[Outline of Cold Epidemic]
Pathogenic factors close the skin and hair, this disease belongs to cold-type epidemics; body aches and absence of sweat make the patient always uneasy. When the pathogen is still in the exterior, it is suitable to use warming and dispersing methods; if the pathogen enters the interior, yin and yang patterns must be carefully differentiated.
[Taiyang Meridian]
Zisu Tang (Perilla Decoction)
(Condition Note) When cold epidemic initially transmits to the Taiyang meridian, aversion to cold and fever require careful examination. If accompanied by headache, what method should be used? Employ Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Zisu Ye (Perillae Folium), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) combined with Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Zisu Dihuang Condition
Taiyang cold epidemic transmits from external pathogens; blood heat exists, but epistaxis has not yet occurred. Symptoms include nasal dryness, dry mouth, and floating pulse. It is appropriate to first clear the interior heat; this is the true principle.
Zisu Dihuang Tang (Perilla and Rehmannia Decoction)
Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) combined with Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus). It releases the exterior and clears internal heat simultaneously; for patients who have not yet experienced epistaxis, preemptive treatment is indicated.
Sugui Jiangxin Condition
Cold epidemic remains in the Taiyang meridian; external pathogens are unresolved, requiring detailed differentiation. Internal retention of fluid requires specific methods; treating both exterior and interior is the excellent prescription.
Sugui Jiangxin Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Perilla, Ginger, and Asarum Decoction)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Zisu Ye (Perillae Folium) combined with Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) benefit qi and nourish the nutritive level. Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) can descend rebellious qi; this is a specialized formula for exterior cold and interior fluid retention.
Baitu Jia Yuanmai Tang (White Tiger Decoction plus Ophiopogon and Wheat)
(See "Warm Epidemic" section; pathology and treatment are identical to warm epidemics.) Renshen Baitu Jia Yuanmai Tang (Same as above).
[Yangming Meridian]
Zisu Gegen Shengma Tang (Perilla, Pueraria, and Cimicifuga Decoction)
(Condition Note) Disease enters Yangming meridian with added diarrhea. The formula uses Zisu (Perillae Folium), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) together with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); adding Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) achieves comprehensive internal and external treatment with remarkable efficacy.
Suye Gegen Banxia Tang (Perilla Leaf, Pueraria, and Pinellia Decoction)
(Condition Note) Yangming vomiting with empty stomach contents. Boil Suye (Perillae Folium) and combine with Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix); add Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). The formulation is miraculous and hard to describe.
Tiaowei Chengqi Jia Maidong Yuanshen Tang (Regulate the Stomach Da-Cheng-Qi Decoction plus Ophiopogon and Scrophularia)
(The above three formulas appear in "Warm Epidemic" conditions and treatments, which are identical.)
Xiao Chengqi Jia Maidong Yuanshen Tang (Minor Da-Cheng-Qi Decoction plus Ophiopogon and Scrophularia)
Da Chengqi Jia Maidong Yuanshen Tang (Major Da-Cheng-Qi Decoction plus Ophiopogon and Scrophularia)
[Shaoyang Meridian]
Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction)
(See "Cold Damage" section; condition and treatment are identical to warm epidemics.)
Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction)
(Condition Note) Shaoyang diarrhea occurs at the initial stage; chest and hypochondriac palpitations and fullness arise. Zao (Jujubae Fructus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are applicable; specifically removes heat-type diarrhea with refined methodology.
Huangqin Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Scutellaria, Pinellia, and Fresh Ginger Decoction)
(Condition Note) Shaoyang vomiting is severe and difficult to bear; chest and hypochondriac fullness persists. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) combined with Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) is necessary; Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zao (Jujubae Fructus), and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) are administered together.
Da Chaihu Condition
(See "Cold Damage" section) Shaoyang cold epidemic is not cured; pathogenic factors have transmitted to the stomach fu-organ. Both exterior and interior manifestations are excess patterns; combining purgation and dispersal methods is essential.
Chaihu Guizhi Ganjiang Tang (Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig, and Dried Ginger Decoction)
(Condition Note) Shaoyang disease is about to enter the Taiyin palace; diarrhea is accompanied by chest fullness and attacking pain. Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Muli (Concha Ostreae), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) treat the interior; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) release the exterior; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) harmonizes the middle.
Chaihu Guijiang Banxia Tang (Bupleurum, Cinnamon, Ginger, and Pinellia Decoction)
(Condition Note) Taiyin disease is deepening; vomiting is relentless, and chest/hypochondriac fullness remains. Use Sheng Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Muli (Concha Ostreae); Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) combined with Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus).
[Taiyin Meridian]
Lingshen Nongpu Tang (Poria, Ginseng, and Magnolia Bark Decoction)
(Condition Note) Cold epidemic transmits to Taiyin meridian; abdominal fullness indicates deeper disease. Treatment should employ Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), along with Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Lingshen Jiaofu Tang (Poria, Ginseng, Zanthoxylum, and Aconite Decoction)
(Condition Note) Cold epidemic rapidly causes palpitations entering Taiyin; abdominal pain is often unbearable. Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jingmi (Oryzae Fructus Glutinosa Preparatus) are all suitable; Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma).
Lingshen Banxia Tang (Poria and Pinellia Decoction)
(Condition Note) What formula for Taiyin vomiting? None other than Lingshen Banxia Tang; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) harmonizes the middle; driving out cold and descending rebellion relies on Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Fuling Sini Jia Shizhi Tang (Poria Si-Ni Decoction plus Kaolin/Hematite)
(Condition Note) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) combined with Shizhi (Kaolinite or Hematite); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) are favorably combined. Taiyin diarrhea can be treated; supplementing True Yang yields extraordinary effects.
[Shaoyin Meridian]
Fuling Sini Jia Banxia Tang (Poria Si-Ni Decoction plus Pinellia)
(Condition Note) Shaoyin vomiting and diarrhea with generation of cold limbs; Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) restore Yang concurrently. Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) descends rebellious Qi; Fuling (Poria) removes dampness; Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) boost Qi and tonify Spleen essence.
[Jueyin Meridian]
Fuling Shen Gan Jiang Fu Gui Zhi Tang (Poria, Ginseng, Licorice, Ginger, Aconite, Angelica, and Kaolin Decoction)
(Condition Note) In critical Jueyin cold limbs and diarrhea, Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) restore Yang assisting Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) tonify the middle; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) nourishes Blood; Fuling (Poria) and Shizhi (Kaolinite or Hematite) consolidate intestines and support Stomach.
Shen Gan Gui Shao Maidong Gualou Tang (Ginseng, Licorice, Angelica, Peony, Ophiopogon, and Trichosanthes Decoction)
(Condition Note) When Jueyin thirst and heat arise, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) nourish Yin effectively; Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) clear pathogenic factors with rapid action; Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) assist Qi with peculiar efficacy.
