Tonifying blood and qi, regulating the spleen and stomach, clearing the lungs and nourishing the kidneys; this is an essential medicine for routine preventive conditioning and for recovery after severe illness.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (remove the rhizome, 8 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (choose the white and clean ones, avoid those that are dark or black, net weight 1 jin), Chuan Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wash with wine, remove head and tail, dry thoroughly, use 8 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) (remove rhizome and tips, 8 liang), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix) (remove heart, net weight 8 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (remove heart, net weight 8 liang), Huai Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (choose those that are plump, sink in water, and not shriveled), Shu Huai Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (choose those that are plump, sink in water, and not shriveled, each 10 liang), Gan Zhou Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) (remove stems, 8 liang), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (remove stems, 4 liang).
Slice the above herbs and process them cleanly. Place them in a copper pot and soak with water, with the water level two cun above the herbs. Boil using alternating mild (Wen) and strong (Wu) fire until no moisture remains on the surface of the herbs. Squeeze out the clear juice using a new cloth and set aside separately. Put the dregs into a mortar, pound them into a paste, return them to the pot, add water two cun higher than the dregs, and boil again. When the water on the surface of the herbs dries up, squeeze out the clear juice again. Pound the dregs again and boil again. Repeat this process three times until the dregs have no taste. Discard the dregs. Combine the juices from the three extractions and return them to the pot. Boil over a specific heat (attribute fire) until it resembles a thin paste. Add 8 liang of refined honey, boil for two or three more boils, then remove from heat. After staying overnight, clear water will float on the surface; this should also be removed. Store the prepared paste in a well-water vat to eliminate "fire toxicity" for three days. Take half a cup each time, mixed with boiling plain water, taken on an empty stomach away from meals, twice a day. It yields remarkable effects.
This is the premier medicine for tonifying the Kidney and Liver, improving hearing and vision, preventing disease, and prolonging life.
He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) (use equal parts of red and white varieties, quantity as needed). Steam in a clay pot using a willow wood steamer. Layer one layer of Hong Zao (Jujubae Fructus), then one layer of Hei Dou (Sojae Semen Nigrum), then place the He Shou Wu on top of the beans. Cover with another layer of Hei Dou and another layer of Hong Zao. Steam slowly over low heat for half a day, until the beans are extremely soft. While still hot, crush the He Shou Wu, dry it in the sun, and grind it into a fine powder. For every 1 jin of herb powder, mix with 2 liang of Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (stems and leaves removed, ground separately into powder). Use the ingredients of Ren Shen Gu Ben Wan (Ginseng and Rehmannia Pill) to make a paste, mix with the powder, and form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 99 pills each time, washed down with plain water on an empty stomach. I have personally prepared and taken this prescription, repeatedly achieving remarkable effects which cannot be fully described.
