Diseases caused by the Six Qi, namely Wind, Heat, Dampness, Fire, Dryness, and Cold, are the Six Qi of Heaven (Nature).
Wind-Wood corresponds to the Jueyin (Terminal Yin) channel, which is the Qi of the Liver and Gallbladder.
Various sudden occurrences of limb rigidity, supportive pain, tendon twisting and deviation, abdominal urgency, and tendon shortening all belong to Wind.
The annotation states: "Bao" (Sudden/Violent) means abrupt or severely harmful. It refers to being strong and powerful without softness. "Zhi" (Straight) refers to tendons being strong and stiff.
The annotation states: "Zhi tong" (Supportive pain), "Zhi" means to support, firmly holding up, causing pain due to tendon spasms that are not flexible. "Suo" means contraction; "Li" means deviant or contrary, referring to tendon shortening and abdominal urgency, where illness arises from deviation and loss of normal function. However, Metal-Dryness governs tightening, contraction, and sharp cutting, yet when Wind-Wood causes disease, it manifests the transformation of Metal-Dryness. This is because "excess leads to harm, and control follows." Moreover, Wind can generate Dampness and transform into Dryness; tendon shortening is a severe manifestation of Dryness, hence it is said that severe Wind often combines with Dryness.
Heat refers to the heat of Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) Sovereign Fire, which is the Qi of the Heart and Small Intestine.
[Various diseases such as panting, vomiting, regurgitation of sour fluid, acute diarrhea with tenesmus, muscle cramps, turbid urine, abdominal distension large and resonant upon percussion, carbuncles, sores, ulcers, rashes, tumors, scrofula, tuberculosis, vomiting and diarrhea cholera, mental confusion and depression with swelling, nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, epistaxis, hematemesis or hematochezia, strangury with body heat, aversion to cold and shivering, fright, confusion, sadness, laughter, delirium, nosebleeds, and bloody discharges all belong to Heat.]
The annotation states: Panting occurs because Heat causes rapid breathing and coarse breath, thus during Heat conditions, the pulse is full and extremely rapid, which is the image of panting.
The annotation states: This is the image of Fire Qi flaming upward; therefore, when Stomach (Diaphragm) Heat is severe, vomiting occurs.
The annotation states: Sourness is the flavor of Liver-Wood. Because excessive Fire controls Lung-Metal, failing to subdue Liver-Wood, Liver-Wood becomes hyperactive, thus producing sourness. The treatment principle should employ moistening herbs to dissipate it, which is also similar in meaning to releasing the exterior. This opens up stagnation in the intestines and stomach, disperses constrained Heat, and harmonizes. If one has a long-term preference for sour taste that does not cease, warming herbs should not be used; instead, cold herbs should be used to purge, followed by cooling herbs to regulate. Once stagnation is scattered and Heat is removed, Qi will be harmonized.
