A wealthy man had a foul, fishy odor in his anterior yin region and suffered from abdominal discomfort due to consecutive days of drinking alcohol. He sought treatment from the Master (Li Dongyuan). The Master said: "The anterior yin is where the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian passes through, emerging at the tip of the genitals. All odors are governed by the Heart and dispersed into the five directions as five odors; for instance, the Liver corresponds to the fishy odor. This principle applies here. One should drain Xingjian (LR2) on the Liver Meridian to treat the root cause, and then drain Shaochong (HT9) on the Heart Meridian to treat the branch symptoms. If the patient dislikes acupuncture, medication can be used to eliminate the pathogen. Alcohol has qi and flavor that are entirely Yang, generating damp-heat internally. This combines wind-damp-heat in the Lower Jiao to form pathogenic factors. Thus, the classics state: 'The Lower Jiao is like a ditch,' and also: 'For pathogens located below, draw them out and exhaust them.' Alcohol is water of damp-heat and heat, so it is appropriate to drain it via the anterior yin."

Chaihushao (Bupleuri Radix, tip), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, each 5 fen), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Dangguishao (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, tip), Caolongdan (Gentianae Scabrae Radix, each 3 fen).
The above herbs are chopped like hemp seeds or beans. Generally, this constitutes one dose. Add three cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, strain, and take slightly warm on an empty stomach. Immediately follow with a good meal to settle the medicine. In this prescription, Chaihu enters the Liver Meridian as a guiding herb. Zexie, Cheqianzi, and Mutong possess light and penetrating flavors that promote urination and also remove the fishy odor; this is called "drawing out and exhausting pathogens located below." Shengdihuang and Caolongdan's bitter-cold nature drains damp-heat from alcohol. Combined with Cheqianzi and similar herbs, they withdraw pathogenic factors from the Liver. Since the Liver governs Blood, Danggui is used to nourish the insufficient blood within the Liver.
