Huangdi asked Qibo: The qi of the four seasons has different forms. The onset of all diseases arises from specific causes. Regarding the methods of moxibustion and acupuncture, which one is the fixed standard?
Qibo replied: The qi of the four seasons resides in specific locations. The method of moxibustion and acupuncture is determined by obtaining qi at the acupoints. Therefore, in spring, select points on the Jing (Main) vessels, blood vessels, and between the muscles. For severe cases, use deep insertion; for mild cases, use shallow insertion. In summer, select the Sheng (Abundant) Jing vessels and Sun Luo (Branch Collaterals), selecting the spaces between muscles, penetrating the skin. In autumn, select the Jing (Spring) points; if the pathogen is in the Fu organs, select the He (Sea) points. In winter, select the Jing-Well and Ying-Spring points, requiring deep insertion and retention of the needle.
For Warm Malaria (Wen Nue) with no sweating, treat using the 59 Acupoints (referring to the Water-Heat 59 points). For Wind-induced Skin Distension (Feng Pi Zhang), treat using the 57 Acupoints (referring to the Head/Eye/Color 57 points). When extracting blood from the skin collaterals, extract it completely. For Sundiarrhea (Sun Xie, undigested food in stool), tonify the upper part of the Three Yin meridians and Yinlingquan (SP9); retain the needle for a long time until heat sensation spreads, then remove it.
For spasms in the Yang meridians, treat the Yang meridians; for spasms in the Yin meridians, treat the Yin meridians, using Su Ci (sudden/pricking needling). For Tu Zhu (a parasitic or miasma disease, text missing), first needle three cun below Huangu, using a Bi Zhen (sword needle). After insertion, perform manipulation, inserting deeply and withdrawing repeatedly to exhaust the pathogen. (Text missing here) The pathogen must be solidified for expulsion. If the pulse comes slowly, there is irritability; if it comes urgently, there is calmness. Needle every other day until the pathogen is exhausted, then stop. During medication, drink the "closing medicine" formula at the time of needling. Do not eat when just needled; do not drink when just eating; do not eat other foods, for 135 days.
If Zhu Bi (Fixed Bi syndrome) persists due to chronic cold, suddenly select Zusanli (ST36). "Bone as the dry frame" (these three characters are erroneously derived from the Meridian Chapter). For intestinal obstruction, select Zusanli (ST36); excess conditions are drained, deficiency conditions are tonified. For Li Feng (Leprosy), normally needle the swollen area. After needling, use a sharp needle at the site, press to expel evil qi, stopping only when swelling subsides. Diet should be normal, avoiding other foods.
If there is constant borborygmus, qi rushing up to the chest, panting unable to stand long, this is pathogen in the Large Intestine. Needle the Yuan of Huang (Shenque, CV8), Juxu Shanglian (ST37), and Zusanli (ST36). If lower abdominal pain radiates to the testicles, drawing the waist and spine, rushing up to the heart, this is pathogen in the Small Intestine (Jia Yi Jing adds "Small Intestine"). The Small Intestine meridian connects to the spermatic cord, belongs to the spine, penetrates the Liver and Lungs, and links to the Heart system. Excess qi leads to Jue Ni (rebellious qi), rushing up to the Stomach and Intestines, steaming the Liver, dispersing into the Huang membrane, and knotting at the umbilicus. Therefore, select the Yuan of Huang to dissipate it, needle the Taiyin (Spleen) to provide qi, select the Jueyin (Liver) to descend rebellious qi, select Juxu Xiaolian (ST39) to remove pathogen, and regulate according to the meridians traversed.
If prone to vomiting with bitter taste, frequent sighing, fear in the heart, feeling like being chased, this is pathogen in the Gallbladder, rebellion in the Stomach. Bile fluid leaking causes bitter mouth; Stomach qi rebelling causes vomiting of bitter fluid, termed "Gallbladder Vomiting." Select Zusanli (ST36) to descend Stomach qi; if Stomach qi rebels, needle the Shaoyang blood collaterals to close Gallbladder rebellion, then regulate excess and deficiency to remove pathogen.
If food cannot go down, chest diaphragm blocked, this is pathogen in the Stomach Wan (Epigastrium). If in the Upper Wan, needle to suppress and guide downward; if in the Lower Wan, dissipate and remove pathogen. Lower abdominal pain and swelling, inability to urinate, this is pathogen in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) constraint. Select the Da Luo (Great Collateral) of the Taiyang meridian, observe collaterals where Taiyang and Jueyin small collaterals knot with blood stasis; if swelling reaches the epigastrium, select Zusanli (ST36).
Observe the complexion and inspect the eyes ("Yi" is an error for "Mu", eye), knowing the dispersion and recurrence of pathogen. By viewing eye color, know the survival or death of the disease. Unify the form, listen to movement and stillness, hold the Qi Kou (Radial artery) and Ren Ying (Carotid artery) to view the pulse. If the pulse is firm, large, and slippery, the disease progresses daily; if soft, the disease will subside. All meridians' excess conditions resolve in three days. Qi Kou inspects Yin; Ren Ying inspects Yang.
The writing style is firm and outstanding, but the concluding paragraph lacks coherence and differs in style from the preceding text.
