If a person experiences headache and fever, accompanied by wind-cold cough, or mental restlessness leading to the accumulation of stagnant Qi (stagnant vital energy) within the body; or if the flow of Qi is obstructed with anger retained in the hypochondrium; in such cases, tonifying medicines must absolutely not be used. The prescription is as follows:
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 5 qian), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 2 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian), Danpi (Cortex Moutan, 1 qian), Bohe (Herba Menthae, 1 qian), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 2 qian), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
For headache, add Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1 qian); for eye pain, add Jili (Fructus Tribuli, 1 qian) and Ganjuhua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici, 1 qian); for nasal congestion, add Ziye (Folium Perillae, 1 qian); for sore throat, add Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 2 qian); for shoulder and back pain, add Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 qian) and Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii, 2 qian); for pain in both hands, add Jianghuang (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae) or Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, 1 qian); for pain in both hypochondria, double the dosage of Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) and Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba); for chest pain, add Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 qian); for abdominal pain that worsens upon pressure, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 2 qian); for abdominal pain that does not hurt upon pressure, add Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 qian).
Prescription for treating Liver Qi stagnation:
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 2 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 0.2 qian, stir-fried with wine), Jiaobaizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, fried, 0.5 qian), Fuling (Poria, 0.5 qian), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 0.8 fen, stir-fried with vinegar), Shenggancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, raw, 0.5 fen), Danpi (Cortex Moutan, 1 qian), Heishanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae, charred, 1 qian), Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis, processed, 0.3 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Anger injures the Liver, causing Liver Qi to rush between the stomach and esophagus, preventing Kidney Qi from ascending and Lung Qi from descending, thereby forming this syndrome. Treatment should primarily focus on resolving depression (opening stagnation). The prescription is as follows:
Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 3 qian), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1 qian), Yujin (Rhizoma Curcumae, 1 qian), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae, 1 qian), Suzi (Fructus Perillae, 1 qian), Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Albae, 1 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 fen), Fuling (Poria, 1 qian), Huafen (Radix Platycodonis, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this prescription lies in its apparent simplicity while containing profound principles. Generally, for Liver Qi stagnation, Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) and Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) must be used to soothe it. However, excessive use will inevitably obstruct acceptance. Therefore, these two herbs serve as the sovereign drugs, assisted by the cold dispersing properties of Yujin (Rhizoma Curcumae), phlegm-resolving properties of Jiezi (Semen Sinapis Albae), nodule-dispersing properties of Tianhuafen (Radix Platycodonis), middle-jiao harmonizing properties of Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), and dampness-draining properties of Fuling (Poria). The flavors and properties are mild and gentle, easy to absorb, engaging in no conflict but rather mutual affinity, naturally reaching the destination to resolve obstruction without encountering rigid resistance.
Another prescription:
Take one bowl each of Yin-Yang Water (water boiled and unboiled mixed), add a pinch of salt, stir vigorously over a hundred times until bubbles form, drink it, induce vomiting, and recover. For any phlegm in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) where there is an urge to vomit but inability to do so, drinking this will immediately induce vomiting.
Yet another prescription:
Use raw Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) ground into powder, made into pills with water the size of mung beans, insert into the nostrils to induce continuous sneezing, then drink water to stop it. This effectively treats aphasia due to wind-stroke, as well as sudden collapse from evil qi or ghost attack.
