[Congenital Inability to Open Eyes]
The newborn's inability to open the eyes is caused by the pregnant woman consuming overly rich and greasy foods, leading to the steaming of heat-toxin. This results in heat stagnation affecting the fetus's Spleen (Zang organ responsible for transformation and transportation). The eyelids belong to the Spleen, and their meridians are tightened due to heat, thus preventing the eyes from opening. Ancient methods prescribed internal administration of Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction, containing Sheng Di Huang, Chi Shao, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Tian Hua Fen, Sheng Gan Cao) and external application of a small amount of Xiong Dan (Bear Bile) and Huang Lian, washed with boiling water.
[Commentary by Chen Shouzhen] The upper and lower eyelids belong to Spleen Earth. Since heat is trapped in the Spleen, it is appropriate to clear and drain Spleen Fire. The Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong in Shengdi Huang Tang should be removed; the external use of Xiong Dan and Huang Lian is also considered too cold and harsh. Instead, use small amounts of Jin Chai Shi Hu (Dendrobium Nobile Stem), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), and Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), decocted and drunk. Externally, wash with soft silk soaked in clean cool boiled water, and the eyes will naturally open.
[Continuous Vomiting after Birth]
After leaving the womb, some infants suffer from constipation, causing foul matter to remain in the abdomen, leading to abdominal distension and continuous vomiting. Ancient methods primarily used Yi Nian Jin (One Pinch Gold, formula see "Failure to Feed"). If cold pathogen was encountered during delivery, entering the interior and disturbing the Stomach, manifesting as crying with bent waist and continuous vomiting of foam, ancient methods primarily used Xiang Su Yin (Agarwood and Perilla Drink) to warm and disperse [the cold] (containing Huo Xiang, Su Ye, Hou Po, Chen Pi, Zhi Ke, Fu Ling, Mu Xiang, Zhi Gan Cao, with Sheng Jiang as guide). If there was heat accumulation before birth, manifesting as yellow-red complexion, warm hands and feet, and vomiting of yellow sticky saliva, ancient methods primarily used Huang Lian Er Chen Tang (Coptis Two-Aged Phlegm Decoction, containing Ban Xia, Chen Pi, Fu Ling, Gan Cao, Huang Lian, with Sheng Jiang as guide). If there was cold accumulation before birth, manifesting as blue-white complexion, cold limbs, and vomiting of clear thin white foam, ancient methods primarily used Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction, formula see "Failure to Feed").
[Commentary by Chen Shouzhen] Continuous vomiting immediately after birth differs significantly between Stomach Heat and Stomach Cold. For Stomach Heat, simply use Dan Zhu Ru (Light Bamboo Shavings) and Sheng Gan Cao, decocted and taken orally. For Stomach Cold, simply use Dan Gan Jiang (Light Dried Ginger) and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), decocted and taken orally, which will stop the vomiting.
[Congenital Imperforate Anus]
In newborns, congenital closure of the anus has two causes. First, excessive heat-toxin stagnating in the anus. Ancient methods prescribed internal administration of Hei Bai San (Black and White Powder, containing half raw/half stir-fried black Qian Niu Zi, Bai Qian Niu Zi, Sheng Da Huang, Bing Lang, Chen Pi, Sheng Gan Cao) ground into powder and dissolved in warm honey water; externally, Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill, containing Su He Xiang You, An Xi Xiang, Ding Xiang, Mu Xiang, Tan Xiang, Chen Xiang, Bi Bo, Xiang Fu, He Zi, Wu Xi Jiao, Zhu Sha, Ru Xiang, Pian Nao, She Xiang) shaped like a jujube pit, inserted into the orifice. Second, obstruction by fatty membrane with no passage. Ancient methods first pierced it with a Jin Yu Zan (Gold and Jade Hairpin), punctured the membrane, and then guided treatment using Su He Xiang Wan as before.
[Commentary by Chen Shouzhen] With heat-toxin stagnation, Hei Bai San must absolutely not be used, as it damages the fragile intestines and stomach. Simply use Sheng Gan Cao powder mixed with a small amount of Huang Lian powder, decocted and taken orally, which is sufficient to clear heat and moisten the intestines. Regarding the membrane at the anal opening named "Men Qi Sheng" (Stifling Umbilical Birth Membrane): if thin, gently patting with hand breaks the membrane for passage; if thick, lightly pierce with Jin Yu Zan, insert an oil-paper wick to prevent re-closure. Even if the anal canal lacks a hole entirely, the treatment method remains the same.
