From this, we can see that the meridians (Jingluo), zang-fu organs (Zangfu), pulse and diseases (Maibing), as well as herbal treatments (Yaozhi), are all governed by the theory of Five Movements and Six Qi (Yunqi). This applies not only to a whole year, but even within a brief moment of time or an instant, the Qi of the Five Elements (Wuxing) is invariably present. It concerns not just specific objects, but even in the finest hair or芒 (máng, awn/husk), the transformation of the Five Elements is invariably carried. Reaching up to Heaven, there are corresponding responses in the waxing and waning of the five planets; pushing down to Earth, there are verifications in the growth of grasses and trees and the breeding of insects.
Alas, vulgar physicians who do not know the source of medicine completely fail to understand what Yunqi is; those who do not grasp the variability of medicine rigidly adhere to temporal restrictions and fixed prescriptions, thereby harming patients. In essence, there is Yunqi in Heaven (natural climate cycles) and Yunqi in humans (individual constitution and pathology). If the influence of Heavenly timing (abnormal climate) outweighs human disease, one should abandon treating the human disease per se and instead follow the Heavenly timing; if human disease outweighs Heavenly timing, one should abandon following Heavenly timing and instead treat the human disease. Zhang Zihe said: "If the illness does not correspond to the current year's Qi, look for which year's Yunqi it resembles; seek the living method from that year, and you will know it all lies within the 'Zhizhen Yao Da Lun' (Treatise on the Most Genuine Principles)." Bian Que said: "Excessive Yin leads to cold diseases (i.e., excessive command of Taiyang Cold Water); Excessive Yang leads to heat diseases (i.e., excessive command of Ministerial Fire); Excessive Wind leads to diseases of the extremities (i.e., excessive Wood command); Excessive Rain/Dampness leads to abdominal diseases (i.e., excessive Dampness command); Obscurity/Aridity leads to confused diseases (i.e., excessive Dryness command, long dry spells without rain, leading to epidemics, wind-bi); Excessive Brightness/Fire leads to heart diseases (i.e., excessive command of Sovereign Fire)."
The Classics state: "First ascertain the annual Qi, do not violate the Harmony of Heaven." It also states: "One who does not know the annual stem-branch additions and the flourishing or declining states of Qi cannot be considered a skilled physician." Students should observe these comprehensively and refine their understanding of pulses and syndromes to attain true knowledge themselves. Alas! The Way of Confucianism lies in breadth and simplicity; the Way of Medicine lies in Yunqi. How can students fail to enter through this door to explore its profound mysteries?
"Jing" (Meridian) means path. Straight paths are called Jing; branches diverging from the Jing are called Luo (Collaterals). There are twelve defined pathways, yet they essentially originate from one pulse system. A physician who does not understand the meridians is like a person walking at night without a candle; practitioners must master them thoroughly.
