Jing disease (Spasm) is caused by the loss of body fluids and blood due to excessive sweating, followed by contraction of wind-cold pathogens. The symptoms include fever in the body but coldness in the feet, stiffness and tension in the neck and nape, aversion to cold with simultaneous heat in the head, redness of the face and eyes, shaking of the head, lockjaw (trismus), and opisthotonos (backward arching of the back). These are all caused by wind-cold invading the Taiyang Channel (Taiyang Meridian) when the body's defensive qi is deficient. The Taiyang Channel governs Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi). When wind-cold damages the human body, Ying and Wei are distinctly affected. If there is fever with sweating and no aversion to cold, it is named Rou Jing (Soft Spasm), which results from wind damaging the Wei Qi. If there is fever without sweating and with aversion to cold, it is named Gang Jing (Hard Spasm), which results from cold damaging the Ying Qi. In cases of Taiyang disease where all symptoms are present, the body is stiff and rigid, exhibiting a specific posture of rigidity, and the pulse is surprisingly deep and slow, this constitutes Rou Jing, which is primarily treated with Gualou Guizhi Tang (Trichosanthes Root and Cinnamon Twig Decoction). In cases of Taiyang disease with no sweating, accompanied by scanty urination, sensation of qi rushing up to the chest, lockjaw preventing speech, and impending onset of Gang Jing, Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) is primarily used. If there is chest fullness, lockjaw, inability to lie flat with the back touching the bed, cramping and flexion of the legs, and inevitable teeth grinding, Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) may be administered. For women postpartum or men suffering from metal wounds (traumatic injuries from sharp objects) who develop spasm due to excessive blood loss, Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Sinensis Blood-Nourishing Decoction) combined with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) should be used.
