Summary:
Lao Zhai refers to pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), also known as consumption. The ancients believed that there exist "Three Corpses" (San Shi) and "Three Worms" (San Chong) within the human body that cause harm and lead to Lao Zhai. *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Source Book of All Diseases), Volume 23, "Syndromes of Corpse Diseases," states: "The human body naturally contains Three Corpses and various worms, born with us. These worms abhor evil; if provoked, they harm humans. They can communicate with spirits and often attract external pathogens to cause harm. Their manifestations include lethargy and silence, where one does not know the source of suffering but feels discomfort everywhere; or abdominal pain and distension; or protruding masses; or spasms pulling at the waist and spine; or mental confusion." It further identifies the Three Corpses as Fei Shi (Flying Corpse), Dun Shi (Escaping Corpse), and Chen Shi (Sinking Corpse), along with Feng Shi (Wind Corpse) and Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission, collectively called the Five Corpses) and Fu Shi (Latent Corpse). Daoist belief holds that the Three Corpses are malevolent deities hiding within the human body. On every Geng-Shen day, they report human sins to the Heavenly Gods, damaging physical and mental health. The Upper Corpse is Qing Gu, which attacks the eyes; the Middle Corpse is Bai Gu, which attacks the five zang organs; the Lower Corpse is Xue Gu, which attacks the stomach and life force. When qigong practice reaches a certain level, it can drive away the Three Corpses and promote longevity.
The Three Worms refer to Chang Chong (Ascaris lumbricoides / roundworm), Chi Chong (Fasciolopsis buski / giant intestinal fluke), and Nuo Chong (Enterobius vermicularis / pinworm). These are human parasitic worms. Together with Fu Chong, Bai Chong, Rou Chong, Fei Chong, Wei Chong, and Ruo Chong, they are collectively known as the Nine Worms.
This section proposes two daoyin (guiding and pulling) methods targeting the characteristics of "Lao Zhai disease." One involves embracing the head with both hands, taking long inhalations, and slow exhalations, then sitting down, slowly extending the legs, embracing the knees with hands, lowering the head between the knees, and performing thirteen repetitions of embracing the head. The other involves clenching teeth and swallowing qi. Clenching teeth is also called "Zhuo Chi." In Chapter 19, "Mouth and Teeth Section," of this book, it states: "Method 1: Sit facing east, hold breath for four cycles, clench upper and lower teeth thirty-six times. Treats toothache." It is also believed that regularly clenching teeth "prevents toothache, keeps hair dark and firm, and prevents headaches." The method for clenching teeth can be: first clench molars thirty-six times, then incisors thirty-six times, then interlock teeth to clench canines thirty-six times each, and finally lick the gums three to five times with the tongue. It is best performed after brushing and rinsing in the early morning. It can also be done at any time.
