The middle of the child's lip suddenly swells; this is caused by Spleen Heat (Spleen Excess Heat). The ancient method uses Sheng Puhuang (Raw Coptidis Rhizoma? No, *Pollen Typhae*, Raw), Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Bingpian (Borneol), ground together into a fine powder, mixed with Sesame Oil (Mayou) for topical application, which is effective.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] If the upper and lower lips are red and swollen, applying Puhuang and other medicines externally is indeed effective. However, if swelling turns black with unbearable pain and itching, it is advisable to use four old large-hole copper coins of similar size to the lesion, rubbing them frequently with Pig Fat (Zhuyou) on a stone surface. In cases where the skin has broken down and weeping fluid, it is better to use Tongqing (Malachite), Gongfen (Lead Carbonate), Mingfan (Alumen), Dingshang Meihua Bingpian (Top-grade Plum-blossom Borneol), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Shexiang (Musk), ground together into a fine powder. For broken areas, sprinkle the dry powder directly; for dry areas, mix with Pig Fat for application, which is particularly effective.
When red and white granules suddenly appear at the edge of the child's lip, this is called Lip Ding (Ding sore on the lip). Symptoms include headache, aversion to cold alternating with fever, pain, and itching; there are also cases of numbness without sensation of pain or itching. The ancient method first examines the popliteal fossa (back of the knee); if purple veins are visible, prick them with a silver needle to bleed. Externally, apply fresh Rooster Comb Blood (Jiguanxue) to the lip, or cut open a live Toad (Chanma), take its liver, and apply it; or remove the shell of a fresh Clam (Xian), mash it, and apply it. All are effective.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Lip Ding often progresses to headache, chest oppression, and coma; treatment must be administered promptly, otherwise it becomes incurable. Internally, decoct Zihua Diding (Viola Yedoensis), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Baiguo (Ginkgo Semen), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) for oral administration. Externally, apply mashed Ascaris (Hui Chong); if Ascaris is unavailable, use one qian of baked Wugu Chong (Fermented Bean Curd Worms), ground into powder, mixed with 3 fen of Bai Fan (Alumen) and 3 fen of Chansu (Toad Venom), dissolved in Baijiu (White Spirit/Liquor), and applied to the Ding sore. Soon after, the Ding will rupture and discharge toxic fluid, leading to recovery.
Childhood Lip Chuang (Lip Ulcer/Canker), whether broken or unbroken, is caused by Heat-Toxin accumulating in the Spleen. Simply use Wasong (Leucoscyphus Sabdariffae Calyx), mashed with Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi), adding a little salt for application; or use juice extracted from Lan Diany e (Isatis Leaf) for washing. Both are effective.
Childhood Lip Jin (Lip Contraction/Stiffness), where the child cannot eat from the onset, requires urgent treatment. Take new white cloth, roll it up like a wine glass, ignite it, and place it over a knife cut. When the juice exudes from the knife cut, collect the juice and apply it to the lips, more than ten times a day. Additionally, consume liquor mixed with ash from burnt blue cloth; recovery occurs overnight.
For childhood Lip Gan Xue Chu (Dry Lips with Bleeding), simply mash raw Tao Ren (Persicam Semen) and mix with Pig Fat for application. If extremely dry with intolerable redness and swelling, moisten with saliva occasionally, though this may still be insufficient. In such cases, boil Tofu with Pine Needles (Song Mao) for about half a day, take the Tofu, and apply it, changing several times a day, which is effective.
When the child's lip suddenly protrudes outward, resembling a pig's snout, this is named Chun Jun (Lip Mushroom/Tumor), caused by Heart-Spleen Heat-Toxin, requiring emergency rescue. Find ten live Dilong (Earthworm/Qu Shan), mash them, mix with two qian of Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) powder and a little Hui Mian (Ash Flour), blend with Vinegar, and apply to both soles (Yongquan area), binding with cloth, changing every half day. Internally, administer the Lip Ding Decoction (see above). Continue until cured.
