The infant's eyelids are red, swollen, and ulcerated, with pain and itching making it difficult to open the eyes. This condition arises because toxic heat attacks the eyes from below, hence these symptoms. Ancient methods primarily advocate internal administration of Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction; see formula under "Eyes Unable to Open") to clear heat. For external use, Zhenjin San (True Gold Powder; composed of Sheng Huanglian [Coptidis Rhizoma], Huangbai [Phellodendri Cortex], Danggui [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], Chishao [Paeoniae Rubra Radix], Xingren [Armeniacae Semen Amarum], processed into powder, soaked in human milk overnight, dried, and ground into an extremely fine powder) is mixed with fresh Sheng Dihuang juice (juice of Rehmanniae Radix Recens) and frequently applied to the eyes until cured.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Besides toxic heat, there are cases caused by inadequate cleaning during delivery, leading to filth and foulness soaking into the corners of both eyes, resulting in redness and ulceration. If this persists for a long time without healing, it is named Lanxian Fengyan (Rotten Margins Wind Eye). Internally, treat with Sangye (Mori Folium), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Dengxincao (Junci Medulla), decocted in running water. Regarding external medications, if Lian Yao (medicines containing Coptidis Rhizoma) are used to suppress fire pathogens, the fire cannot disperse outward, inevitably causing eyeball pain and chronic non-healing. It is better to use 3 qian of fresh green Tonglu (Verdigris), grind it into powder, mix thickly with raw honey, and coat the inside of a coarse bowl. Burn Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) to produce smoke, cover the bowl over the smoke, and fumigate until the verdigris turns scorched black. Remove, cool down, blend evenly with human milk, steam over rice, and apply to the affected area using a duck feather. This can eradicate the root cause. Alternatively, use Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Wen Ge (Veneris Concha), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), add a small amount of Tonglu, decoct in water, and wash the eyes while hot. The effect is miraculous.
Redness inside the infant's eyes indicates accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian attacking upwards. The treatment should guide Bing Huo (Fire of the Bing Stem, referring to Heart Fire) out through urination. The method involves using Daochi San (Guiding Out Red Powder) with a small addition of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), so the redness will subside.
Yellow color inside the infant's eyes indicates Spleen Heat. Swelling of the upper and lower eyelids indicates Wind-Heat in the Spleen Meridian. The treatment uses Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), with a small addition of Hei Zhiren (Gardeniae Fructus Carbonized), decocted and taken orally, so the yellow color will subside.
Frequent blinking of the infant's eyes is due to Liver Wind entering the eyes. The sensation feels like wind blowing from all directions, which the child cannot endure, hence the frequent blinking. The treatment uses Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Shijueming (Haliotidis Squama), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), with Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) as a guiding herb. Decoct and take orally for effectiveness.
Infants suffering from prolonged coughing, with dark and swollen eye sockets and white sclera appearing blood-red, are diagnosed with Xueyan (Blood Eye). The treatment uses Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), and Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), decocted and taken orally. Externally, use equal parts of large Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) and Daheidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum), soak in water overnight, extract, and make into a paste. Apply to the eyelids. The fluid will naturally dissipate, and after bloody tears flow, the swelling and darkness will also disappear.
