the scent. If the insect is dead inside, use a fine reed tube or goose feather quill to suction it out.
