These two herbs are taken in equal proportions, ground into powder, and three qian are taken orally on an empty stomach with wine.
Dampness has a downward nature, so the pathology is located in the middle and lower parts of the body. When dampness stagnates, it generates Heat; the struggle between Dampness and Heat causes pain. Huangbai is bitter; bitterness overcomes Heat, and its action directs downwards, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Cangzhu is drying; dryness overcomes Dampness, and it possesses acrid dispersing properties, thus serving as the Minister herb. Huangbai can remove Dampness from within Heat, while Cangzhu can remove Heat from within Dampness. The combination of these two yields wonderful effects, hence the name "Er Miao" (Two Wonders).
