Indulging in lust, failing to cherish one's body, acting arrogantly and contrary to reason, and disregarding medical advice constitute the first category. Being trapped in hardship and confinement, lacking a carefree disposition, easily believing false words, and excessively seeking rapid cures constitute the second category. Resenting heaven, blaming others, generating widespread remorse, harboring excessive worry and envy, and behaving perversely in handling affairs constitute the third category. Worrying about tomorrow today, and calculating for a hundred years within a single year (excessive anxiety about the distant future) constitute the fourth category. Domestic noise and constant friction, merely demanding prescriptions, arbitrarily modifying them, and using adulterated or poor-quality herbs constitute the fifth category. Relying on prayers and rituals, engaging in extensive slaughter (for sacrifices), serving unreliable individuals, and failing to prepare pills correctly constitute the sixth category. Inappropriate sleeping and waking habits, unregulated diet, lack of diligent diagnosis and treatment, and mismatched medications constitute the seventh category. Concealing illness, fearing disease, blindly administering purgative or tonifying drugs, misunderstanding pharmacology, and changing doctors frequently constitute the eighth category. Overusing decoctions, which scourge the intestines and stomach (damaging the Spleen and Stomach), constitutes the ninth category. Viewing death as suffering and being unable to let go constitutes the tenth category.
Chun Ganyi stated: There are six conditions under which diseases are difficult to cure. Arrogance and disregard for reason is the first; valuing wealth over health is the second; inability to adapt to food and clothing needs is the third; instability of Yin-Yang and Zang-Fu Qi is the fourth; emaciation preventing medication intake is the fifth; trusting shamans but not physicians is the sixth. If any one of these six exists, the disease is difficult to treat. Furthermore, there are six errors: error in lack of prudence; error in lack of trust; error in missing the timing; error in choosing the wrong physician; error in failing to recognize the disease. If any one of these six errors occurs, the case is difficult to treat.
Improper diet damages the Pi-Wei (Spleen and Stomach); excessive labor dissipates Yuan-Qi (Primordial Qi); endless mental exertion injures Xin-Xue (Heart Blood); and excessive sexual activity depletes Shen-Shui (Kidney Water). These four faults are commonly committed by people. Even if wise individuals exercise caution, they cannot avoid injury entirely. Severe injury leads internally to Lao-Zhai (consumptive disease), from which various deficiency syndromes and myriad illnesses arise. If a skilled physician is not encountered, and harsh medicines are used to attack further, mild diseases become severe, and severe diseases become critical. How lamentable this is! Those who practice preventive regulation should take Baohe Taihe Wan (Preserve Harmony and Supreme Harmony Pill) at night to nourish Yuan-Qi. For deficiencies in Pi-Wei, strengthening Qi increases strength, enabling one to bear labor and perform tasks, assisting with fatigue without weariness, resisting cold and enduring hunger. In the morning, Kanli Jiji Wan (Kan and Li Both Complete Pill) should be taken to supplement damage to Xin-Xue and Shen-Shui. This adds essence to nourish Shen (Spirit), raises Water and descends Fire, expels disease and removes its root, prolongs life and benefits longevity. These are gentle, kingly-method formulas capable of achieving perfect results. Gentlemen who value hygiene and possess weak constitutions cannot do without them for a day.
