[From *Bao*] To treat blood stasis (accumulation of blood stasis) causing stabbing pain in the abdomen and lower back. Use three taels of Sijun Tang (Four Substances Decoction) finely powdered, add two taels of Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome) finely powdered after wine decoction. Take three qian each time, administered with wine.
[From *Yun*] Zijin Wan (Purple Gold Pill) treats postpartum aversion to cold and discomfort, lower back pain, stabbing sensation in the lower abdomen, alternating chills and fever with abdominal pain, long-standing blood stasis, and irregular menstruation. It can also treat heart pain, with effects similar to Shixiao San (Pain-Stopping Powder).
Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung) (stir-fried and powdered) Zhen Puhuang (Lygodii Spora) (equal parts)
Mix Wulingzhi powder with good rice vinegar, slowly boil over low heat into a paste. Then mix in Puhuang powder to form pills the size of cherries. Take one or two pills each time, decocted in half a cup of water and half a cup of child's urine until reduced to seventy percent. Take warm when the pill dissolves. Shortly after, take another dose; lochia will then discharge. For cases with blood stasis forming clumps or irregular menstruation, grind the pill with wine and take orally.
Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction) treats postpartum lower back pain, incomplete expulsion of residual blood in the abdomen leading to foot swelling, and anorexia.
Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice) (one sheng) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each two taels) Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (four taels) Sheng Mi (Raw Honey) (one he) Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) (half a he)
Chop the herbs, decoct in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng of liquid. Strain, then add Di Huang juice, honey, and ginger juice. Simmer over low heat for one or two boils. Take three he per dose, twice during the day and three times at night. Upon having one or two bowel movements, the condition resolves.
[From *Da Yi*] When postpartum lochia initially flows smoothly but suddenly decreases gradually and stops completely, accompanied by heavy pain in the waist, this is due to blood stagnation; Tao Ren Tang (Persicae Semen Decoction) is indicated. If there is a site of severe pain that inevitably develops into a carbuncle or ulcer, it should be treated according to the methods for carbuncles and ulcers.
Formula for Tao Ren Tang:
Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) Su Mu (Sappan Wood) Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix) (each half liang) Meng Chong (Blatta Orientalis) (remove feet and wings, stir-fried) Shui Zhi (Hirudo)
Grind into coarse powder. Take three qian each time, decoct in one cup of water until reduced to sixty percent. Strain and take warm at any time. Stop taking the medicine once lochia discharges.
Moxibustion and Acupuncture: For spinal pain and stiffness (Ji Tong Ji Qiang), there are three methods:
The first targets the Du Mai (Governor Vessel). The classics state: The collateral branch of the Du Mai is named Changqiang (GV1), diverging to run to the Taiyang channel. In excess conditions manifesting as spinal stiffness, treat its divergent point.
The second targets the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel. The classics say: When Jue qi (rebellious qi) causes pain along the spine, extending to the neck and head with a heavy sensation, eyes appearing dim, and stiff waist and spine, bleed the blood collaterals of the Foot-Taiyang channel.
The third targets the Small Intestine Channel. The classics state: Lower abdominal distension radiating to the testicles, rushing up to the waist, spine, and heart indicates pathogenic factors in the Small Intestine. Treat Huangyuan (conception vessel origin) to dissipate them; puncture the Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Channel to subdue them; and treat Xialian (ST39) to eliminate them.
[From *Yu*] Spinal and lumbar pain: Renzhong (GV26) (at the depression below the philtrum, needle insert 3 fen, slightly upward, only reduce method, no tonification, retain needles for three inhalations) Weizhong (BL40) (depth 2.5 cun, contraindicated for moxibustion; additionally, do not bleed purple vessels on the four sides if they resemble vine knots; bleeding may cause uncontrolled hemorrhage leading to premature death) Sanli (ST36) (reduce method) Wushu (GB27)
[From *Jia Yi Jing*] Stiffness of the waist and spine preventing flexion and extension: Stimulate Jizhong (GV12). Pain on the inner aspect of the testicles and spine, difficult urination, impotence, urgency in the lower abdomen radiating to the yin and the inner aspect of the leg: Yin Gu (KI10) governs these. For men with acute spinal tension and red eyes: Zhigou (SJ6) governs these. Stiffness of the waist and spine, flaccidity of the four limbs, irritability, cough, shortness of breath, oppressive inability to breathe, reversal of qi, inability to raise shoulders, flaccidity of yang, emaciation: Zhangmen (LR13) governs these.
Those with high-set ears have high-set kidneys; those with high-set kidneys suffer from dorsal and spinal pain, unable to flex or extend. (Full text see Diagnosis section.)
A Kidney pulse that is extremely slow/weak manifests as "broken spine" (severe spinal pain). (Full text see Treatment of Excess and Deficiency section.)
