Wu Ying (Five Stiffnesses): The infant's head is tilted backward, breathing is rapid and difficult, and body movement is restricted. Qi stagnation causes pain radiating to the chest and abdomen; the palms of the hands and soles of the feet are cold and stiff. A backward-tilted head indicates a severe wind-pathogen condition with a poor prognosis, making recovery difficult. Inadequate nutrition prevents muscle growth; emaciation and loose skin occur. If diarrhea or dysentery develops at this stage, even miraculous medicines cannot save the life. A five-year-old child who refuses to walk suffers from weak legs and depleted Qi. Although the pulse may be fine, the Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive) Qi remain intact, and muscles will naturally develop as the child grows. Treatment should involve herbs such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix), or Qianyi's Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill).
The aforementioned "Wu Ying" belongs to the category of Jing Bing (Spasm Disease), as stated in the *Classic of Internal Medicine*: "Sudden onset of stiffness and rigidity all belong to Wind."
Wu Ruan (Five Softnesses) belongs to the category of Wei Bing (Flaccidity Syndrome); treatment methods can be found under the section for Gan Ji (Childhood Malnutrition) miscellaneous formulas.
Zhibao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill): Treats stroke with sudden wind causing aphasia, Zhong E (sudden evil invasion) leading to Qi cessation, poisoning by various substances and hidden wind, heat pathogens, Yin-Yang dual toxins, mountain miasma toxins, Gu (poisonous worm) and water toxins, postpartum blood syncope, bleeding from mouth and nose, evil blood attacking the heart, irritability and asthma, vomiting and regurgitation, dystocia with fainting, and retained dead fetus. For all the above conditions, use one he (approx. 100ml) of urine from an uncircumcised boy, add three to five drops of fresh ginger juice, mix into the urine, warm it, and dissolve three to five pills orally. It yields miraculous results. It also treats accumulation of heat in the Heart and Lungs, retching due to latent heat, pathogenic factors attacking the Heart, wind-type constipation of the Large Intestine, mental restlessness, dizziness of the head and eyes, insomnia, dry lips and mouth, delirium due to Shanghan (Cold Damage), and all these conditions.

Grind the raw rhinoceros horn and hippopotamus tooth into fine powder, then mix evenly with the remaining drugs. Heat the styrax paste in a double boiler. Once solidified, mix with the other drugs to form a pill mass. Store in an airtight container. Roll into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Dissolve 3 to 5 pills in Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) and take orally. It also treats various pediatric epilepsy cases, acute fright-heat, sudden external shock, insomnia, irritability, and convulsions due to wind-phlegm. Children aged two years should take 2 pills, dissolved in Renshen Tang.

Grind the six ingredients through silk gauze. Soak Dansha, Cihuang, and Xionghuang in vinegar. Soak Zengqing in good wine in a copper vessel, seal with paper, and expose to sunlight for 100 days (or 5 days if urgent, warming with fire if no sun). Grind each into fine powder, mix with vinegar to appropriate moisture, place in earthen furnace, seal with Liuyi Mud (Six-One Mud) to prevent gas leakage. Install iron ring stand 1.5 chi high, place furnace on top. Ignite gradually using soft or hard charcoal. Initially use熟炭 (cooked charcoal) sticks 4 cun long. When 1/3 remains, replenish. Repeat three times using熟火 (cooked fire). Then use益生炭 (fresh charcoal), increasing fire intensity. After one shichen (2 hours), fill base with charcoal. Stop after two cycles. Cool completely before retrieving.
Medicine essence flies up and condenses on the furnace lid. Five colors = best, three colors = secondary, one color = inferior. Bright white like snow is best. Sweep remaining residue with rooster wing, mix with jujube paste, form millet-sized pills. Best for Pian Feng (hemiplegia), Da Feng (leprosy/severe wind), malignant diseases, epilepsy, boils, ghost attacks. Take one pill on empty stomach at dawn, size of millet seed. For chronic malaria unresponsive to other treatments, with abdominal distension, upper Qi rebellion, swelling of face/body/legs approaching death, take one pill; vomiting brings cure (some cure without vomiting). If no vomit and no cure, take 1.5 pills. If still no cure, increase by 0.5 pill next day. Cure expected, Qi stabilizes, expect expulsion of green/yellow/white matter. Pleural masses from malaria will resolve. If no abdominal distension, take one pill daily, increasing until effect; vomiting not mandatory. One pill may suffice; do not combine doses. Can take every three days. Adjust wisely. Water discharge from abdomen is normal. If patient spirit improves, adjust dosage; can combine two pills into one dose taken at afternoon meal. Keep temperature neutral. Eat freely. For malaria with night sweats/weakness, take one pill daily; vomiting stops after three days. For malaria with no sweat, blocked Qi, cold feet, take one pill; if no sweat after three days, feet warm, moist sweat appears, vomiting stops after three days. For pale complexion, color returns after three days. Some require vomiting, some cure with small dose, some strong patients need 3-4 pills for effect. Individual constitution varies; start with millet size, increase until effect. Do not overdose. Avoid oil, noodles, fish, meat, garlic. Take cleanly. For chronic bedridden/emaciated/distended/swollen/dysenteric patients, mortality is high; treatment saves 3-4 out of 10. For Zheng Jia (masses), take one Dao Gui (unit of measure), swallow with grain water.
For sudden death, Zhong E, Ke Wu, Huoluan with abdominal fullness, Five Shi Zhu, evil wind, contagious disease, death of family, mania, already dead but heart warm: prop head, open mouth (do not remove teeth), give with grain water; revival occurs upon ingestion. For chronic illness, take one Dao Gui daily, induce sweating; cure follows. If no cure, repeat once. Some cure without sweat. If no sweat/no cure, add half Dao Gui as above. Carry nine Dao Gui powder in crimson bag; men left, women right; tie to children's heads to ward off miasma. For children, mix with vinegar, apply square-inch paper to chest/abdomen. For recently deceased: winter 2 days, summer 1 day; revive upon ingestion. Adding Jinya/Cishi causes vomiting/diarrhea within 5 doses, then stabilizes. Start pill size as soybean, decrease gradually, never larger. Severe wind/epilepsy: up to 20 doses. Hemiplegia/boils/malignant wind/epilepsy: up to 20 doses. Other malignant diseases: 1-2 doses max, based on strength. To detoxify, eat stewed fatty pork. Mild headache/fever may occur initially; loss of taste for 1-2 days resolves; taste returns after 5 days. Control diet. If闷乱 (restless/confused) after dosing, drink Ephedra Decoction. One Dao Gui equals 6 millet grains or 3 small beans.
Method for Earthen Furnace:
Use two earthen pots, capacity approx. 2 da dou. Coat interior with sweet earth until dry. Alternatively, use one earthen pot and one熟铁 (wrought iron) pot, capacity 9 sheng each. Earthen pot on top, iron on bottom. Size depends on medicine quantity.
Method for Liuyi Mud (Six-One Mud):
Chishizhi (Red Kaolin), Mulì (Oyster Shell), Huashi (Talcum), Fanshi (Alumen), Huangfan (Yellow Alumen), Lutu (Halophilic Soil), Qiuyinshi (Earthworm Excrement, each 2 liang).
Add sufficient Cu (vinegar). If no Lutu, use salt. Make sweet earth paste, wrap each of the five minerals (excluding earthworm excrement and halophilic soil) separately in paste to prevent gas leakage. Fire for 3 days (1 day acceptable). Break clumps, grind, sieve through silk. Mix with earthworm excrement and halophilic soil equally. Bind with vinegar to thick porridge consistency. Use 2 parts vinegar to 1 part water. Coat earthen pots with this mud. Zengqing should resemble earthworm excrement; Cihuang should resemble Coptis. If unavailable, Kunlun Lu (green mineral) is acceptable. Dansha should be fresh; Susha (grain cinnabar) is acceptable. Magnetite and Jinya were not used previously but are added now. Treats myriad wind evils, highly effective. For chronic incurable diseases, prepare this batch on auspicious sunny days, fasting and bathing.
Commentary: Ancient immortals used this to save people; it was highly secret. During Daye era, I often compounded it but struggled to find Xionghuang and Zengqing. Later in Shu, Xionghuang was cheap, and I acquired much Zengqing at Feiwu Xuanwu, which locals did not recognize. Recognize it by its resemblance to earthworm excrement regardless of size. Worth a thousand gold.
I compounded a batch in Shu County at the Wei family home; it cured diseases miraculously. Chronic wind-phlegm cured after 100 days of use. Hence recorded. Always fry Xionghuang in oil for 9 days/nights before using in pills; raw use is toxic. The pill has intense heat toxicity; use with caution. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
