The *Huoren Shu* (Book of Living Persons) states: When the whole body aches, fever is present with yellowing of the skin, urination is difficult, and the stool is loose, this is termed "Zhong Shi" (Middle Wetness). Wind and rain invade the deficiency of the body, and vapors from mountains and marshes steam; people easily contract dampness. When dampness remains in the joints, it inevitably causes bodily restlessness and pain, with a deep and slow pulse, indicating internal contraction of dampness. The main symptoms are whole-body pain, fever, yellowing of the body, and difficulty in urination. It further states: If cold-dampness remains in the exterior and cannot be resolved, purgation is contraindicated; instead, Zhufu Tang (Atractylodes and Aconite Decoction) should be used to treat it. Liu Shouzhen stated: Yellowing results from extreme heat in the Yangming interior, causing vexation, thirst, and heat stagnation. When retained fluids fail to dissipate, dampness and heat contend with each other, leading to yellowing of the body. Some say that cold-dampness contending also causes yellowing, referring to a dull complexion and white greasy tongue coating. This may originate from Taiyang disease where purgation was neglected, or due to erroneous use of sweating, warming, moxibustion, or hot compress therapies. Alternatively, taking highly toxic and hot medicines like Silver Powder (Yinfen) or Croton Seed (Badou) for purgation may deplete fluids and damage Yin qi, causing pathogenic heat to intensify. Or, if purgation is performed too early, heat enters but does not form a Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) syndrome, resulting only in yellowing. Or, if there is a failure in using cooling treatments, or if the heat pathogen is inherently severe, even correct treatment fails to reduce the intense heat. Or, if heat persists after purgation, all these scenarios lead to yellowing. Generally, if the root cause is extreme heat stagnation with retained fluids and contention between dampness and heat, using Zhufu Tang would be a mistake. The *Suwen: Pingren Qixiang Lun* (Plain Questions: Normal People's Qi and Pulse Manifestations) states: Feeling hungry as soon as eating is finished indicates Wei Dan (Stomach Jaundice), which signifies Stomach Heat. Heat consumes grain rapidly, so one feels hungry after eating. Yellowing of the eyes occurs because Yang Qi is constrained above, and heat accumulates in the chest, causing Yang Qi to flare upward, thus yellowing the eyes. The *Suwen: Tongping Xuushi Lun* (Plain Questions: Discussing Deficiency and Excess Uniformly) states: The three Yang meridians of the foot run from head to foot. However, if long-term Jue Ni (Cold Reversal) prevents Qi from descending, causing stagnation in the Upper Jiao, it leads to Huang Dan (Jaundice).
The *Huoren Shu* states: After purgation followed by re-sweating, if the patient experiences restlessness and insomnia during the day but quietness at night, without vomiting, thirst, or exterior signs, and presents with a deep and faint pulse without profuse sweating, Ganjiang Fuzi Tang (Dried Ginger and Aconite Decoction) should be used. Liu Shouzhen stated: In Taiyang disease, when the patient feels profound mental discomfort and vexation, tossing and turning unable to sleep, it is due to dry-heat constrained internally, preventing the free circulation of Qi and Body Fluids; Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) should be used. The *Suwen: Cire Pian* (Plain Questions: Acupuncture for Heat) states: When Liver Heat is severe, urine turns yellow first, accompanied by abdominal pain, excessive sleeping, and body heat. When heat contends with healthy Qi, delirium and惊悸 (startle/fright) occur, along with hypochondriac fullness and pain, restlessness of hands and feet, and inability to lie down peacefully.
