Angelicae Radix (Danggui), White Peony Root (Baishao) (each 1.5 qian), Oyster Shell (Muli, red variety, 1 qian), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 2 qian), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 0.5 qian), Dragon Bone (Longgu, red variety, 0.4 qian), Black Prepared Aconite Root (Hei Fuzi, processed, skin and umbilicus removed, 0.5 qian).
The above herbs are ground into fine powder. Take two liang of mutton meat, two cun of white part of scallion, add two bowls of water, boil until the volume is reduced by half, filter through cloth and squeeze out the juice, take warm.
When a woman suffers from Cold Damage (Shanghan) and her menstrual period is just beginning or has just ended, pathogenic factors invade the Blood Sea (Xuehai, referring to the uterus and liver meridian blood level) due to deficiency, resulting in clear consciousness during the day but delirium at night, as if seeing ghosts. This is called Heat Entering the Blood Chamber (Re Ru Xue Shi). The treatment principle is not to damage the Stomach Qi (Wei Qi) and not to attack the Upper and Middle Jiao (Sanjiao); the disease will heal itself. It is appropriate to use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), remove Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), and add Taoren (Peach Kernel), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root, raw), and Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark) as the main treatment.
Extreme Yin may manifest as restlessness. Restlessness in Yang syndromes of Cold Damage must be accompanied by thirst, constipation, or diarrhea with intestinal mucus, or delirious speech, and the pulse must be deep, full, and forceful. If Cold directly invades the Yin meridians, there should be no restlessness; if restlessness occurs now, it is due to the reversal at the extreme, where extreme Water resembles Fire. Symptoms include dry mouth and thirst, desire to drink but inability to swallow, desire to sit or lie in mud or water, and the pulse must be deep, slow, and weak. This is named Yin Restlessness (Yin Zao, false heat syndrome), and warm agents are appropriate. If mistakenly treated as Yang restlessness with cooling methods, the error would be severe.
Yang Jue (Heat Jue) refers to cold limbs caused by extreme heat. Direct invasion of Cold pathogens causes cold limbs initially; however, when transmitted Heat syndromes also cause cold limbs, it is due to the reversal at the extreme, where extreme Fire resembles Water. As stated in medical texts: "The deeper the heat, the deeper the jue; the slighter the heat, the slighter the jue." However, Cold Jue appears immediately upon onset, whereas Heat Jue develops gradually, which is significantly different.
There are three types of edema: When Wind-Dampness combats in the Taiyang stage causing slight body swelling, dispersing Wind and removing Dampness is appropriate. When Wind-Heat affects the Yangming stage causing swelling around the ears, acupuncture is appropriate. After recovery from a major disease, if swelling occurs below the waist, promoting urination is appropriate.
In Cold Damage, after six or seven days, if the pulse is slow, it indicates Cold. If the physician fails to observe this and instead uses cold-natured drugs to reduce heat, the abdomen should become cold and unable to digest food. If the patient suddenly can eat, this is called Chu Zhong (Elimination of the Middle, a sign of impending death due to exhaustion of Spleen and Stomach Qi). "Chu Zhong" implies that eating leads to the elimination of life. It is difficult to treat. Try feeding the patient plain wheat cakes (Su Bing). If fever follows consumption, it is Chu Zhong; if no fever follows, it is not Chu Zhong.
