Whenever one intends to perform acupuncture, one must carefully select the acupoints and understand the techniques of tonification (Bu) and sedation (Xie), as well as the methods of Ying (meeting) and Sui (following). The points on the chest and back differ between the left and right sides; the yin-yang attributes of respiration and the constitutions of men and women also vary. When qi needs to be regulated by needling between the two breasts, seek Taiyuan (LU-9); if there is no response, sedate Lieque (LU-7). Lieque treats headache and lateral or frontal headache; heavy sedation of Taiyuan (LU-9) yields no failure. For deafness and Qi stagnation with chest fullness (Qi Pi), needle Tinghui (GB-2), and sedate Yingxiang (LI-20) for miraculous effects. Who knows that Tiantu (CV-22) treats throat wind (Hou Feng), and for deficiency-type wheezing, one should seek Zusanli (ST-36). For severe pain in the shoulder and spine extending to the hand, needle Hegu (LI-4) while coordinating with Taichong (LR-3). Quchi (LI-11) treats dysfunction of both hands; when needling Hegu (LI-4), one must be meticulous. For heart pain accompanied by hand tremors, take Shaohai (HT-3); to eradicate the root cause, take Yinshi (ST-33). In cases of cold damage resulting in bilateral deafness, Jinmen (BL-63) and Tinghui (GB-2) act swiftly like the wind. For five types of elbow pain, seek Chize (LU-5); after needling Taiyuan (LU-9), the treatment concludes. For upper and lower limb disorders, needle Zusanli (ST-36); food retention and Qi masses are treated thereby. Jiutui (CV-15) treats five types of epilepsy. If Yongquan (KI-1) is needled, death can be avoided; for gastric accumulation, Xuanji (CV-15) is needled, and Zusanli (ST-36) has many merits, though few know this. Yinlingquan (SP-9) treats chest fullness; when needling reaches Chengshan (BL-57), appetite returns. If Dazhu (BL-11) is combined with Changqiang (GV-1) to treat Xiao Chang Qi pain, immediate relief follows. Weizhong (BL-40) specifically treats waist pain; for swelling of feet and knees, find Zhiyin (BL-67) according to the timing. For qi stagnation causing waist pain preventing standing, Henggu (KI-12) and Dadu (SP-13) serve as emergency measures. Qihai (CV-6) specifically treats the five types of Lin syndrome; additionally, needle Zusanli (ST-36) coordinated with respiration. Qimen (LR-14) mainly treats cold damage where six days have passed since the meridian transition without sweating; treat between Rupen (ST-24) and the hypochondrium. It also treats difficult labor in women. For tinnitus like cicadas, sensation of waist breaking, and knee issues, Zusanli (ST-36) is clearly preserved below the knee. If one can apply tonification and sedation at Wuhui (CV-13), do not easily reveal this to others. When Jingming (BL-1) fails to treat eye diseases, Hegu (LI-4) and Guangming (GB-37) are indispensable. Renzhong (GV-26) has the highest efficacy for treating disorders of the vertex; the Thirteen Ghost Points should not be overlooked. Shuizhong, Shuifen, and Qihai, with subcutaneous needling, naturally dissipate qi. For cold cough, first tonify Hegu (LI-4), then sedate Sanyinjiao (SP-6). For toothache, low back pain, and bi-syndrome of the throat, Erjian (LI-2) and Yangxi (LI-5) address the疾 (disease). Additionally, Sanjian (LI-3) and Shenshu (BL-23) excellently treat floating wind and lao (consumptive disease) of the shoulder and back. If needling Jianjing (GB-21), it must be coordinated with Zusanli (ST-36); when the condition is unpredictable and qi is unregulated, Yanglingquan (GB-34) is paramount. For knee pain, burn Weizhong (BL-40). For low back pain and leg spasms, obtaining blood from the affected meridian regulates it naturally. For foot pain and knee swelling, needle Zusanli (ST-36), Xuanzhong (GB-39), Erling (Yanglingquan GB-34 and Yinlingquan SP-9), Sanyinjiao (SP-6), and further use Taichong (LR-3) to guide qi. Numbness in fingers feels lighter; for muscle spasms and dizziness, needle Yufu (ST-34). Chengshan (BL-57) and Kunlun (BL-60) provide immediate relief. For abdominal pain, Gongsun (SP-4) is excellent, and Neiguan (PC-6) corresponds inevitably to cure. Cold wind and cold bi-syndromes are hard to cure; needle and burn Huantiao (GB-30) in the waist. Finding Fengfu (GV-16) and Fengchi (GB-20) eliminates hundred diseases of cold damage in an instant. On the second day of Yangming disease, seek Fengfu (GV-16); for vomiting, Shangwan (CV-13) is high. For women's heart pain, Xinluan (EX-HP-1) is indicated; for men's hernia, Zusanli (ST-36) is high. For involuntary urination, Guanyuan (CV-4) is good; for fecal impaction, burn Dadun (LR-1). For shin bone and leg pain, sedate Zusanli (ST-36); for qi stagnation leaving the waist, Fuliou (BL-80) is used. Fengfu (GV-16) has always been difficult to needle, requiring skill to gauge depth. If bladder qi is not dispersed, seek Zusanli (ST-36) again. For seven types of hernia with lower abdominal pain, needle Zhaohai (KI-6), Yinjiao (RN-7), and Ququan (LR-8). If still ineffective, seek Qihai (CV-6) and Guanyuan (CV-4) together for sedation with miraculous effects. For sudden pain of Xiao Chang Qi radiating to the navel, quickly sedate Yinjiao (RN-7) without delay. After a long time, take qi from Yongquan (KI-1); the mystery of this is known by few. For pediatric rectal prolapse lasting long, first moxa Baihui (GV-20), then Jiutui (CV-15). For chronic cold damage with shoulder and back pain, simply needle Zhongzhu (TE-3) appropriately. For shoulder pain radiating to the navel without cessation, seek Zusanli (ST-36) in the hand. Upon needling, if numbness and heaviness occur, sedation is required; upon obtaining Deqi, leave the needle in place. For urgent pain connecting waist and hip with difficulty in defecation, attack the obstruction with Zusanli (ST-36). Use one sedation and three tonifications to direct qi upward against choking; if choking persists, moxa Qihai (CV-6) and immediately sedate for rapid recovery. Tonification turns the needle towards Mao South (clockwise/eastward), avoiding fatigue in sedation which turns towards Mao North (counter-clockwise/westward). To force qi out during sedation, require inhalation; for right-side tonification, follow exhalation to self-regulate. Twisting the needle left and right seeks Zi-Wu (midnight-noon); withdrawing the needle allows qi to travel far. Clearly state the tonification and sedation techniques, and search for the root and branch. For acute throat emergencies, first use Baihui (GV-20), Taichong (LR-3), Qihai (CV-6), and Yinjiao (RN-7). Students must study these diligently; Xi Hong was most famous for treating diseases.
