According to the "Treatise on the Six Sections and Viscera Manifestations" (Liujie Zangxiang Lun): Heaven utilizes the "six-six" rhythm (referring to six cycles of Jiazi, totaling 360 days as a base) to constitute a year; humans utilize the "nine-nine" system to harmonize, calculating that the human body also has three hundred and sixty-five joints, corresponding to the long-standing laws of Heaven and Earth. (Note: "Six-six rhythm" refers to the cycle of six Jiazi periods, setting the time limit for a year. "Nine-nine system" refers to the number of Nine Fields surrounding the body, regulating the harmony of human form. It means that the three hundred and sixty-five joints of humans correspond to Heaven's "six-six" rhythm, which has been the case for a long time.) The so-called "six-six rhythm" and "nine-nine system" are used to correct Heaven's degrees (spatial/temporal measurement) and Qi numbers (patterns of climatic change). (Note: "Six-six rhythm" is Heaven's degree; "nine-nine system" is Heaven's Qi number. The so-called Qi number refers to the transformative Qi that generates all things. The celestial sphere is divided into 365 and 1/4 degrees. Dividing this evenly among the twelve solar terms results in 360 days for Qi, but adding small months leaves a deficit. Therefore, leap months are often set to adjust the sixty-four Qi. Why? Because of accumulated fractional differences. The generation of the earth is based on Yin and Yang; the movement of human spirit and Qi begins and ends with the Nine Qi. However, is not the function of "Nine" great! The "Book of Music" states: The Huangzhong pipe is nine cun long. On the day of Winter Solstice, Qi responds causing ash to fly; thus, the growth of all things depends on Nine Qi. Ancient nine cun is equivalent to modern seven cun and three fen; the difference arises because ancient standards were based on millet grains.) Heaven's degrees regulate the movement of the Sun and Moon. Qi numbers record the function of transformation and generation. (Note: "Regulate" means to measure. "Record" means to chronicle. Measuring the degrees of Sun and Moon movement clarifies their speed. Recording the function of transformation manifests when Qi arrives and responds. If Qi response is accurate, the principle of generation does not fail; by measuring speed, large and small months arise. Thus, the Sun's movement determines day and night length, the Moon's movement determines cold and heat, and the timing of storage and growth remains appropriate.) Heaven is Yang, Earth is Yin; the Sun is Yang, the Moon is Yin; their movements have divisions and records, and their orbits follow principles. The Sun moves one degree per day, the Moon moves thirteen degrees plus a fraction, so large and small months total three hundred and sixty-five days to form a year, accumulating Qi surplus to create leap months. (Note: The Sun moves slowly, covering one degree of the celestial sphere daily, completing a circle in 365 days with a fractional remainder. The Moon moves fast, covering over thirteen degrees daily, completing a circle in 29 days. "Plus a fraction" means beyond thirteen degrees, it moves an additional 7/19 degrees. The "Rites" and Han Dynasty "Records of Music and Calendar" state that the Twenty-Eight Mansions and stars move Westward along the sky, while the Sun, Moon, and five planets move Eastward. Modern Astronomers say they all move Eastward with the sky, turning from East to West. Various calendrical theories vary: Days 1-4, the Moon moves fastest (over 14 degrees/day); Days 5-8, next fastest (over 13 degrees/day); Days 9-19, slower (over 12 degrees/day); Days 20-23, slightly faster (over 13 degrees/day); Days 24-end month, fastest again (over 14 degrees/day). Current Astronomers say lunar motion is not uniform. There are periods of speed and slowness in the first and second halves of the month. Generally, the month is divided into four parts, each having speed variations. Although the Moon completes a circle in 27 days (361 degrees), the Sun covers 29 degrees in 29 days, while the Moon covers 287 degrees, falling short by 7 degrees. By the 30th day, the Sun catches up. This is a full month (30 days). Calculations show that reaching 10/13 indicates a full month. Reaching 5 and 6/13 indicates a deficient month (29 days). Thus, 365 days form a year. Precisely, 365 and 1/4 days form a year. Since fractions don't divide evenly, "six" is cited. If using six small months, a year would be only 345 days, short by over 11 days. Taking the Moon's deficit and adding annual surplus creates leap months after 32 days. The "Book of Documents" says: 360 days, adjusted by leap months, form the four seasons and the year. Accumulating surplus for leap months is due to the mismatch between lunar months and heavenly degrees.) Establishing the starting point, correcting the middle with major solar terms, and pushing the remainder to the end completes the Heavenly degrees. (Note: "Establishing the starting point" refers to ancient kings correcting time. Starting with Winter Solstice as the beginning of the year. "Correcting the middle" uses major solar terms to correct the first month. "Pushing remainder to the end" assigns leftover days to the year's end to accumulate into leap months, thus completing Heavenly degrees.) Heaven uses "six-six" as its rhythm, Earth uses "nine-nine" for harmony. Heaven has ten Heavenly Stems; the Sun completes six Jiazi cycles to finish a year, following the 360-day method. (Note: "Ten days" refer to the Ten Stems. Ten is the number of Heaven and Earth. The "Great Treatise" of I Ching says: Heaven Nine, Earth Ten. Sixty days make one Jiazi cycle; six cycles complete a year, representing the 360-day year method.) Since antiquity, those who connect with Heaven find the root of life in Yin and Yang. Their Qi connects with the Nine Provinces and Nine Orifices to Heaven. (Note: Primal Qi, or True Qi. Form is generated by Earth, Life is endowed by Heaven. Thus, the Qi nourishing life connects to Heaven, rooted in Yin and Yang. Hence: Humans born of Earth, life suspended from Heaven. Heaven and Earth combine Qi, creating Humans. Earth has Nine Provinces, Humans have Nine Orifices. Spirit and Qi interact.) Thus, life generates Five Elements, and Qi divides into Three Realms (Heaven, Earth, Human). (Note: Form exists through Five Elements operation, tracing back to Three Qi for generation. Hence "Generates Five, Qi is Three".) Three Qi form Heaven, Three Qi form Earth, Three Qi form Humans. (Not only do humans arise from Three Qi, but the Way of Heaven and Earth is the same. Hence, Qian and Kun hexagrams in I Ching must have three lines.) Three times three equals Nine. Nine divides into Nine Fields, which correspond to Nine Viscera. (Note: Nine Fields correspond to Nine Viscera. Outside the city is suburb, then field, then pasture, then forest, then plain, then wild—these are the Nine Fields.) Thus, there are Four Form Viscera and Five Spirit Viscera, totaling Nine Viscera to correspond. (Note: Four Form Viscera: 1. Head/Horns, 2. Eyes/Ears, 3. Mouth/Teeth, 4. Chest. These are external. Five Spirit Viscera: Liver, Heart, Lung, Spleen, Kidney. Spirit resides internally. Specifically: Liver stores Hun, Heart stores Shen, Spleen stores Yi, Lung stores Po, Kidney stores Zhi.) Heaven feeds humans with Five Qi, Earth feeds humans with Five Flavors. (Note: Five Qi enter organs: Dryness to Liver, Scorched to Heart, Fragrant to Spleen, Fishy to Lung, Rotten to Kidney. Five Flavors enter organs: Sour to Liver, Bitter to Heart, Sweet to Spleen, Pungent to Lung, Salty to Kidney. Clear Yang transforms into Qi and rises to Heaven; Turbid Yin forms Flavor and descends to Earth. Thus Heaven feeds Qi, Earth feeds Flavor.) Five Qi enter through the nose, store in Heart and Lung, making complexion bright and voice clear. Five Flavors enter the mouth, store in intestines and stomach, nourishing Five Qi. Harmonious Qi generates fluids; together they produce Spirit. (Note: Heart nourishes complexion, Lung governs voice. Qi stored in Heart/Lung makes color clear and voice distinct. Qi is mother of water/fluids. Flavors stored in gut nourish Qi internally. Combined Qi generates fluids. Fluids and Qi cooperate to generate Spirit.) What are Viscera Manifestations? (Note: Manifestation refers to what is visible externally.) The Heart is the root of life and the residence of Spirit. Its luster appears on the face, its substance fills the blood vessels. It is Taiyang within Yang, connecting with Summer Qi. (Note: Heart is the Sovereign Official. Spirit emerges from it. Fire rises, hence luster on face. Heart nourishes blood and governs vessels, hence fills vessels. Heart governs Summer, aligns with Taiyang, hence Taiyang within Yang, connecting with Summer.) The Lung is the root of Qi and the residence of Po. Its luster appears on hair, its substance fills the skin. It is Taiyin within Yang, connecting with Autumn Qi. (Note: Lung stores Qi, its spirit is Po. It nourishes hair and skin. Lung is Taiyin Qi, governing Autumn. Though located in Yang regions, it is Taiyin within Yang, connecting with Autumn.) The Kidney governs hibernation, is the root of sealing and storing, and the residence of Essence. Its luster appears on hair, its substance fills the bones. It is Shaoyin within Yin, connecting with Winter Qi. (Note: Earth closes, insects hide. Kidney governs Water, storing Essence from all viscera. Brain is sea of Marrow, Kidney governs Marrow/Bones. Hair is nourished by Brain, hence luster on hair, filling bones. Located in Winter Yin, hence Shaoyin within Yin, connecting with Winter.) The Liver is the root of fatigue tolerance and the residence of Hun. Its luster appears on nails, its substance fills the tendons, generating Blood and Qi. It is Shaoyang within Yang, connecting with Spring Qi. (Note: Movement relies on tendons. Liver governs tendons and Hun. Nails are extensions of tendons, nourished by Liver. East is beginning of generation, hence generating Blood/Qi. Shaoyang in Yang position, ruling Spring, hence Shaoyang within Yang, connecting with Spring.) Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Bladder, and Sanjiao are the root of granaries and residence of Ying Qi. They are called vessels, transforming dregs and transmitting flavors in and out. (Note: They receive and transport continuously, acting as granaries. Ying Qi originates in Middle Jiao, the domain of Spleen/Stomach. Food enters Spleen/Stomach, dregs exit via Sanjiao/Bladder, hence transmitting flavors.) Their luster appears on the white flesh around the lips, their substance fills the muscles. This is Zhiyin (Extreme Yin), connecting with Earth Qi. (Note: Mouth is Spleen's office, Spleen governs muscles. White flesh around lips is Spleen's manifestation. Spleen stores Earth Qi, matching Extreme Yin, hence connecting with Earth Qi.) All eleven viscera depend on the Gallbladder. (Note: From Heart to Gallbladder makes eleven. Gallbladder is upright and decisive, determining the eleven viscera. Viscera are internal, manifested externally—this is Viscera Manifestation. Heaven's virtue and Earth's Qi generate life. Essence comes from birth, two essences combining create Spirit. Following Spirit is Hun, exiting with Essence is Po. Responding to objects is Heart. Recalling is Yi, storing is Zhi. Changing based on Zhi is Si, planning far is Lu, handling matters is Zhi.) Therefore, if Renying pulse is one-fold stronger than Cunkou, disease is in Shaoyang; two-fold, in Taiyang; three-fold, in Yangming; four-fold or more is Ge Yang (blocking Yang). (Note: Yang pulse method. Shaoyang is Gallbladder, Taiyang is Bladder, Yangming is Stomach. One-fold excess means Renying is double Cunkou. Four-fold excess is extreme Yang, causing rejection/vomiting.) If Cunkou pulse is one-fold stronger than Renying, disease is in Jueyin; two-fold, in Shaoyin; three-fold, in Taiyin; four-fold or more is Guan Yin (closing Yin). (Note: Yin pulse method. Jueyin is Liver, Shaoyin is Kidney, Taiyin is Spleen. One-fold excess means Cunkou is double Renying. Four-fold excess is extreme Yin, causing obstruction/inability to urinate.) If both Renying and Cunkou pulses are four-fold stronger, it is Guan Ge (Closing and Blocking). The Guan Ge pulse is weak (or excessive), unable to reach the essence of Heaven and Earth, leading to death. (Note: Both exceeding normal by four-fold. Things cannot remain excessive forever; extremity leads to decline. Unable to sustain Heaven/Earth essence, death ensues. Yin and Yang both excessive, failing to interact, is Guan Ge. Those with Guan Ge die before their appointed time.)
