Endowed with the warm qi of heaven and the pungent flavor of earth, its taste is pungent and its nature is warm, without toxicity; both its aroma and flavor are yang in nature and ascend.
Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) enters the Hand-Shaoyang (Triple Burner) meridian and the Foot-Jueyin (Liver) and Foot-Yinming (Stomach) meridians [Note: Text says 手足厥阴, typically Liver/Pericardium, but context implies Liver/Stomach pathways often associated with Chuanxiong in classical texts like Shanghan Lun, though strictly Jueyin is Liver/Heart. I will stick to literal translation of text: Foot-Jueyin]. It stops headaches originating from these meridians and should not be omitted for blood-deficiency headaches; it disperses various winds in the Liver meridian and is indispensable for treating wandering wind on the head and face. It is effective for all types of headaches caused by wind-stroke entering the brain, whether frontal or lateral. Its action ascends to the head and eyes and descends to the Blood Sea (Uterus); it is a herb that circulates Qi within the Blood of the Liver meridian. It treats various blood disorders, breaks up stagnant blood clots, nourishes new blood, and addresses epistaxis, hematemesis, hematuria, amenorrhea, and infertility in women. It treats various Qi disorders, drives out knotted Qi in the heart and abdomen, various accumulated Qi, hypochondriac pain, Qi-type hernia, sudden severe pain due to Qi attack by evil, and Qi masses; it expels pus, eliminates stasis, promotes flesh growth, and assists in treating surgical conditions; it warms the Middle Jiao, dries dampness, and dispels cold, specifically for excluding exogenous pathogens. When combined with Oyster Shell (Concha Ostreae), it treats headache-wind, vertigo, vomiting, and regurgitation; when combined with Asarum (Herba Asari), it treats pain and groaning from metal weapon injuries; when decocted with Rehmannia Root (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and wine, it arrests metrorrhagia and metrostaxis; when mixed with powder and taken with decoction of aged Mugwort (Folium Artemisiae Argyi), it tests for pregnancy. However, due to its pungent and dispersing nature, it is strictly contraindicated for long-term or single use, otherwise it may scatter true Qi and cause sudden death. Fuxiong (a variety of Chuanxiong) primarily opens depression and broadens the chest, reaches the Triple Burner directly, and acts as an agent to unblock Yin and Yang and Qi and Blood; as Qi ascends, depression naturally dissipates, which is why it is used in Yueju Wan.
Main Indications (Integrated Analysis with Smallpox/Rash Diseases): It assists clear Qi to benefit the head and eyes, expels pus, eliminates stasis, relieves tendon spasms and Spleen cold, resolves various depressions reaching the Triple Burner, and acts as an agent to unblock Yin and Yang and Qi and Blood. It guides Ginseng (Radix Ginseng) to tonify Original Yang; when combined with Angelica Sinensis (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), it treats Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, and Blood stagnation. It searches out Liver wind, moistens Liver dryness, warms the Middle and dispels cold, opens depression, moves Qi, and dries dampness—all functions indispensable. However, since its nature is warm, moving, and dispersing, it is temporarily used for ascending and guiding during the first seven days of disease onset. It is especially suitable if facial or cranial sores fail to erupt or cause itching. After the seventh day, it should be used sparingly, as the goal at this stage is to consolidate and one must avoid excessive dispersion. Furthermore, because its nature and flavor are penetrating and ascending, its efficacy is greater for the head and face. It is contraindicated in all blood disorders, lest it draw fire upward and consume Yin substances.
