In cases of excessive phlegm due to Qi deficiency, the root cause is essentially dampness. The method for treating phlegm should not merely focus on eliminating dampness; rather, tonifying Qi must be prioritized, assisted by herbs that resolve phlegm, to achieve efficacy. The prescription is as follows:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
The use of Shen Qu in this formula is often misunderstood; many believe it is a supreme herb for digesting food but not a divine product for resolving phlegm. However, they fail to realize that accumulated phlegm, being thick and sticky, is difficult to resolve. Only by using Shen Qu to disperse it can the accumulated, sticky phlegm be opened up. This is followed by Ban Xia and Chen Pi, which can then exert their effect. Although Ban Xia and Chen Pi can eliminate phlegm, without sufficient Ren Shen, how would the phlegm be eliminated? Ren Shen assists Qi, while Yi Yi Ren and Fu Ling strengthen the Spleen and eliminate dampness. Once dampness is removed, phlegm is also removed.
For patients with Qi deficiency and cold-phlegm, adding Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (3 qian) and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (0.5 qian) to the above formula is sufficient.
For patients with Qi deficiency and heat-phlegm, the prescription is as follows:
Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (2 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2 qian), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) (1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (2 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (0.3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
(The brilliance of this formula lies in its non-drying nature despite being a Qi-tonifying agent; it moistens to resolve phlegm, and once phlegm is cleared, Qi naturally becomes sufficient.)
For this condition, the prescription Tan Huo Shen Wan (Divine Pill for Phlegm-Fire) is used:
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (5 liang), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 liang), Jiao Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Carbonized) (2 liang), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) (2 liang), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) (2 liang), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) (2 liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (4 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (2 liang), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (2 liang).
Preparation method for Ban Xia: Soak in fresh ginger juice. Extract three liang of juice from ginger, mix with half a bowl of boiling water, and soak the Ban Xia. Soak for seven days each time, then remove and dry by roasting. Grind into fine powder. Cook old rice into porridge, mix with the powder, and mash to form pills. Take two to three qian per dose.
