[Golden Flower (Jinyinhua)]
Also known as Honeysuckle flower (Rendonghua), and alternatively called Egret Vine (Lusiteng). It absorbs the central qi of the earth and inherits the spring qi of heaven. Therefore, its taste is sweet, nature is slightly warm, and it is non-toxic.
Golden Flower (Jinyinhua) tonifies deficiency, treats wind pathogens, dissipates heat, and resolves toxins. For carbuncles and sores (Yongju, 痈疽) that have not yet formed, it can draw out toxins and disperse them; for those already formed, it can support the body's righteous qi to expel toxins and promote ulceration. It resolves bacterial toxins, eliminates carbuncle swellings, removes all wind syndromes and dampness, treats bloody dysentery and watery dysentery, and is indeed a precious treasure in external medicine. One may crush it to extract juice and drink it with wine in one go, or grind it into a paste and apply it thickly with wine. It is also said to treat five types of "Flying Corpse" (Wuzhong Feishi, 五种飞尸 - sudden acute conditions attributed to evil spirits) and drive away pain caused by "Ghost Strike" (Guiji, 鬼击). Long-term consumption lightens the body, prolongs life, resolves toxins, and harmonizes blood.
The flowers are superior in efficacy; they can be used in decoctions or pills to dispel wind and strengthen bones. The vines possess greater strength and are particularly suitable when steamed into wine.
Indications (Integration with Smallpox/Rash Diseases): Resolves various heat toxins; usable for smallpox/rashes where the color is red-purple indicating severe toxin accumulation. Eliminates swelling and pain from rash-related carbuncles; thus especially suitable for residual toxins after rash diseases. Also effective for scaly intestine and locked-mouth dysentery (Guachang Jinkou Liji, 刮肠噤口痢疾).
[Fritillaria (Beimu)]
In the earth, it obtains the qi of Earth and Metal; in the sky, it inherits the clear and肃 (descending/clearing) command of the season. Therefore, its taste is pungent and bitter, nature is slightly cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Pungency disperses nodules, bitterness drains pathogens, and coldness reduces heat; thus, it treats various conditions involving heat accumulation and phlegm accumulation. Select large, white bulbs, remove the heart, and use. For those with stomach cold, stir-fry with sticky rice until the rice is cooked, or stir-fry with ginger juice.
Fritillaria (Beimu), bitter flavor drains Heart Fire, pungent flavor disperses Lung stagnation, eliminates thick phlegm above the diaphragm, providing immediate relief for chronic cough; disperses rebellious qi in the heart, showing remarkable merit for those prone to melancholy and depression. It treats epidemic diseases, jaundice, hernia masses (Shanjia, 疝瘕), and throat obstruction (Houbi, 喉痹); clears qi and transforms phlegm, removes heat and resolves toxins; treats hematemesis and hemoptysis, lung atrophy (Feiwu, 肺痿), and lung abscess (Feiyong, 肺痈); disperses stagnation and promotes lactation, clears the heart and moistens the lungs; treats malignant sores and various toxins; essential for breast abscess (Ruyong, 乳痈) and goiter (Ying, 瘿); stops thirst and irritability due to heat; applying externally is effective for facial ulcers (Renmianchuang, 人面疮). It is a key herb for resolving nodules, removing heat, detoxifying, and transforming phlegm. For difficult labor with retained placenta, take Fritillaria powder and swallow with wine. However, it is contraindicated for those with stomach cold, spleen deficiency, retention of cold phlegm and fluids, headache due to phlegm syncope, nausea, and diarrhea.
Indications (Integration with Smallpox/Rash Diseases): Transforms phlegm and stops thirst, simultaneously resolves heat toxins, benefits the heart and lungs, dispels wind-heat, disperses heat from stagnation in the chest and heart, is excellent for post-rash carbuncle toxins, and can also be applied externally to malignant sores.
Note: Fritillaria's action specializes in entering the Lung meridian to treat dry phlegm. Long-term consumption is not favored by the Spleen. Common people, knowing that Pinellia (Banxia, 半夏) is drying and toxic, substitute it with Fritillaria, unaware that Fritillaria treats dry phlegm of Lung Metal. Since the Lung belongs to Dry Metal, it requires moistening. Pinellia treats damp phlegm of Spleen Earth; since the Spleen belongs to Wet Earth, it requires drying. One is moistening, the other is drying; the difference is vast, like heaven and earth. Misusing them causes significant harm; how can they be substituted! Large ones are called Earth Fritillaria (Tubemu, 土贝母); their great bitterness makes them cold-natured, possessing mostly functions of resolving toxins, transforming phlegm, dispersing stagnation, and removing heat. Small grains are Sichuan Fritillaria (Chuanbeimu, 川贝母); their slight bitterness reduces their cold nature. While their power to resolve toxins and clear heat is inferior, their ability to moisten the lungs and transform phlegm is superior.
