Children who have irregular dietary habits in daily life suffer from internal food stagnation and injury, while simultaneously being attacked by external wind-cold pathogens. The symptoms manifest as fever with aversion to cold, headache, anorexia, belching with a foul odor, vomiting of sour fluid, constipation, dysuria, abdominal heat, and distension. For cases with prominent heat signs, the ancient method advocates using Shuangjie Tongsheng Tang (Double-Resolution Tongsheng Decoction), which employs a double-resolution strategy (containing seventeen herbs such as Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) and Natrii Sulfas (Piaoxiao, 朴硝), with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) as guides). For cases without heat signs, the ancient method advocates using Huoxiang Zhengqi Tang (Agastache Decoction for Rectifying the Qi), employing a harmonizing strategy (containing ten herbs such as Agastachis Herba (Huoxiang, 藿香) and Perillae Folium (Suye, 苏叶), with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and Jujubae Fructus (Hongzao, 红枣) as guides). After the exterior pathogen is resolved, the ancient method further advocates using Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) supplemented with Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha, 山楂), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu, 神曲), and Malto (Maiya, 麦芽) to promote digestion and resolve stagnation.
[Chen Shouzhen’s Note] Since it is a common cold, there should naturally be whole-body heat, uninterrupted day and night. If there is no heat, it should only be termed food injury, not common cold complicated by food stagnation. Although this condition is indeed suitable for double resolution, the prescription should primarily address the common cold, with only one or two herbs addressing the food stagnation being sufficient. The formula uses Mint Tip (Bohe Jian) 1 qian, Perilla Leaf (Zisu Ye) 8 fen, Tangerine Peel (Guang Chenpi) 1.5 qian, Charred Medicated Leaven (Jiao Jianqu) 1 qian, Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao Qiao) 8 fen, with five slices of fresh Radish (Sheng Luobo) as a guide.
Children’s zang-fu organs are constitutionally prone to heat. Now, having been injured by wind-cold, wind and heat pathogens contend with each other, causing fire pathogens to become even more vigorous. Symptoms include flushed face and cracked lips, dryness of the mouth and nose, severe aversion to cold with high fever, thirst with desire for cold drinks, mental restlessness, delirium and mania, and difficulty in urination and defecation. The ancient method also advocates using Shuangjie Tongsheng Tang (Double-Resolution Tongsheng Decoction) (formula seen previously). If after taking the medicine sweating occurs and bowel/bladder functions normalize, and although the illness slightly subsides, the heat remains unreduced, the ancient method further advocates using Liangge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) combined with Tianshui San (Heavenly Water Powder), decocted with Spargani (Dengxincao, 灯芯) as a guide.
[Chen Shouzhen’s Note] Common cold complicated by heat originates from initial wind-cold invasion. It must be understood that once wind-cold transforms, it becomes heat; therefore, all warming herbs are strictly contraindicated. One should use only Clean Forsythia Fruit (Jing Lianqiao) 1.5 qian, Light Bamboo Leaf (Dan Zhuye) 1.5 qian, Frost-treated Mulberry Leaf (Shuang Sangye) 1.5 qian, Dried Scutellaria Root (Ku Huangqin) 5 fen, Calcined Talcum (Fei Huashi) 3 qian, Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao) 5 fen, with fifteen cun of Spargani (Dengxincao, 灯芯) as the dosage form.
In children with common cold, if the pathogenic factor has not yet resolved and they are subsequently startled by fright, symptoms such as heart palpitations and timidity, restless sleep, body heat with irritability, and bluish-red complexion appear. The ancient method advocates using Shusan San (Disperse Exterior Powder) (containing eleven herbs such as Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) and Perillae Folium (Suye, 苏叶), with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) as a guide), followed by Liangjing Wan (Cool Fright Pill) (containing Gentiana Root (Longdancao, 龙胆草), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 青黛), Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng, 钩藤), and Scutellaria Root (Huanglian, 黄连), with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) as a guide), to be decocted and taken orally.
[Chen Shouzhen’s Note] For common cold complicated by fright, immediate clearing and resolving are required at the onset to prevent the cold from triggering fright; this is the primary principle. One should use only Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao Qiao) 2 qian, Bamboo Heart (Zhuanjuanxin, 竹卷心) 2 qian, Tibetan Amber (Tianzhuhuang, 天竺黄) 1.5 qian, Small Immature Bitter Orange (Xiao Zhishi, 小枳实) 5 fen, Moisten Rehmannia Root (Run Xuanshen, 润玄参) 5 fen, Processed Arisaema Cum Bile (Zhi Danning, 制胆星) 3 fen, Pumice Stone (Haifushi, 海浮石) 1.5 qian, Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao) 3 fen, with three qian of Sea Cucumber (Dan Haizhe, 淡海哲) and three fresh Water Chestnuts (Sheng Biqi, 生荸荠) as guides.
