Fei (Linghu, March) Due to fright and external pathogenic invasion, Liver Yang was agitated. Wood and Fire generated Phlegm. The combination of Phlegm and Fire obstructed and blocked the pericardium collaterals of the Liver and Gallbladder. The clear Qi was obscured by turbid pathogens. Mental agitation ensued, with consciousness alternating between clarity and confusion. This is colloquially known as "fright-induced dementia" (Xia Chi). Treatment should employ methods to Clear the Heart and wash away Phlegm, and to Pacify the Soul and Benefit Willpower.
Zidan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried with pig heart blood), Mudan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Canglong Chi (Cranii Draconis), Chendan Xing (Arisaema cum Bile, aged), Zhenxi Hupo (Succinum), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shijueming (Concha Meretricis, processed with 3 fen of Zhenchuan Lian), Yuanwu Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Xianzhuli (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, fresh juice), Xianchangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, fresh, 1 qian 5 fen, pounded together), Chuanyu Jin (Curcumae Radix), Jing Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen, purified), Zhu Fushen (Poria with Hostwood dyed with Cinnabar), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh), Juanxin Zhuye (Bambusae Folium, rolled heart).
Wang Zuo (November) The weather was warm and dry. The Yangming channel was affected, leading to the formation of Phlegm which transformed into Fire. These ascended to disturb the Lung and Stomach. Additionally, Liver Yang floated upward, failing to submerge, causing all energies to converge on the upper body. There was insomnia at night, accompanied by singing, crying, and anger, evolving into mania. The Classics state: "Double Yang leads to Mania" (Chong Yang Ze Kuang). Treatment should employ methods to Clear the Heart and expel Phlegm, and to Level the Liver and open orifices.
Xijiao Pan (Rhinocerotis Cornu, sliced), Jiukong Shijueming (Concha Meretricis, nine-hole variety), Zhenchuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 fen, mixed and raw-pounded), Chendan Xing (Arisaema cum Bile, aged), Xianglan (Olea europaea var. europaea fruit, fresh, mixed with 5 fen Mingfan), Mudan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Xianshengdi Zhi (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh juice), Baomu Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, thoroughly mixed with Chen Sha), Zhuli Xianchangpu (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam and Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, fresh, 1 qian 5 fen, pounded for juice and mixed), Shengtieluo (Ferrum), Canglong Chi (Cranii Draconis), Chuanyu Jin (Curcumae Radix).
Wang Zuo (February) Individuals who consume alcohol often have excessive Phlegm, caused by damp-heat steaming and fermenting. Prolonged illness often risks developing epilepsy and convulsions. Generally, Phlegm resides in the Yangming. Combined with ascending Liver-Gallbladder Yang, Phlegm stagnation causes disease with myriad variations. As Wang Yinjun stated... Current pulse diagnosis reveals a constitution of Six Yin pulses; deep pressure yields wiry and slippery qualities. The tongue edges are slightly crimson, while the center and rear are yellow and greasy. It is proposed to use Huanglian Wendan Tang (Coptis Decoction to Warm the Gallbladder). Whether this general approach is appropriate remains uncertain.
Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Huachenpi (Exocarpium Citri Grandis, processed), Quan Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus, whole), Xianshichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, fresh), Zhenchuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Song Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Song dynasty style), Haishi Fen (Ardisiae Granulum, powder), Chuanyu Jin (Curcumae Radix), Chao Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried), Zhu Fushen (Poria with Hostwood dyed with Cinnabar), Jiao Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, charred), Xianzhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, fresh juice).
Subsequently, the tongue is crimson, and the pulse is slippery and rapid. Suddenly, consciousness becomes unclear, with delirious speech and erratic movements, lacking mental direction. The eyes are red, and the malar region is flushed. There is no appetite, and bowel movements are absent. This indicates Phlegm-Fire-Wind pathology. The previously prescribed Huanglian Wendan method failed to achieve efficacy. The treatment principle for this condition must revolve around agents that Clear Fire, Expel Phlegm, Extinguish Wind, and Pacify the Spirit. We still follow yesterday's method but slightly increase the dosage to subdue the branch symptoms. Whether this is correct is submitted for your correction. Attached is the formula.
