After the treatment of sweating for Taiyang disease (Taiyang illness), if one is subsequently affected by wind, resulting in burning heat throughout the body, it is named Wind-Warmth (Fengwen). In cases of Wind-Warmth, the pulse is floating at both the Yin and Yang positions; symptoms include spontaneous sweating, heaviness of the body, excessive sleepiness, snoring during respiration, and difficulty in speech. It should be treated with Weirui Decoction (Weirui Tang).
Damp-Warmth (Shiwen) occurs when a person has been previously injured by dampness and subsequently suffers from summerheat, a condition named Damp-Warmth. Symptoms include coldness reversing upwards in both calves, chest fullness, headache and eye pain, delirious speech, and profuse sweating. The pulse is floating at the Yang position but small at the Yin position. Sweating methods must be strictly avoided; inducing sweat will lead to severe complications and is difficult to treat. It should be treated with Cangzhu Baitu Decoction (Cangzhu Baitu Tang).
If Taiyang disease persists for eight or nine days, and wind and dampness contend with each other, causing severe bodily pain such that the patient cannot turn over independently, without vomiting or thirst, and with a pulse that is deficient, floating, and choppy, Guizhi Fuzi Decoction (Guizhi Fuzi Tang) should be used. Because this syndrome presents with a deficient, floating, and choppy pulse and no thirst, this formula is appropriate. However, if accompanied by thirst, this formula must not be used.
After a major illness, physical exertion is inadvisable. If fatigue damages Qi, leading to weakness and lack of spirit, it is called Labor Recurrence (Laofu), treated with Buzhong Yiqi Decoction (Buzhong Yiqi Tang). If spleen injury results from improper diet, it is called Food Recurrence (Shifu); one should regulate stomach Qi to resolve food stagnation, treated with Zhishi Zhizi Chi Decoction (Zhishi Zhizi Chi Tang). If sexual intercourse occurs after recovery, causing recurrence, it is called Female Labor Recurrence (Nulaofu). Symptoms include heavy head unable to lift, visual hallucinations (seeing flowers before eyes), backache, and urgent, colicky pain in the lower abdomen. It is treated with Renshen Sanbai Decoction (Renshen Sanbai Tang).
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 2 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Baifuling (Poria, 1.5 qian each), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 0.5 qian), Fuzii (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, processed, 1 qian), Zao (Fructus Jujubae, 2 pieces). Decoct in water and take orally.
When a man newly recovered from illness engages in sexual intercourse with a woman, his pathogenic factor may transmit to her; similarly, if a newly recovered woman engages with a man, her pathogen may transmit to him. This is named Yin-Yang Exchange (Yinyangyi). Symptoms include a heavy head unable to lift, visual disturbances, backache, and urgent, colicky pain in the lower abdomen, resembling the syndrome of Female Labor Recurrence. In rare cases where the tongue protrudes several inches, it indicates a critical danger. It is treated with Renshen Sanbai Decoction (Renshen Sanbai Tang).
A state of indecision and suspicion indicates internal heat generating parasites. Sores on the upper lip indicate parasites eroding the Lung, named Huo (Confusion); sores on the lower lip indicate parasites eroding the anus, named Hu (Fox). It is treated with Xionghuang Pill (Xionghuang Wan).
