Insomnia (Bu Mei) presents with various syndromes. Some cases involve deficiency heat and vexation due to overwork, resulting in inability to sleep; this is caused by dampness of the Spleen Earth and rebellious Stomach Qi, with ministerial fire floating upward, disturbing the Hun and Shen spirits, thereby preventing peace. It is treated primarily with Suanzaoren Tang (Sour Jujube Seed Decoction). Furthermore, Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) travels through the Yang aspects during the day and the Yin aspects at night, governing the opening and closing of day and night. Currently, if there is rebellious Qi lodging in the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, it resists Wei Qi, keeping it outside and causing it to travel only through the Yang aspects without entering the Yin aspects; thus, the eyes cannot close for sleep. This is treated primarily with Banxia Shumi Tang (Pinellia and Millet Decoction). In other cases, Water Qi stagnates in the chest, condensing into damp obstruction, which then encroaches upon the "Palace City" (the Heart), disturbing the Heart Shen and causing insomnia. This is treated primarily with Xiaobanxia Ji Fuling Tang (Minor Pinellia Formula plus Poria).
Suanzaoren Tang (Sour Jujube Seed Decoction)
Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 8 qian, raw, not ground) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 qian) Fuling (Poria, 3 qian) Xiong [Chuanxiong] (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 qian)
Use three cups of water. First decoct Suanzaoren until two cups remain. Add the remaining herbs and decoct again until eight-tenths full. Take warm.
Banxia Shumi Tang (Pinellia and Millet Decoction)
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 5 qian) Shumi (Milii Indicae Semen, one tea cup)
Use long-flowing water that has been stirred hundreds of times. Decoct until slightly more than half a cup remains. Take warm.
Xiaobanxia Ji Fuling Tang (Minor Pinellia Formula plus Poria)
(See formula under "Wheezing and Shortness of Breath")
Zhengchong (Palpitations) refers to a sensation of beating and unease in the epigastric region. It belongs to the category of Jingji (Fright Palpitations). It arises from dampness of the Spleen Earth and stagnation of Liver Wood, with ministerial fire floating upward, forcing and disturbing the Palace City (Heart), leading to agitation and unrest of the Heart Shen. It is treated primarily with Jinding Tang (Golden Tripod Decoction). If Zhengchong is caused by Water Qi overwhelming the Heart, treat primarily with Xiaobanxia Ji Fuling Tang (Minor Pinellia Formula plus Poria). For severe cases, treat primarily with Guizhi Fuling Dazao Gancao Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Poria, Jujube, and Licorice Decoction). For even more severe cases, treat primarily with Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction). If Zhengchong is caused by Ben Tun (Rushing Pig) syndrome, seek treatment formulas from the Ben Tun section.

Take water and stir it three hundred times, naming it Ganlan Shui (Sweet Ripple Water). Use three cups. First decoct Fuling until two cups remain. Add the remaining herbs and decoct until seven-tenths full. Take warm.
