A person has weak legs and cannot stand up, yet has a good appetite; when slightly hungry, the head and face become hot, accompanied by incessant coughing. This is also Wei syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome), for which the formula Qiwei Zhishen Tang (Cure-Wei Supreme-Efficacy Decoction) is prescribed:
Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 2 qian), Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Cure after thirty doses.
If injured by dampness, there will inevitably be aversion to dampness, with short and dark red urine. The prescription is:
Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Zhuling (Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium, 3 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 5 fen), Fuling (Poria, 5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Gingeri et Alumine, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Cure after one dose.
In this condition, dampness from external contraction is easy to treat, while dampness from internal injury is difficult to cure. For external dampness, diuresis leads to cure. If it is internal dampness, purging water depletes qi, and sweating leaks essence; only after strengthening the spleen and promoting qi circulation can treatment proceed. The prescription is:
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Yiren (Coicis Semen, 1 liang), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 3 qian), Hei Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus Ustus, 3 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula treats internal dampness, not external dampness. If more doses are desired, remove Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus).
Although this condition arises from wind-cold-dampness, it is also due to the deficiency of primordial qi within the body, allowing pathogenic factors to enter through the deficiency. If one attacks the pathogens without tonifying the healthy qi, recovery will be difficult. Now, amidst tonifying healthy qi, herbs that dispel wind-cold-dampness are added as assistants, and the Wei syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome) is cured. The prescription is:
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian), Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Gingeri et Alumine, 1 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Modern people use Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) to remove dampness, which is also correct reasoning; however, it cannot raise the qi to completely eliminate the dampness. One must raise the qi so that the water may disperse. The prescription is:
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Yiren (Coicis Semen, 5 qian), Qianshi (Euryales Semen, 5 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Gingeri et Alumine, 2 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula is a divine medicine for removing dampness. Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) used among Huangqi (Astragali Radix) is sufficient to raise qi and remove dampness. It further assists Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) in soothing qi; when qi rises, water disperses. Moreover, with Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Yiren (Coicis Semen), and Qianshi (Euryales Semen), all of which are damp-dispelling agents, how could there be no miraculous efficacy?
Any case involving dampness can be treated with this formula.
