Medical texts sometimes write "Ni" (reverse flow), sometimes "Yue Qi" (ancient term for hiccups).
Hiccups (E Ni, 呃逆) may be caused by phlegm obstruction and qi stagnation, blood stasis, fire constraint, or gastric heat failing to be purged; these all belong to excess patterns. They may also be caused by severe deficiency of middle qi, or excessive purging leading to stomach deficiency with yin fire rushing upward; these all belong to deficiency patterns. However, Dai Fu'an stated: Heat-type hiccups occur only in Shanghan (Cold Damage); sudden onset in other diseases mostly belongs to cold patterns. Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction) is most effective. Hiccups originating in the Middle Jiao involve impaired transport of grain qi, producing short sounds, triggered immediately after eating. Hiccups originating in the Lower Jiao involve insufficiency of true qi, producing loud sounds, occurring even without eating. The treatment methods differ for cold, heat, deficiency, and excess patterns. In ancient times, treating Yin-pattern hiccups often involved using acrid-hot herbs such as Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝), Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 干姜), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), and Fennel Seed (Huixiang, 茴香), which were often effective. Treating Yang-pattern hiccups used Juhong Zhuru Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shaving Decoction). *Yuji Wei Yi* states: Hiccups originate from deficient yin qi and sudden hyperactivity of yang fire, rushing straight upward, emerging from the stomach, entering the lungs, and producing sound. Li Dongyuan used cooling herbs to purge heat and descend fire. If it is Yin-pattern hiccups, since yin qi is consumed first and yang fire is also exhausted, floating in the chest, it desires to dissipate. Therefore, cold herbs are not used; instead, warm herbs are used to nourish the stomach, harmonizing yang and stomach qi. When yang generates, yin grows. Generally, if coughing/hiccupping presents with a scattered pulse, it is untreatable. Postpartum hiccups are a malignant condition. Immediately moxa the Qimen point on the left side for males and right side for females, which is extremely effective. The Qimen point is located one finger-width below the nipple at the edge of black hair.
