Realgar (ground) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Chuan Dang Gui, 当归, stir-fried, 7.5 qian each) Areca Seed (Bing Lang, 槟榔, 5 qian) Aloe (ground) Moschus (She Xiang, 麝香, ground, 2.5 qian each)
Crush and grind the above ingredients into powder, use cooked wheat flour paste as a binder to make pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, swallow with gruel broth, three times daily.
Extreme heat, extreme cold, reaching the peak without further addition. Yang toxicity manifests as yellowish rashes on the skin and maniacal confusion; Yin toxicity manifests as cold extremities, diarrhea with undigested food, and body pain as if beaten by a stick. Both Yang and Yin toxicities often accompany sore throat; each should be treated according to the specific syndrome. Generally, it is treatable within five days; beyond this, it may be difficult to effect a cure. For Yang toxicity, Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction) added with Ren Zhong Huang (Human Excrement Charcoal) is the primary treatment. For Yin toxicity, Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) added with Cong Bai (Scallion White) is the primary treatment.
Treatment for Yang Toxicity:
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Sheng Ma, 升麻) Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin, 黄芩) Prunus Armeniaca Semen (Xing Ren, 杏仁) Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 石膏, 2 qian each) Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi, 栀子) Paeoniae Rubra Radix (Chi Shao, 赤芍) Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu, 知母) Isatidis Folium (Da Qing, 大青, 1 qian each) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 甘草, 0.5 qian) Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu, 柴胡, 1.5 qian) Fermented Soybean (Dou Chi, 豆豉, 100 grains)
Decoct in water and take orally. Adding 1 qian of Ren Zhong Huang (Human Excrement Charcoal) yields even better results.
When walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, the patient feels as if possessed by spirits, remaining silent and unhappy in spirit; this is called Bai He Bing (Lily Disease). Bai He Zhi Mu Tang (Lily and Anemarrhena Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Bulbus Lilii (Bai He, 百合, one bulb) Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu, 知母, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
If the original Tai Yang disease (disease of the Tai Yang channel) remains unresolved after treatment with sweating, vomiting, purging, or warm needle therapy, this is termed Huai Bing (Ruined Disease/Complicated Disease). Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is no longer appropriate. One must determine what error was committed and treat according to the current syndrome. Note: "Ni" (adverse/rebellious) refers to improper treatment methods. "Treating according to the syndrome" means using specific herbs to rescue the patient based on the presenting symptoms. Ancient texts suggest treating all cases with Lamb Soup, which is likely not entirely accurate. This is a formula for fasting periods; regardless of whether it is Yin or Yang syndrome, or due to medication errors causing the patient to become critically ill, it can be taken after seven days. It is said that among a thousand uses, none fail. Select high-quality Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), 1 liang, remove the rhizome (Lu), slice thinly, decoct in one sheng of water in a silver or ceramic vessel until reduced to one zhan, cool it in newly drawn cold water, and take as a single dose. The sign of efficacy is sweat appearing only as droplets on the tip of the nose, rather than flowing from other parts of the body. I have used this formula and it has proven effective repeatedly.
