Water qi disease, where kidney deficiency causes spleen qi to ascend in rebellion: for deficiency patterns, use Sibai Tang (Four Whites Decoction), Qinjiao Yinzi (Gentian Liqueur), or Xiaotusizi Wan (Small Dodder Seed Pill); for heat patterns, use Gu Fanxiao San (Ancient Alum and Niter Powder) or Zishen Wan (Nourish Kidney Pill).
Yin meridian vomiting accompanied by yang heat or cold.
Various types of jaundice: if originating from the yin meridians, vomiting is inevitable; treat with Xiaobanxia Tang (Minor Pinellia Decoction). If originating from the yang meridians, aversion to cold and fever are present; treat with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus).
Consumptive disease manifests as a bland taste in the mouth and weakness/softness in the legs.
Internal deficiency leading to yellowing of the skin, accompanied by a bland taste, palpitations (Zhen Tong), tinnitus, leg weakness, slight aversion to cold and fever, and turbid urine. For qi deficiency, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction); for blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) combined with Siling San (Four Powders Powder) plus Yincheng (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) and Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix); for combined qi and blood deficiency, use Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Vigor Decoction) or Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). If yellowing arises from middle-jiao cold due to irregular diet or overexertion, use Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Building the Middle Decoction) or Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction); if due to food stagnation, use Erchen Tang (Two Aged Substances Decoction) plus Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus).
Exogenous blood stasis is detailed in Treatise on Cold Damage.
Generally, seasonal colds, lingering summerheat toxins, internal accumulation of heat, and undigested food can all lead to jaundice. In summary: jaundice from epidemic malaria/dysentery uses Zhangdan Wan (Miasma Jaundice Pill). Wind pattern: yellow complexion with a bluish tint, treated with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Yincheng (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba). Cold pattern: yellow complexion with a dark hue, treated with Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) plus Yincheng (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). For those without sweat, use Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 3 qian, decocted in wine and taken warm to induce sweating. Summerheat-dampness pattern: yellow complexion with a reddish tint, treated with Wuling San (Five Ling Powder) plus Yincheng (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), which is most excellent. Blood stasis jaundice: characterized by mania and forgetfulness, black stool; see Treatise on Cold Damage.
Treatment must distinguish between exterior and interior; the method of promoting urination (leaching out dampness) is subtle and effective.
