Because the mother's Qi cannot move spontaneously, difficult labor occurs. One should tonify the mother's Qi, so that the fetus becomes robust and delivery is facilitated. Thus, based on the Zi Su Yin (Perilla Decoction) from *Da Quan Fang* (Great Complete Formulas), Qi-tonifying herbs such as Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) were added. The formula was modified according to the mother's physical constitution, innate character, and seasonal factors, and named Da Sheng San (Birth-Attaining Powder). It contains Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Fu Pi (Citron Peel), Zi Su (Perilla Leaf), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), plus Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit) and Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit). Its efficacy far surpasses that of Shou Tai San (Fetus-Thinning Powder).
During pregnancy, medication primarily focuses on clearing heat and nourishing blood. After clearing heat and nourishing blood, the most crucial step is to tonify the Spleen, which serves as the foundation for cultivating post-heaven Yuan Qi (Original Energy). If treating Yang Kui (a specific condition or context), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) are not used; instead, Di Huang Yin (Rehmannia Decoction) is used with adding Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) and Xu Duan (Dipsacus Root) to tonify the Kidney. Since the fetus is anchored in the Kidney, securing the Kidney ensures the stability of the fetus; this highlights the subtlety that tonifying the Kidney may be superior to tonifying the Spleen in certain contexts. Both approaches contain profound principles and should be applied after observing the clinical presentation. However, mental exhaustion, anger, and the fire of emotional desires can all cause miscarriage. Investigating the cause, it is due to Heat. Fire consumes matter, which is a natural law of creation. For women with habitual miscarriages, if they have poor appetite and disharmony of Middle Jiao Qi, one should not immediately nourish blood but first regulate the Spleen and Stomach, then administer Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). Only when the Spleen and Stomach are vigorous and dietary intake strong can Qi and Blood generate naturally.
The female Kidney system is connected to the fetus; it is the mother's true Qi, upon which the child relies for growth. After conception, one should maintain tranquility so that Qi and Blood remain harmonious. Internally, one must stay away from the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sadness, Fear, Fright); externally, one must moderate the Five Flavors. Foods that are extremely cold or hot are prohibited. Mist, dew, wind, and pathogenic evils must not take advantage of openings to enter. Sexual intercourse should be avoided to prevent stirring up desire-fire. Diet must be carefully regulated. If the Heart Qi suffers great fright, epilepsy may result; if Kidney Qi is insufficient, Jie Lu (delayed closure of fontanelles) may occur; if Spleen Qi is disharmonious, emaciation results; if Heart Qi is deficient, spiritual insufficiency manifests. The fetus relies on the mother's Qi, so caution is imperative. Unless there are symptoms such as fetal movement pain, fetal pain, diarrhea/dysentery, or external Wind-Cold pathogens, medication should not be administered lightly.
